“This is not a book you read just once, but a tale of terrible beauty to get lost in over and over.”—Newsweek

“By turns mischievous and openhearted, earthy and soaring . . . hair-raising, horrific, and thrilling.”—The New Yorker

In Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, Alexandra Fuller remembers her African childhood with visceral authenticity. Though it is a diary of an unruly life in an often inhospitable place, it is suffused with Fuller’s endearing ability to find laughter, even when there is little to celebrate. Fuller’s debut is unsentimental and unflinching but always captivating. In wry and sometimes hilarious prose, she stares down disaster and looks back with rage and love at the life of an extraordinary family in an extraordinary time.

From 1972 to 1990, Alexandra Fuller—known to friends and family as Bobo—grew up on several farms in southern and central Africa. Her father joined up on the side of the white government in the Rhodesian civil war, and was often away fighting against the powerful black guerilla factions. Her mother, in turn, flung herself at their African life and its rugged farm work with the same passion and maniacal energy she brought to everything else. Though she loved her children, she was no hand-holder and had little tolerance for neediness. She nurtured her daughters in other ways: She taught them, by example, to be resilient and self-sufficient, to have strong wills and strong opinions, and to embrace life wholeheartedly, despite and because of difficult circumstances. And she instilled in Bobo, particularly, a love of reading and of storytelling that proved to be her salvation.

A worthy heir to Isak Dinesen and Beryl Markham, Alexandra Fuller writes poignantly about a girl becoming a woman and a writer against a backdrop of unrest, not just in her country but in her home. But Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight is more than a survivor’s story. It is the story of one woman’s unbreakable bond with a continent and the people who inhabit it, a portrait lovingly realized and deeply felt.

Praise for Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight

“The Africa of this beautiful book is not easy to forget. Despite, or maybe even because of, the snakes, the leopards, the malaria and the sheer craziness of its human inhabitants, often violent but pulsing with life, it seems like a fine place to grow up, at least if you are as strong, passionate, sharp and gifted as Alexandra Fuller.”—Chicago Tribune

“Owning a great story doesn’t guarantee being able to tell it well. That’s the individual mystery of talent, a gift with which Alexandra Fuller is richly blessed, and with which she illuminates her extraordinary memoir. . . . There’s flavor, aroma, humor, patience . . . and pinpoint observational acuity.”—Entertainment Weekly

“This is a joyously telling memoir that evokes Mary Karr’s The Liars’ Club as much as it does Isak Dinesen’s Out of Africa.”—New York Daily News

“Riveting . . . [full of] humor and compassion.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

“The incredible story of an incredible childhood.”—The Providence Journal

From Publishers Weekly
A classic is born in this tender, intensely moving and even delightful journey through a white African girl's childhood. Born in England and now living in Wyoming, Fuller was conceived and bred on African soil during the Rhodesian civil war (1971-1979), a world where children over five "learn[ed] how to load an FN rifle magazine, strip and clean all the guns in the house, and ultimately, shoot-to-kill." With a unique and subtle sensitivity to racial issues, Fuller describes her parents' racism and the wartime relationships between blacks and whites through a child's watchful eyes. Curfews and war, mosquitoes, land mines, ambushes and "an abundance of leopards" are the stuff of this childhood. "Dad has to go out into the bush... and find terrorists and fight them"; Mum saves the family from an Egyptian spitting cobra; they both fight "to keep one country in Africa white-run." The "A" schools ("with the best teachers and facilities") are for white children; "B" schools serve "children who are neither black nor white"; and "C" schools are for black children. Fuller's world is marked by sudden, drastic changes: the farm is taken away for "land redistribution"; one term at school, five white students are "left in the boarding house... among two hundred African students"; three of her four siblings die in infancy; the family constantly sets up house in hostile, desolate environments as they move from Rhodesia to Zambia to Malawi and back to Zambia. But Fuller's remarkable affection for her parents (who are racists) and her homeland (brutal under white and black rule) shines through. This affection, in spite of its subjects' prominent flaws, reveals their humanity and allows the reader direct entry into her world. Fuller's book has the promise of being widely read and remaining of interest for years to come. Photos not seen by PW. (On-sale Dec. 18)Forecast: Like Anne Frank's diary, this work captures the tone of a very young person caught up in her own small world as she witnesses a far larger historical event. It will appeal to those looking for a good story as well as anyone seeking firsthand reportage of white southern Africa. The quirky title and jacket will propel curious shoppers to pick it up.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Pining for Africa, Fuller's parents departed England in the early '70s while she was still a toddler. They knew well that their life as white farmers living in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia at the time) would be anything but glamorous. Living a crude, rural life, the author and her older sister contended with "itchy bums and worms and bites up their arms from fleas" and losing three siblings. Mum and Dad were freewheeling, free-drinking, and often careless. Yet they were made of tough stuff and there is little doubt of the affection among family members. On top of attempting to make a living, they faced natives who were trying to free themselves of British rule, and who were understandably not thrilled to see more white bwanas settling in. Fuller portrays bigotry (her own included), segregation, and deprivation. But judging by her vivid and effortless imagery, it is clear that the rich, pungent flora and fauna of Africa have settled deeply in her bones. Snapshots scattered throughout the book enhance the feeling of intimacy and adventure. A photo of the author's first day of boarding school seems ordinary enough- she's standing in front of the family's Land Rover, smiling with her mother and sister. Then the realization strikes that young Alexandra is holding an Uzi (which she had been trained to use) and the family car had been mine-proofed. This was no ordinary childhood, and it makes a riveting story thanks to an extraordinary telling.

From Library Journal
It is difficult for most people even to imagine the world described in this book, let alone live in it as a child: the nights are dark, scary, and filled with strange noises; the people welcome you and despise you at the same time; there is a constant anxious feeling burning in your stomach, which, you later realize, is fear of the unrest surrounding you. The British-born Fuller grew up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), losing three siblings to disease as her father fought in the Rhodesian civil war and her mother managed the farm. She approaches her childhood with reserve, leaving many stories open to interpretation while also maintaining a remarkable clarity about what really transpired in her homeland, in her own home, and in her head. The narrative seems complicated, weaving together war, politics, racial issues, and alcoholism, but its emotional core remains honest, playful, and unapologetic; it hardly seems possible that this 32-year-old has so much to say and says it so well. In this powerful debut, Fuller fully succeeds in memorializing the beauty of each desert puddle and each African summer night sky while also recognizing that beauty can lie hidden in the faces of those who have crossed her path. Highly recommended.

Luminous

One reviewer here gave this book one star because he thought the protagonist and her family racist. He is mostly right. None of that need detract from the fact that this is a superb book with a transparency and sense of place rarely seen.

you may not always agree with what you read in it but that does not make it any less worth reading. Speaking as a mixed race man who has lived in many places in Africa, I found this to be honest and well-observed. The fact that the author does not attempt to re-write her family history to appear politically correct speaks for her honesty.

Go read this magnificent book.

Nicely done. . . .
By Maurice Williams
A well delivered account of a British family that settles in colonized Rhodesia. The author's account of her family's experience is well written, humorous at time and painful at others. My initial resistance to the memoir was based on early impressions that this is yet another depiction of European oppression of native Africans during colonization. However, as the book progresses life in war torn Rhodesia (and other countries) as revealed from the perspective of farming class colonizers proves to be more interesting than expected. Fuller aptly captures the atmosphere of the African countryside - its sounds, smells and beauty. It's always difficult to read of the disdain, disrespect and assumed superiority of one race over another but the author's life account demonstrates that a shift in racist notions is possible. The book came to me by way of a friend who thought the book would be too "deep". I didn't find that to be the case. I doubt that I would have picked this up on my own but I'm glad to have been exposed to the author's coming of age in the Motherland.

Interesting autobiographical tale, nicely read!
By Suzanne Bennett
I ordered this audiobook because I like the reader, Lisette LeCat. She does a wonderful job reading the No.1 Ladies' Detective novels, and I wanted to get more of her work to listen to. She does a lovely job with this novel as well. The story line of the novel is a bit harsh as compared with the Ladies' Detective novels, but this is a true story and that's life! :D

In an Uncertain World: Tough Choices from Wall Street to Washington, by Robert Rubin, Jacob Weisberg

Robert Rubin was sworn in as the seventieth U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in January 1995 in a brisk ceremony attended only by his wife and a few colleagues. As soon as the ceremony was over, he began an emergency meeting with President Bill Clinton on the financial crisis in Mexico. This was not only a harbinger of things to come during what would prove to be a rocky period in the global economy; it also captured the essence of Rubin himself--short on formality, quick to get into the nitty-gritty.

From his early years in the storied arbitrage department at Goldman Sachs to his current position as chairman of the executive committee of Citigroup, Robert Rubin has been a major figure at the center of the American financial system. He was a key player in the longest economic expansion in U.S. history. With In an Uncertain World, Rubin offers a shrewd, keen analysis of some of the most important events in recent American history and presents a clear, consistent approach to thinking about markets and dealing with the new risks of the global economy.

Rubin's fundamental philosophy is that nothing is provably certain. Probabilistic thinking has guided his career in both business and government. We see that discipline at work in meetings with President Clinton and Hillary Clinton, Chinese premier Zhu Rongji, Alan Greenspan, Lawrence Summers, Newt Gingrich, Sanford Weill, and the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan. We see Rubin apply it time and again while facing financial crises in Asia, Russia, and Brazil; the federal government shutdown; the rise and fall of the stock market; the challenges of the post-September 11 world; the ongoing struggle over fiscal policy; and many other momentous economic and political events.

With a compelling and candid voice and a sharp eye for detail, Rubin portrays the daily life of the White House-confronting matters both mighty and mundane--as astutely as he examines the challenges that lie ahead for the nation. Part political memoir, part prescriptive economic analysis, and part personal look at business problems, In an Uncertain World is a deep examination of Washington and Wall Street by a figure who for three decades has been at the center of both worlds.

Review
"As Secretary of the Treasury, Bob Rubin ranked with the best.  This drama-packed account of his years on the job should be read by all who are interested in what happens when politics and economics intersect."
-Warren Buffett

"Robert Rubin in one of the most brilliant and honorable wise men of our era, and he has produced an extraordinary book. It is both fascinating and readable. With charming candor and a wealth of lessons, it provides an exciting account of his life on Wall Street
and of his tenure as the presidential adviser and Treasury Secretary. But it is also a very personal book filled with tales and insights about his relationships with such key players as Alan Greenspan, Larry Summers and President Bill Clinton. This is destined to be one of the most important books, as well as one of the most enjoyable and enlightening, published in our time."
-Walter Isaacson

"Bob Rubin takes us behind the closed doors and into the nerve center of Wall Street, the White House and the Treasury Department during a historic time in the global economy. It's a fascinating and highly instructive tale told by a man who is uniquely qualified to guide us through these monumental political and economic challenges."
-Tom Brokaw

"Robert Rubin served with distinction as Secretary of Treasury during a period of turbulence in international financial markets. He has now written an engrossing and thoughtful book about his experiences. Even those who do not agree with some of his conclusions, will find this important reading."
-Henry Kissinger

"When historians look back on the 1990s, they will almost certainly ask how the greatest economic expansion in American history happened. Robert Rubin's forthright and fascinating memoir will be the place to begin. With the meticulousness of a scholar and an appealing lack of vanity, Rubin has written the kind of book that important figures in history should write but seldom do."
-Michael Beschloss

CLASSY, HUMBLE AND SMART
By Denis Benchimol Minev
Mr. Rubin is one of the most outstanding figures, both in the private and public sectors, of the last few years. In this book, Rubin maintains his posture as a man of few, carefully chosen words, which helps us understand the reasons for his success.
In its structure, this is a typical biography, tracking his childhood influences and his early years as a student at Harvard and Yale, then his career at Goldman. His success at Goldman is clearly understated, since he nowhere mentions being very sucessful at anything he did. Then he explains his entrance into government through fundraising, giving interesting advice to those interested in joining politics. However, the most interesting portion of the book, from my standpoint of international economics, is his work during the economics crises from 1995 to 1999.
Rubin explains in great detail the policy choices made at the time and the diplomacy going on behind the rescue plans for Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia and Russia. For anyone who followed the markets during that period, this book provides new insights into the real workings of politicians and economists in trying to avert a global meltdown.
Rubin also provides two interesting analyses: first, his method of making decisions, through probabilistic analysis. Though obvious, most people clearly do not understand or follow it, so it is important to outline its characteristics, which Rubin does well. His main point is that a decision can be the right one even if it leads to failure. The second analysis is one of the current economic condition and the direction in which the country is going. Rubin is critical of the recent tax cuts and raises worries about the future of the US eocnomy based on the large deficits being accumulated and the future prognostics for social security.
Overall, it is an outstanding work, one that gives insights and teaches one about history and how to think. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in politics or economics, but especially anyone interested in international economics and globalization.

Nice Read and a Useful intro to Economic Topics
By M. A Netzley
My decision to read this book was based on an editorial I read many months ago in the Wall Street Journal. I remember the Journal's editors announcing that they thought "Rubin was probably correct" about some policy regarding interest rates and the deficit. Frankly, I didn't much understand the admission at the time but made a mental note. One day I wanted to make some time and understand this issue.
Needless to say, I was excited to have that opportunity sooner rather than later. I saw Mr. Rubin's book mentioned in the Financial Times, recalled the editorial, and immediately bought the book. In short, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only do I now understand the relationship between America's deficit and interest rates, but I have a whole new appreciation for topics such as arbitrage, probabilistic thinking, political uncertainties, bailouts of other countries, the interconnectedness of economies in a globalized world, and for Mr. Rubin himself.
The book is one part autobiography, one part business and political memoir, and one part economic instruction (101 level, for people like me). We learn about Mr. Rubin's upbringing, the fortuitous circumstances that took him to Harvard and later Goldman Sachs, the challemges of building an arbitrage department, and of course the challenges of the Clinton years and serving as the Secretary of Treasury. No doubt Mr. Rubin has lived a good and interesting life, and I enjoyed following his account and many observations.
One nice aspect of this book is that I don't feel like I am reading a highly biased or revisionist spin on history. Sadly, the same cannot be said of other characters from the Clinton administration (e.g., R. Holbrook). I have read enough about the Clinton administration to feel that the author is giving a pretty fair account of events and people. I also appreciate his taking the time to make slightly complex ideas very clear and simple, such as arbitrage or the relationship between deficits and interest rates. Finally, when reading his accounts of international financial crises, I felt the tensions of a very difficult decision. Mr. Rubin has convinced me that the choices we face when dealing with international economic crises are never as simple as the media pundits would have us believe. These are very complex issues with good arguments on both sides--and our leaders must make decisions. I like to think I have a greater appreciation for just how difficult these decisions must be.
I can't claim this book was as interesting as a good mystery or a John Fowles novel, but compared to other nonfiction this is a very enjoyable and fairly well-written book. I feel like I have learned something about economics, business, politics, and the author. I am left with the sense that talking with Rubin about these issues, over a cup of coffee, would be very rewarding. He has an interesting mind. I guess this book is worthwhile for that fact alone--it has made Mr. Rubin's interesting thoughts available in a very readable style.

The best book of short stories you will find.
By Michele
I adored this book, from the first short story to the last.
(my taste is high style, low action, extreme wit, somewhat self absorbed subtle use of language. This was much like a Flannery O'Connor short story book, very feminine voice, rich with details and descriptions)
It melts into your mind with the most subtle use of language and sound I have encountered in a very long time. This is not a woman who made her living as a short story or fiction writer and so her name will not ring any bells (she wrote for technical magazines and scientific journals). These stories are delicate and respectful of the characters, they are intelligently written and they create a world that will welcome you and make you feel as though you once lived there. Each story floats into the others, but each has its own small world to reveal. She explores the lives of very different people, even though they live in a similar context. She develops the characters quickly, easily, while never letting them become stereotypes. Each story is a perfect morsel. If you love to read, you will find it hard to accept that she did not spend her life doing nothing but writing these perfect moments.

Marvelous short story collection
By A Customer
This is a marvelous collection of short stories. I read the first story and thought, "Well, this is probably going to be my favorite of the lot." Then, I read the third story and thought, "No, this is the one. It's perfect." And so on, and so on.
Mary Ladd Gavell was born in Cuero, Texas and she died at the age of 47 in 1967 - the year I was born. Mrs. Gavell's stories capture the voices of the women I've known so much better than some of the newer "Southern fiction" I've read lately.
I feel sure this will be my next book club selection, and I think I'm going to want to go back and reread some of these stories regularly. Please, buy a copy of your own. I promise you'll enjoy it.

Ranks with best short story fiction of 20th Century
By idle hands
I discovered this collection of stories by accident when I gave the book to my wife (a writer) as a gift. What a gift!

I'm insufficiently eloquent to describe the elegance and insight of M.L. Gavell's stories. All I can tell you is that every single person to whom I've either given a copy or recommended the book was astonished that they'd never heard of her.

Gavell will, inevitably and inexcusably, be stereotyped as a "woman's writer". This would be a shame as her stories are nothing if not universal in feeling and understanding.

The Art of the Moving Picture (Modern Library Movies), by Vachel Lindsay

"In the field of film aesthetics, it is the first important American work, still important--The Art of the Moving Picture is astonishing."
--Stanley Kauffmann

Written in 1915, The Art of the Moving Picture by poet Vachel Lindsay is the first book to treat movies as art. Lindsay writes a brilliant analysis of the early silent films (including several now lost films). He is extraordinarily prescient about the future of moviemaking--particularly about the business, the prominence of technology, and the emergence of the director as the author of the film.

From the Back Cover
"This is a joyous and wonderful performance," said Francis Hackett, when he reviewed this book in the New Republic of December 25, 1915, "a bold and brilliant theory, really bold and really brilliant, and takes first place as an inspiration of the greatest popular aesthetic phenomenon in the world."

The Art of the Moving Picture is astonishing, as a work of analysis and vision. Over fifty years ago Lindsay saw the hunger that still obsesses the film enthusiast. Sculpture-in-motion, painting-in-motion, architecture-in-motion are nuggets out of which he refines subtle perceptions.

Lindsay sees, in 1915, the revolution in human perception involved in the very existence of film. There is a clear prediction of McLuhan in "Edison is the new Gutenberg. He has invented the new printing." Lindsay sees, in 1915, the quintessence of the auteur theory of film criticism, formulated some forty years later: "An artistic photoplay . . . is not a factory-made staple article, but the product of the creative force of one soul, the flowering of a spirit that has the habit of perpetually renewing itself."

This book is a considerable marvel. Lindsay had a clear sense that a profound change was taking place, not only in cultural history but in all human histories―the external and also the most secret. And, poet and evangelist that he was, he saw some fundamental ways to understand and use the change. Francis Hackett concluded his review in 1915: "He has initiated photoplay criticism. That is a big thing to have done, and he has done it, to use his own style, with Action, Intimacy, and Friendliness, and Splendor."

About the Author
Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and then in New York with Robert Henri before becoming a poet. He was a member of the Modernist School (others included Ezra Pound,e. e. cummings, and Wallace Stevens) and published over a dozen collections of poetry.

quite astonishing
By Martijn13Maart1970
Quite astonishing, wrote one critic, and this, often very dreamy, book of 1915!!! is exactly this. I am not a movie critic, just a reader and this book was a delight to read. It deals about the era of the silent movies, around 1915 when there were no Rambos or Terminators running across the screen with Qsound and computerised warping effects. It was the time when everything had to be expressed in gestures, like a moving picture book, because of the lack of sound.
The author therefore comes with a lot of interesting theories and opinions of how a story could and should be elegantly communicated in a moving picture. He even comes up with a theory of why California is as crazy as Hollywood seems to most of us now.
This work has to be a classic of movie pictures, just like The Art of War for the military, or Keynes for economics, and for people that are, like me, just interested readers of all kind of subjects, also highly recommended.

Like a time capsule
By pike
For any lover of the Silver Screen, 'The Art of the Moving Picture', is a treasure.

This book shows us the movie business, and motion pictures, in their infancy.
The first hand discussion of the subject in it's earliest stages, is fascinating, as are the ideas expressed therein.
I felt as if I was witnessing the birth of an art form.
The book treats Motion Pictures as a fine art. One that, with nearly 100 years of hindsight, is appropriate and gives one an idea of the strides that were made in the field.
To know what Movies are and were in all the years since the publication of this work adds another layer to the read.
One can appreciate those first bold steps when one recognizes how far the art has come.
A truly great book and worth the read for anyone who loves the art of film.

though definitely dated in style and subject, it never the less delivers a wholly wonderful glimpse into our entertainment past.

Archaic Style, Invaluable Reference
By Barry Sharpe
One of the earliest compilations of movie history, this book serves motion picture buffs on several levels. First, it gives a view of films as art in the silent era. Secondly one sees film techniques thought innovative fifty years later. Finally, the people involved were the author's contemporaries, allowing a view both compelling and provocative.
By 1915 motion pictures were maturing. To glean an understanding of their development is essential if one is a student of their history. This book adds to the realization that already many in the industry were making sophisticated productions captivating eager audiences.
At the same time, one would be remiss not to inform the reader that the archaic style of this book may be troubling. But in one hundred years the book will still have merit, this review most likely will not.

Amazon.com Review
"My eyes see. His eyes see. I see him. And he sees me." With text as simple as simple can be, Theo. LeSieg (a.k.a. Theodore Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) uses humor and rhythm to encourage the very youngest children to discover the joy of reading. A big-eyed boy and a pink-eyed rabbit cavort through the book, seeing everything there is to see: a girl, a horse, an old tin can, the sun, the moon--even pink underpants (which makes them both blush). Rhyming objects give the brief "story" a lilting, happy cadence, and Joe Mathieu's cartoonish colorful pictures provide easy clues to the text. This is a friendly introduction to the wide, wondrous world of seeing and reading.

An offspring of the world-famous Beginner Books, Bright and Early Books for Beginning Beginners are designed for an even younger age group. Even preschoolers will be inspired to learn to read with these witty, appealing picture books. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter

From the Inside Flap
"Our eyes see flies.
Our eyes see ants.
Sometimes they see
pink underpants.
Oh, say can you see? Dr. Seuss's hilarious ode to eyes gives little ones a whole new appreciation for all the wonderful things to be seen!

About the Author
Theodor Seuss Geisel - better known to millions of his fans as Dr. Seuss - was born the son of a park superintendent in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1904. After studying at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, and later at Oxford University in England, he became a magazine humorist and cartoonist, and an advertising man. He soon turned his many talents to writing children's books, and his first book - And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street - was published in 1937. His greatest claim to fame was the one and only The Cat in the Hat, published in 1957, the first of a hugely successful range of early learning books known as Beginner Books.

my 20 month old's pick - 1st time mom at 44
By A Customer
The Foot Book made it into my son's library by accident but he loved it so much at only 12 months that I looked for other 'body part' books by Dr. Seuss. The Eye book has elicited similar interest on a more 'thotful' scale. He turned to me a week after the book arrived and said 'wink eye pink eye'. Oh the wonderful sights the little boy and his pink rabbit see with their big, buggy eyes. And the inevitable 'hooray, hooray, hooray for EYES' ending continues to captivate my busy little boy who takes this book to his favorite spot when he needs to be quiet for a while. Of course, we now have the tooth book and the nose book en route for a long airplane ride.

excellent practice
By Great Faulkner's Ghost
Princeton Review challenges the ETS (the test's creator) party line on prepping and coaching. By studying patterns in the ETS answer choices and question sequences, Princeton Review came up with what it calls the Joe Blog approach. At its core, Joe Blog says that on easy questions, go for the obvious answer that Joe Blog (a hypothetical Joe-Average) would guess; on the hard ones, avoid the "obvious answers, because they are "tricks" to fool Joe Blog. Even for top scorers, the Joe Blog techniques could add points by increasing the odds of successfully making educated guesses on the toughest questions. Moreover, the Princeton Review writers do provide excellent practice beyond the Joe Blog approach. They seem to have studied the content of the test better than most authors. If there is one flaw, it is that the explanations to the practice questions need a lot of work.

While not perfectfor everyone, this book is still an important and helpful resource. I do recommend this book overall.

Get the newer edition, though not much has changed
By Chris from CEEAE
Please note that there is a newer version of this book available: Cracking the SAT, 2007 edition. Not much has changed between these two editions, but its probably best to have the newer edition, if you have the option of purchasing either edition.

This book as well as more than 20 other SAT prep books are reviewed and ranked on CEEAE dot org. Every book review has a direct link to its page on Amazon, so you can read the reviews, view the rankings and then return to Amazon to purchase your selections.

The following is an abridged review from CEEAE dot org:

This is the standard anti-SAT book. This book seems primarily designed to demystify and understand the SAT. The vast majority of the text focuses on how to approach test questions and effective strategies. It also has probably the best set of strategies for the typical student. Other books may have better strategies for advanced students (Kaplan SAT 2400 or Barron's 2400), but they lack practice tests. The math, vocabulary, and grammar reviews are concise and effective.

This book has 7 practice exams, but only 3 of them are in the book, the other 4 are on the accompanying CD-ROM. The tests are extremely accurate. In fact, only The Official SAT Study Guide has more accurate exams. However, The Official SAT Study Guide does not have explanations for their practice exams, only the answers. This book does have explanations to every question. Also, the tests in this book contain an equating section, but those in The Official SAT Study Guide do not. Hence, some have concluded that the tests in this book are preferable to those in The Official SAT Study Guide.

This book, however, is not without its flaws. The first is that it overuses the "Joe Bloggs" method. This method is worthwhile, but many students have found themselves confused when they take the actual exam and try to apply this method to the questions on the exam. Another issue is that we definitely disagree with some of the strategies in this book. For example, this book tells the student to not read the passage. We could not disagree with strategy more. No one other than the Princeton Review recommends this strategy and for good reason, it doesn't work. Without going into too much detail, the student must read the passage and suggesting otherwise is a sure prescription for a disastrous Critical Reading score, trust me I have seen it happen time and again.

Solid prep book but practice tests could have been better
By hummer
Overall this book provides very good strategies for people who would rather study themselves than take a course. Joe Blog is an asset, and understanding him really helped me to root out wrong answers to alot of questions. However, the practice tests contained a few flaws and I felt some of the questions were unlike those on the actual SAT. Definetly a solid prep book, but consider the collegeboard one for better tests (although this book does provide explanations to all its questions unlike the collegeboard book).

Sundown, Yellow Moon: A Novel, by Larry Watson

Forty years after the suicide of his best friend’s father, a writer revisits the tragedy and tries to unravel the mystery behind one man’s inexplicable actions on that icy January day in 1961. Through his own recollections and his fiction–sometimes impossible to separate–he attempts to make sense of a senseless act and, in the process, to examine his youth, his connection to his best friend, Gene, and the enigma of Marie, a beautiful girl whose heart once belonged to both of them and whose spell still lingers through the decades.

Spare, haunting, lyrical, Sundown, Yellow Moon is a piercing study of love and betrayal, grief and desire, youth and remembrance. Larry Watson not only brings to life a distinct period in history but, most affectingly, reveals the interplay of memory, secrets, and the passage of time.

Praise for Sundown, Yellow Moon:

“Watson succeeds impressively, especially in deepening our understanding of first love.”
–Alan Cheuse, Chicago Tribune

“A marvelous evocation of a time and place and of high school existence when it was considerably less ferocious than it is today . . . [Sundown, Yellow Moon] twitches aside the curtain to reveal the menace and mendacity lurking behind placid and mundane lives.”
–Minneapolis Star Tribune

“[An] oddly heartbreaking story: allowed to run amok, the past becomes a monster capable of devouring the present.”
–Booklist

“Larry Watson takes the less-traveled roads, through landscapes and heartscapes vaguely familiar, intensely poetic and always jangling. . . . He has established himself as one of the leading poetic realists, painting his stories across the canvas of interiors: small-town America and the human heart.”

From Publishers Weekly
The unnamed, not-entirely-reliable narrator of this novel of obsession from Watson (In a Dark Time) aims his imaginative faculties at discovering, through fiction, the truth of an incident from his adolescence in Bismarck, N.Dak. In trying to figure out why, in 1961, his best friend's father shot a state senator and then hanged himself, the writer tries out a number of different scenarios via short fictions and simple speculation, including mental illness, romantic rivalry, a festering real estate swindle and a looming corruption scandal. The fictions-within-a-fiction are a clever conceit, but ponderous discussion of the pieces weakens it. More problematic is that the specifics of the larger tale aren't engineered to go as far as Watson wants to take them. The book's greatest strength, alongside its palpable sense of place, is its rich period detail—including the inescapability of cigarette smoking, in which nearly every character hungrily indulges. But even the narrator's own mother, initially absorbed by the case, loses interest in it rather swiftly, so it should be no surprise that the relentless analysis of minutiae comes to feel like harping. From Booklist
Watson's novels share an elegiac tone. His melancholy narrators speak softly and sadly about the obsessions that have dominated their lives. So it is in this story of an unnamed writer whose entire career has been aimed at making sense of a tragedy that occurred in North Dakota in 1961. On that day, the father of the narrator's best friend shot a state senator and killed himself. Naturally, the question of why it happened becomes the talk of middle-class Bismarck, but it is much more than that for our narrator and his father, who discovered the body. Watson mixes the narrator's reflections on the tragedy and its effect on his later life with snippets from his short fiction, which offer various explanations for what happened. As we read, however, we realize that the real tragedy is not what happened then but what is happening now—to the narrator and to the lives he touches. The problem here is that the narrator's obsession is not the reader's, and eventually we tire of his theories. But that's the point in this oddly heartbreaking story: allowed to run amok, the past becomes a monster capable of devouring the present. Ott, Bill

Growing Up With Tragedy
By Richard S. Wheeler
This is really a coming of age novel about three high school students whose lives are deeply affected by a mysterious murder and suicide done by the father of one of them. One of those students, the narrator, is haunted by the event and seeks reasons for tragedy, along with many others in North Dakota. But this obsessive wish to understand the tragedy, if only to achieve closure, is less central to Mr. Watson's story than the impact it had on those high school students. These events largely play out in the joys and sorrows of young love. The boy whose father shot a politician and then hanged himself is permanently scarred by the tragedy, which stains everything he does thereafter, and especially his relationships with women. Larry Watson depicts these events powerfully, with heartrending tenderness as he follows the lives of his young protagonists into their middle years. Mr. Watson sensitively catches the early 60s milieu, thus framing his story in the moral and spiritual values of the those times. He is a major American novelist, one of the finest writing in these times. The sheer force and truth and honesty of his novel reaches the heart and soul of his readers.

I'm a HUGE Larry Watson fan...
By Richard Cumming
That being said, I was not very impressed with his latest book. The first warning sign was the cover. It depicts a couple kissing. Very un-Watsonlike. Not that his characters don't kiss but it strikes me as a flagrant attempt by his publisher to expand Watson's audience by appealing to new readers who might think that this book is a romance. It's not.

Watson writes superbly about life in the desolate Dakotas. This book is set mostly in Bismarck, North Dakota, in the early 1960's. His narrator is a writer looking back 40 years to that time when his neighbor (and best friend) experienced a family tragedy. This tragic event changes the courses of several lives, including the narrator's.

Unfortunately, the narrator is not your typical Watson character. Watson has a gift for allowing us to see inside the uptight souls of windburned and stoic prairie people. The reader keeps hoping that our narrator will stop being so detached from his own passions and personal history. It doesn't happen. It is almost impossible to like this person. He doesn't inspire sympathy. He is wooden. Even when he describes moments of lust they are analytic and robotic.

At the end of the book he even admits his failure as a person to express his true feelings and how it has destroyed his relationships. It almost seems like this is Watson's way of admitting that he has blown the opportunity to satisfy us, his readers.

You can't score a touchdown on every run. Watson punts. Maybe next time.

An obsession which lasts for over forty years
By Bobby D.
The structure of this story is in the first person with our narrator who is a writer looking back over forty years. He searches his memory for a solution to a 40 year old crime. The year of focus here is 1962 and our narrator is graduating from high school. (I also graduated in 1962.) Down the block his best friend's father has hung himself in the garage shortly after assassinating a State Senator. All this takes place in Bismarck, North Dakota. The winding road of the story, like all of Larry Watson's work, is really built around this suicide as a devise to hook the reader. And it does, at least it did me. Although I much preferred Watson's classic MONTANA 1948 and his WHITE CROSSES I found YELLOW MOON to be a worthwhile and interesting diversion. I am not sure Watson's devise of adding the narrator's own fiction as an aside in most chapters worked for me. It appeared to slow down the narrative of the story. Otherwise this could have been a real page turner. Without going more into the plot let me leave it to say that our young narrator falls in love in a very convincing way and that relationship's impact and his obsession with the idea of it has resonated within him for over forty years. I'm sure this is a story and group of characters that will remain with me for some time. As an aside this subject and story reminded me of another similar story and thus gives me a chance to mention a book which given to me for Christmas in 1960, A SENSE OF VALUES, by Sloan Wilson. You may know Wilson as the author of THE MAN IN THE GRAY FLANNEL SUIT and SUMMER PLACE. In VALUES Wilson's has his narrator looking back over his life finding he has achieved success while suffering great personal failure. That book had a great impact on me. I doubt it is even sure it is in print today but if you can find it, or any of his other books by Sloan Wilson I would recommend them to you. (Also, if you have a chance check out the audio book of Montana 1948 read by Bo Bridges. It is quite extraordinary.)
