Bought this as a present for my oldest daughter. She is a huge fan of the series but hasn't been able to read all of them. She was so happy to add this to her collection.

Ron Roy Scores Another Hit!
By Winemaiden
My 9 year old daughter started reading these books about a year ago, and has now read every book in the series! She delights in every detail, from physical descriptions of the suspects to the personalities of the recurring charaters, and relates easily to the three kids who are the detectives. She can hardly wait for the next title to be released. This book, like the others, has a plot that is believable to its audience, encourages problem solving and critical thinking, and provides a trio of heroes that your own kids would like as friends. In this volume, the reader is exposed to a museum and information about mummies, as well as given a mystery to solve. Another delight for the 6 to 9 year old set.

Be wary of blanket assertions about the availability of aid!
By David R. Moran
Widely quoted on the Web is the assertion from this book that "...almost every family now qualifies for some form of assistance. Many parents don't believe that a family that makes $75,000+ a year, owns its home, and holds substantial assets could receive financial aid. These days, that family--provided it is presented in the right light--almost certainly does."
Financial advice columnist Kenneth Hooker recently wrote the same thing:
"You can take some comfort in the fact that buying a college education has become a good deal like buying a new car -- virtually nobody pays the sticker price. There are a wide variety of financial aid programs available, both through the government and through the schools themselves, and the real costs are likely to be dramatically lower than the figures supplied ...."
As the completely middle-class, full-tuition-paying parent of a child at an Ivy League college, I feel like a total chump when I read this stuff.
Well, maybe I have missed something in all of my researches and walk-throughs with family contribution calculators, but I'm not sure.
Since there has been such a marked reduction, even disappearance of merit scholarships, and almost everything now is needs-based, parents should know that if your child applies to a private school that includes home equity in its EFC (as many now do, maybe most), and
(a) if your debt (mortgage and home loans) is not huge, and/or
(b) if you make a decent salary, and/or
(c) if you have saved and invested over the years and now have a moderate portfolio (however much it's down from 1-2 years ago),
then you almost certainly are NOT going to qualify for any financial aid whatsoever from any number of competitive private schools. Loans, sure. Aid, most likely no.
So far as I can determine, you are expected to take out a home-equity loan (if your house debt is low enough) and pay the full fare. And/or sell some of those "substantial assets."
I am not saying this is wrong, or even unfair for those of us who are comfortably middle-class. But unless I have made some major omissions, similar parents should not be misled by the broad promises and assertions by these college-financing "experts."

Absolutely worthless for independent students.
By ripovitan d!
This book should be entitled "Paying For Your Child's College Without Going Broke". It contains almost no information for one who is trying to pay their own way through college. In fact the information in this book is so insular, I'm led to believe that unless you're a clone copy of the author, you won't find any relevant information in this book whatsoever. This is a throwaway piece of tripe intended to capitalize on peoples' apprehension of college costs. There is nothing here you won't find elsewhere on the net.

Great for PARENTS; Not Good for ADULT STUDENTS
By A Customer
This book is written for parents who are about to send their child to college. It's not written for adult students, per se, although it states(on one or two lines)that the principles are about the same. However, I don't believe most adult students have their own businesses, own houses and/or property, and can itemize deductions on their income taxes, to lower the AGI(Adjusted Gross Income), as the book describes. The book is good for parents who plan to send their kids to school, but for adult students, it gets very confusing. It's very vague as to whether the same principles that apply to parents, apply to adult students.

Reading Chekhov: A Critical Journey, by Janet Malcolm

To illuminate the mysterious greatness of Anton Chekhov’s writings, Janet Malcolm takes on three roles: literary critic, biographer, and journalist. Her close readings of the stories and plays are interwoven with episodes from Chekhov’s life and framed by an account of Malcolm’s journey to St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Yalta. She writes of Chekhov’s childhood, his relationships, his travels, his early success, and his self-imposed “exile”—always with an eye to connecting them to themes and characters in his work. Lovers of Chekhov as well as those new to his work will be transfixed by Reading Chekhov.

From Publishers Weekly
Longtime New Yorker magazine writer Malcolm (The Crime of Sheila McGough; The Silent Woman; etc.) is known for her fearlessly opinionated takes on controversial subjects, from psychoanalysis to murder cases. This short meditation in 13 untitled chapters is a reflection on her reading of a favorite author, famed 19th-century playwright and short story writer Anton Chekhov, in the context of a recent tourist trip she took through contemporary Russia. Malcolm's considerable investigative reporting skills reveal the expected squalor and fallout from the Soviet years, though she admits that she knows no Russian and relied on tour guides as translators (whom she describes mercilessly down to their bodily flaws). However, although Malcolm admits that she necessarily reads Chekhov in English, she does not inquire how much her own perception of the author results from depending (according to the slim bibliography at the end of the book ) on the Edwardian fallibility of translator Constance Garnett. She agrees with all biographers that Chekhov was an admirably humane man, writing prolifically to earn a living because he charged his peasant patients nothing for medical care. The anecdotes may be the more compelling stuff here, however, as when Malcolm squabbles with a curator of a Moscow Chekhov Museum, who does not wish to inform the inquiring American journalist how she manages to earn a living. Readers eager for a taste of the dismal tourist experience Russia offers these days trains, to no surprise, are decorated with "cheap and ugly relics of the Soviet period" and the food served on them is "gray and inedible" will snap up these concise, somewhat bitter musings. Fans of Russian lit may squabble with some of the heavier moralizing, but will appreciate this real example of a fan's notes. And Malcolm's many regular readers are a lock.

From Library Journal
Recent biographies of Anton Chekhov, like Donald Rayfield's Anton Chekhov: A Life (LJ 2/1/98), have enhanced our understanding of this Russian genius. Now Malcolm (The Journalist and the Murderer), who has written extensively about psychoanalysis and other subjects, brings her considerable talents to Chekhov studies in a work that is a combination of biography, travel book, and literary criticism. Malcolm traveled to Russia, visiting the places Chekhov lived and his characters inhabited. In each chapter, she deftly takes us back to Chekhov's day. But she also relates her conversations with contemporary Russians, and her accounts of her Russian tour guides give the narrative a personal and sometimes humorous tone. She molds these individual episodes into a cohesive whole, bringing the reader wholly into Chekhov's life. It is not necessary to know Chekhov's writings to enjoy this splendid book, but it will serve to prod the reader to Chekhov's works and the treasures that await. Recommended for all libraries.
- Ron Ratliff, Kansas State Univ., Manhattan

From The New Yorker
The author's pilgrimage to Chekhov's Russia—Moscow, St. Petersburg, the gardens of his villa in Yalta—is a reunion with this most reticent of literary fathers. Malcolm analyzes the transformations that Chekhov grants his redeemable roués and guileless heroines, and illuminates the hidden surreality and waywardness of his realism.

Short and sweet, but full of good things
By David Light
Few readers have time to wrestle with the long biographies and academic treatises that proliferate on beloved writers. Lack of time trumps the best intentions. Janet Malcolm has saved Chekhov enthusiasts the trouble by doing the reading herself, adding her own insights, and throwing in a bit of travel writing as well.

Literary criticism predominates in this 200-page book, with biography taking second place and travelogue third. Malcolm weaves the biographical details around comments about the stories and plays; so, for example, we learn that Chekhov was steeped in Russian Orthodoxy--more so, apparently, than even Tolstoy. What makes that especially interesting is the contrast between Chekhov's self-proclaimed nonbelief and the way he handles religious themes in the stories; there is some evidence, presented in this book, that these matters were not as settled in Chekhov's mind as one might think just based on his statements. (I, for one, have always been impressed with the sympathy Chekhov shows to the characters who appear in The Bishop, a story not discussed by Malcolm.)

Malcolm also takes on in brief compass Chekhov's trip to Sakhalin (arduous to get there; led to a rather dull, non-Chekhovian book); his death at 44 from tuberculosis in a hotel in Germany (which had various eyewitnesses and led to a variety of embellished accounts); and his relationships with women (he liked them pretty and well-dressed), with his publisher, with Tolstoy, and with his parents and siblings.

She spices it up with thought-provoking insights; one example: "In his stories and plays, Chekhov is afraid for all men. He was only in his twenties and thirties when he wrote most of them, but like other geniuses--especially those who die prematurely--he wrote as if he were old. Toward the end of Ward No. 6, he veers off--as he does in other dark and terrible works, such as Peasants and In the Ravine--to rejoice for all men in the beauty of the world."

As for her travels, Malcolm visits St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Yalta, each city in the company of a different tour guide. Her observations, far from being unfairly critical, are subtle, sardonic, and on the mark--certainly anyone who has traveled to Russia will recognize her guides.

As I wrote this, I changed the rating from four to five stars--I can't really think what would improve it. An index perhaps, since despite its brevity one would like to be able to search the contents more easily. And I would disagree with the book's jacket, which claims that those unfamiliar with Chekhov could enjoy this volume. At the very least, one should have read a volume of the major stories and be familiar with the plays. Among other works, she discusses The Lady with the Lapdog, The Steppe, The Kiss, The Schoolmistress, The Three Sisters, Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orhard, and more.

Confound it, however, you're never off the hook--the book whets your appetite for more, naturally! Those longer biographies and critical treatments beckon...and all the stories, perhaps in a different translation this time...been a while since I looked at the plays...well, good intentions count for something, right?

Reading Malcolm reading Chekhov
By lowell duluth
For any lover of Chekhov this wonderful breeze of a book is a must.
It was all the more poignant for me having, a few years ago, visited the places in the Crimea mentioned here, including Chekhov`s villa. Janet Malcolm interweaves her own journeys in Russia and Ukraine with pertinent scenes from the master`s stories and (occasionally) plays, in a way which sends one diving back to the sources once again. In the subtlest, most modest of ways, this author heightens one`s respect for Chekhov and his art, and made this reader fall in love once again with Chekhov the writer and Chekhov the man.

A Seminar
By Roger Lathbury
Sometimes I think that if Janet Malcolm decided to write a meditation about the way lint accumulates under beds, it would be an interesting book. Everything she puts her hand to becomes larger and more significant, increases in periphery, and connects to matters one would never have thought of oneself.

And so with her book on Chekhov, a writer whose transfigurations of the ordinary, whose appreciation of the extraordinary, and whose reticence in his art and his life constitute a beauty and decency that transforms. In _Reading Chekhov_ crucial data from half a dozen biographies are distilled and linked to selected precis of critical articles and by contrast to Malcolm's own observations of Russia, which she visited, one gathers, largely in homage to Chekhov himself. The pace of her treatment is just right; each subject--Chekhov's death, Olga's role in his life, the trip to Sakhalin, the relationship to Suvorin--is given brisk yet full-feeling treatment and placed in the arc of the book, which moves slowly toward the center of Chekhov's personality, which apparently Chekhov took care would be ultimately unknowable.

The story that begins and ends Malcolm's visit is the famous "Lady with a Lapdog"--a work alternately analyzed by "Aaron Green" in Malcolm's earlier _Psychoanalysis: the Impossible Profession._ The profundity, elegance, revelatory possibilities, and double-sidedness of the approach in that previous book and of that short story serve the presentation of Chekhov well. He emerges as the most delicate of perceivers, a man hesitant to say one jot more than he believes, as a twentieth century writer (as opposed to his hero Tolstoy), as a passionate moralist who understands how dubious it is to be a passionate moralist, as a devotee of loveliness and talent who respects honest, even dull and repetitious work.

The sense of the word "Chekhovian"--that mute combination of goodness and passivity--resonates throughout, with the singular difference that Malcolm conveys on every page: that Chekhov was a literary genius. After reading her fresh, reinforcing, and deeper-seeking illuminations, I pulled down my eight collections, wanting to reread everything all at once, "The Kiss," "The Steppe," "A Dreary Story," "A Duel," "Ionivitch," "In the Ravine," "Three Years," "Ward No. 6," "Little Apples," "Ariadne," the plays. (I don't have "Kashtanka," but that's what libraries are for.)

Another book by Janet Malcolm is coming out in September 2007--_Two Lives._ Just as _Psychoanalysis_ was like analysis itself, _Reading Chekhov_ is a seminar taught by a teacher in love with her subject. And look at how many stories and plays (the list above is not complete) and how much of Chekhov's life Malcolm presents in under 210 pages!

Flap Your Wings
By Anne B. Roberts
I am thrilled to find this book back in print. Our family received a paperback edition many years ago as a gift. We have read it literally to pieces. Since receiving this gift, we have added three children to our family through international adoption. Like the bird family, we don't look alike, but we share the same nest. My husband and I live by Mr. Bird's philosophy, "If an egg is in your nest, you sit on it and keep it warm." Our answer to nosy questions concerning one of our children - "He's in our nest, so he must be ours."
We are now entering a new phase of parenting. The first of our 6 children is moving out to begin life on her own. Once again Mr. Bird in his wisdom has given us direction: "It's getting too crowded up here. Junior has to leave the nest. It is time for him to fly away...We must show him how to fly." Of course our pride matches Mr. Bird as we watch her go, "(S)he's happy now! Just watch (her) swim" or fly or soar.
Flap Your Wings is a classic. It celebrates love, family, differences, attachment, and letting go. Thank you P.D. Eastman for your fabulous book. I will read it for years to come.

For Graduates: Parents and Children Alike
By A Customer
While this is obviously a children's book, don't lose sight of the metaphor! Like Mr. and Mrs. Bird, we usually are surprised by this "creature" in our nest, but what the heck, we do our best to feed and nurture them. And when they get too big for the nest, physically, psychologically and emotionally, we do need to push them out and tell them to flap their wings. And guess what? They become exactly who they are supposed to be, despite our attempts to make them who we THINK they should be. This is one of my favorite graduation books, mostly for my friends who are pushing their children out of the nest.

Funny primer
By A Customer
I was excited to see this book being printed again. Eastman ( Go Dog Go ) had me laughing out loud the first time I read this to my kids. A bird couple comes home to find an enormous egg ( an alligator egg) in their nest. The trials and tribulations of hatching and raising the " baby bird" are lessons in parenting and work ethics, funny as they are. The couple trying to teach their "baby bird " to fly brings the book to a hilarious climax.

essential for research
By J. Niehaus
Although this edition of Paine's works dates from 1993 it is worth buying simply for the introduction by Gordon Wood. The paperback version is an inexpensive way to have most of Paine's important writings at hand, including the letters on interesting subjects that are not always found in other collections.

Who said studying can't be fun?
By A Customer
The reason I bought this book is really for my husband. He was "distracted" in high school. We've been doing very good without his H.S. diploma but I wanted him to at least take the GED. I picked this one, first, beacause of it's title. It wasn't so "formal" like the other ones. This actually sounded pretty "casual." Secondly, because of the Princeton GED tests they have in the back. That really helped us a lot (I'm his "tutor":)). Lastly, and the best reason to buy this book is that it's funny. What I mean by that is that they don't try to bore the life out of you. They teach you really helpful things but they word it in ways that the subject keeps your attention. My husband was never the "school" type but amazingly he reads Craking the GED voluntarily and he TESTS himself!!!I even catch him smiling to himself while studying sometimes! In conclusion, if you want to get the GED over with but don't want to hire someone to hold your eyes open...Buy the book. It's GREAT! It's PERFECT for teenagers also.

Great study aid!
By A Customer
I really liked this book. The writers wrote in a way that was interesting and easy to understand. They were able to catch and keep my attention which was surpising, but I also agreed with the other reviewer when he/she said that there should have been more detailed explanations. For example, in the math section there are a lot helpful practice problems which I liked, except when I turned to the back of the book to check my answers and I got one or two incorrect, it told me the right answer, but didn't really explain why that was the right answer. So, since I had no idea how they got that answer I had no idea how to fix the mistake I made doing the problem. Still, besides that one drawback, in my opinion the book was great. It was very thorough, comprehendable and written in a laid back manner. I passed the GED simply from studying this book alone. I reccomend this book to anyone reading this review.

Before I applied to do my GED I came to this site and read about all the study guides available . This book definately got the best reviews .I went to the libarary and found only the Arco test books which were ok but when I bought this book it just made everything easier and less complicated. It explained things in great detail and best of all it told you the things that are most likely to come up in the test. When I went to do my exams I found the book very acurate in its predictions. I am glad to say that I passed with pretty good scores .So to all those who come after me good luck and get the book it is definately worth it.

A great book and a great idea.
By Steve Charney
Thank you Will and Mary Pope Osborne. My 8-year old daughter has always been a fan of the Magic Tree House books and we have always appreciated the educational value of the books. It always was apparent that you had researched the background and facts about the various situations Jack and Annie found themselves in. Sharing the research with your ardent and eager readers is a gift. My daughter devoured the Dinosaurs Research Guide with enjoyment and enthusiasm. She is moved to share her new knowledge with us all. Reading the book has inspired her to continue researching on her own. And, she also says she is looking forward to reading more Research Guides. I highly reccommend this book and any that encourages children to seek and learn on their own.

An excellent book.
By A Customer
I loved the book Dinosaurs because it tells me so much about dinosaurs and it is interesting at the same time. It was fun to read. It was written as if by Jack and Annie and I really liked the part where Annie pretended to be a "silly-sourus". I look forward to reading more Mary Pope Osborne Research Guides.

The essential thoughts of Pope John Paul II on matters of belief and conscience have been culled from his encyclicals, speeches, homilies, and statements to fellow bishops and collected in one volume.

Throughout his more than two decades as the leader of the world’s Catholics, John Paul II has spoken both officially and informally on all aspects of life in the modern world.

Whether defining the Church's teachings or passionately espousing the basic human rights of all people, whether speaking from his throne in the Vatican or from a platform set up on a soccer field, the Pope has always eloquently and clearly stated his thinking, vision, and hopes for the Church and the world.

For this new edition, the compilers have added significant new material, including the pontiff's thoughts as we enter the third millennium of Christianity.

An insightful and inspiring gem
By orbit13
Nick Bakalar and Richard Balkin have scoured numerous encyclicals, speeches, and letters to assemble this wonderful treasury of Pope John Paul II's thoughts on many questions facing today's society. The result is a wealth of wisdom and insight from the most seen man in the world. This isn't a book of answers to life's vital questions; rather, it offers the Pope's and the Church's view on such issues and asks us to question our attitudes and feelings. The topics are far-ranging, both contemporary and timeless. Matters of love, family, death, women, work, and youth are addressed as well as subjects such as human rights and progress and the modern world. Bakalar and Balkin's greatest strength in composing this book is the wide spectrum they've selected from. These issues are universal, and you will find something that speaks to you. You'll probably discover much more.
"The Wisdom of John Paul II" is not only a great addition to your inspirational or religious library; it's also a great addition to any library. I suggest giving this book as a gift, especially if you're looking for something meaningful that can be read over and over (instead of being used as a dust-collector). Non-Catholics and even non-religious will find the Pope's words inspiring, and his message of universal love can be understood and appreciated by all. He does not viciously attack groups in conflict with Church teachings but graciously approaches controversy as does a leader of the faith. Wherever he acts as an apologetic, he does so with the patience and firmness that has guided the Church through more than two decades.
This book, in part, acts as an intimate autobiography as it his diary of his times and how he has confronted the Church and society he has been entrusted. What makes this papal journal stand out from the rest though is that it is more than a portrait of the Pope or a collection of his quotes. His words represent one man's thoughts, but it also gives us a strong picture of his vision for the Catholic Church of the new millennium. Every issue is one that immediately concerns contemporary society, and that makes this book such an enjoyable and necessary read.

Words of Wisdom
By Brad Shorr
Inspirational comments (taken from his speeches and writings) from Pope John Paul II on subjects including suffering, women, work, peace, faith, prayer, and much more. Whatever the subject, John Paul's words convey a deep respect and love for all people and an intense desire for peace. The excerpts range from a few sentences to a couple paragraphs, but almost every one contains at least one idea worth serious reflection. Considering how much John Paul has experienced of the world and his super-wide ranging travels, his views are definitely not "ivory tower", and that really comes across in his common sense and practical attitude. Any reader, regardless of religious background, could learn something from this book.

Experience The Wisdom
By James Gallen
"The Wisdom of John Paul II" is a collection of sayings of His Holiness. Topically organized into seventeen sections, it distills true gems from his voluminous writings and public addresses.

From these distilled gems the reader can glean some of the themes of John Paul's teachings. One such theme is mystery. Whereas modern man always seeks to know and understand, John Paul finds mystery in man, mystery in God, mystery in man's relationship to God.

Another theme of John Paul II is that Christ is at the center of all human existence. Whatever the issue, John Paul finds the answer in Christ. Relations between people must be based on man's inherent, God-given dignity. Man's ultimate destiny is found in uniting himself to Christ.

Ultimately, the value of this book comes, not from the answers it provides, but the questions it gently leads us to ask. Who am I? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going? When a person starts asking these questions, he begins to think differently, to act differently, to be different. Pick up and read, think, and pray.

Good, but not perfect .....
By L. Mountford
I'm a "non-traditional" undergrad (trans.: "older than dirt"), a music major, who is in the process of getting ready for grad school. My math background is pretty limited: I haven't studied algebra or geometry since high school (about 40 yrs ago - 1965-66), and I had some minimal statistics and probability in a "math for non-science/math majors" course a couple of years ago. So it was with some trepidation that I started preparing for the GRE general test. Oh, I figured I'd do OK on the verbal -- living this long, you get reasonably familiar with vocabulary. But thinking about the quantitative portion threw me into a real panic.

I decided I needed help -- and ordered this book based on the description (and price). Note that this is the edition WITHOUT the companion CD. You do have access to the Princeton Review website and the online tools there, and you'll be wise to take advantage of them.

I used this book and the online tools in conjunction with the ETS PowerPrep software. Due to my school schedule, projects, finals, etc., I didn't start studying in earnest until about 4 days before the test. Probably not the smartest move on my part, but it was the best I could do. Before I started studying, I took a practice test just to see how I'd do -- ugh! not very good at all (550 verbal, 450 quantitative). So I spent about 2/3 of my time familiarizing myself with the tricks and tips for the math section offered by this book, and 1/3 of my time on the verbal and analytical writing sections.

The result: a very respectable 630 verbal score, and an astounding 730 quantitative score. The "tricks" offered by this book made all the difference in the math results.

It's not perfect -- you really do need to use the ETS preparation software, especially for the analytical writing part. Also, the ETS practice tests seem to be just a little closer in difficulty to the "real" test, but the PR tests aren't bad at all in that respect. I'm giving it 4 stars only because I rarely give 5-star ratings for things like this.

Some people have complained about the PR level of difficulty, their approach, etc. All I can say is that it definitely helped me nail the math section, and I consider it money well spent. Your mileage may vary.

Helpful in boosting confidence... but a little too "right-brained"
By J. Wang
I took the GRE CAT exam several weeks ago and had purchased this book with the CD-rom and also Barron's GRE book. I highly recommend that you do not rely on just one book alone when studying.

I started studying from the Barron's book first but found the practice questions to be incredibly difficult (I am not a naturally good standardized test taker). I settled on Princeton Review's (PR) guide as a backup. As I worked through the PR explanations and practice questions, I found both the Verbal and Math portions to be much easier in comparison to Barrons. I initially appreciated the "right-brain" approach to the GRE: taking advantage of process of elimination, viewing questions holistically, and making educated guesses- which gave me the confidence to take on the problems even if I did not know how to calculate an answer precisely.

Although PR's book gave me the confidence going into the exam, the exam itself was somewhat different and indeed, did require at times precise calculations for the math portion. That is where Barrons came in handy. In addition, the verbal portion on the actual CAT was harder than any of the practice questions PR provided (I did not have a chance to use the actual CD; I am referring to the practice questions in the book). The vocabulary list was also somewhat insufficient for the exam. In order to do well, you MUST know as many vocabulary words as possible. I recommend reviewing Barron's 3,000 word hit list and PR's Word Smart to beef up your vocabulary if needed.

Overall, CRACKING THE GRE isn't terrible, but it's not the best. If vocabulary is your achilles heel, check out University of California's free tutorial and vocab site called Number 2 (search for it online). I wish I had discovered this site much earlier than a few days before taking the exam. You should not dread the GRE, as CRACKING THE GRE emphasizes, but as a three hour game solving vocabulary and math questions. As silly as that sounds, being able to breathe deeply and be confident can really help you do well on the exam. Good luck.

Practice material did not correspond with actual GRE
By J. Prince
I had taken the GRE in 1999 on paper. When I was preparing to re-take the GRE, I bought this book to understand the changes in the test and to practice on the computer. My practice scores were excellent (far exceeding my performance in 1999), so I went into the actual test expecting to do well. However, my verbal score was 80 points below what it was in 1999, and 120 points below my average practice test from the CD-ROM. While the information for the analytical section was helpful, the verbal reasoning practice sections and vocabulary are not challenging enough. You would do well to look elsewhere for verbal practice.
