A broad overview which does not dent the Boies veneer.

I like the fact that Ms. Donovan had such close access to Mr. Boies in writing this biography. It is a little embarrassing but fun to
read that Mr. Boies' jaw 'locks' when he is angry.

There are a lot of meals in this book, so do not read it on a empty stomach. The book talks about Mr. Boies' formative years. We
learn he is dyslexic, but we do not learn what he did to counteract this and graduate from Yale Law School.

Thoroughly engaging

Karen Donovan's book is something of a biography, a Grisham novel, a history book, and a litigation primer all wrapped into one. (As a litigator, I'm actually thinking that some of the strategies related in the book would be helpful for me in court.) Thoroughly engaging and entertaining, Ms. Donovan has a great deal of respect for her subject's talents but is careful not to gloss over his significant flaws.

The Inside Scoop

In this insightful and yeomanly researched book, Karen Donovan paints a vivid picture of a man who has achieved iconic status among America's trial lawyers. Thanks to the access granted the author by David Boies, we get not only a ringside seat for some of the last decade's most high-profile trials, including, of course, the one that put the current occupant of the White House in office, but we're there for pre-trial strategy sessions and post-trial dinners as well. Throughout, Donovan maintains a keen-eyed objectivity and isn't afraid to deflate balloons of bravado when need be. All in all, it's a compelling read.

In an industry not known for risk-taking, the publisher is to be congratulated for offering Ghosh (The Calcutta Chromosome) a contract on his as-yet-unwritten novel. Set primarily in Burma, Malaya, and India, this work spans from 1885, when the British sent the King of Burma into exile, to the present. While it does offer brief glimpses into the history of the region, it is more the tale of a family and how historical events influenced real lives. As a young boy, Rajkumar, an Indian temporarily stranded in Mandalay, finds himself caught up in the British invasion that led to the exile of Burma's last king. In the chaos, he spies Dolly, a household maid in the royal palace, for whom he develops a consuming passion and whom years later he tracks down in India and marries. As their family grows and their lives intersect with others, the tangled web of local and international politics is brought to bear, changing lives as well as nations. Ghosh ranges from the condescension of the British colonialists to the repression of the current Myanmar (Burmese) regime in a style that suggests E.M. Forster as well as James Michener. Highly recommended, especially for public libraries.

This sprawling narrative, inspired by stories passed down in the author's family, stretches from the British invasion of Burma, in 1885, through the country's independence, to the uneasy military rule of the present day. The novel is presided over by the Indian-born Rajkumar, a poor orphan, who falls for Dolly, a servant of the exiled queen. Ghosh renders the polite imprisonment of the Burmese royal family in India and the lush, dangerous atmosphere of teak camps in the Burmese forest with fine detail–– a perfect balance for the broad strokes of romance and serendipity that drive the story forward. The book's memorial power is so strong that, near the end, when Rajkumar, an old man, reflects, "Ah, Burma––now Burma was a golden land," the reader catches himself nodding in recognition of what was lost.

The Story of the Indian Diaspora in the East

Amitava Ghosh is an outstanding member of the new genre of writers of Indian literature in English. His niche is combining history with fiction. In his previous books he focused on India's longstanding ties with Arabia. In the Glass Palace he moves to the East: Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia & Singapore. Through his story he highlights a number of important but neglected historical issues: slavery in the East - poor Indians shipped to plantations in the Far East; racism in the British Indian Army & the moral dilemma of Indian soldiers confronted with the Indian National Army fighting for India's freedom; treatment of the Burmese royalty when they came in the way of the English colonial trade in teak; and finally the enterprise of the businessmen of the Indian Diaspora. All through these events, he creates wonderful characters that we can feel and touch. The story line starts at a gentle pace but in the end is gripping, and the book is difficult to put down. It is also laced with erotica ala Indian style for the first time in his books. The only problem is the Indian publisher printed so few copies of the first edition that bookshops were out of stock before the reviews could hit the press.

3 Stars with an extra star for satisfaction and texture

I have the feeling that _The Glass Palace_ is in some ways a better history book than novel. It is nearly impossible not to admire it as an achievement-- the richness of the detail is astonishing as is the mood that the detail manages to create. We follow a family through three generations as they try to negotiate identity in both the colonial and post-colonial worlds.
Unfortunately, the structure and characterization in the novel do not live up to the quality of the historic and atmospheric detail. The book follows a fairly standard rags-to-riches story format, and in many cases the characters lack the complexity that Ghosh is able to bring to the surrounding environment. It's a disappointing lack in an otherwise stunning work.
It's worth saying as well that I found _The Glass Palace_ an incredibly *satisfying* read. I literally had a really hard time putting it down, and kept it in my purse to read on my lunch breaks and while waiting in lines. I suppose that's a fairly high recommendation in and of itself.

History was never made so beautiful

Writing a semi-fiction, rather, a piece of literature whose many characters and incidences are by no means fictitious, is an arduous task, but Ghosh manages to accomplish it with a rare aplomb. Technically Ghosh is superb, painting a vivid picture of the period and the different cultures (Burmese and Bengali in particular) and their evolution. He maintains a delicate balance between the evolution of the historical, 'non-fictitious', characters and events and those which are the produce of his imaginations. I can't help admiring Ghosh for his ability to create characters who seem so so real that makes me feel as if I have personal acquintance with them, and this feat he manages to achieve in all his books, The Circle of Reasons, The Shadow Lines (my eternal favourite) and also Calcutta Chromosomes. I had picked up this book with apprehension that he won't be able to live up to the promise that he has created himself through his previous works, but by the time I reached halfway I realised that my apprehensions were grossly misplaced. Each character is subtly crafted out in detail and their evolution couldn't be more natural. It's definitely a very good read.

These three books are permanently placed on my working desk, next to my portable computer. I find them very useful as reference guides to writing smart.

The first two books have a combined inventory of almost 1,700 important words. They have been written by Adam Robinson & The Princeton Review Team. As some readers may know, Adam Robinson happens to be also the author of 'What Smart Students Know' a very good book about smart study techniques. The two books are originally targetted at students preparing for SAT & other standardised tests, but I find them very useful for working professionals.

The third book has an inventory of over 4,000 important business terms, covering quite a broad spectrum of business disciplines. It has been written by a noted financial planning expert.

I enjoy browsing these three books from time to time. I often refer to them as I write my daily business correspondence as well as my reviews on amazon website.

I strongly recommend these three books to readers who want to communicate effectively, be more persuasive & more importantly, get more from your reading.

I bought it for my daughter who is listening the audio CDs from same author. The CDs organized differently from book. She found the words from this book while listening CDs. It's great to use the book with CDs together.

About the Author
Frederick P. Hitz was born in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Princeton and Harvard Law School. He entered the Central Intelligence Agency as an operations officer in 1967, and Aldrich Ames was in his training class. After 1973 he served at the Departments of State, Defense, and Energy, leading to a second stint with the CIA from 1978 to 1982 as legislative counsel to the director of Central Intelligence and deputy chief of operations for Europe. In 1990, Hitz was appointed the first stautory inspector general of the CIA by President Bush and served in this post until May 1998, when he retired to begin a teaching career at the Woodrow Wilson School of Princeton University. Hitz has received medals for distinguished service in the Department of Defense and the Defense Intelligence Agency's Distinguished Medal. He lives in northern Virginia.

An Insider's Introduction....

In 2004's "The Great Game", author Frederick Hitz faces the inevitable challenge of every former intelligence officer in discussing his trade: much of what he knows is likely still classified. In preparing a class on intelligence for university students, Hitz chose an interesting way to approach this challenge. He compars our popular view of espionage as presented in novels and film with real-life declassified cases, mostly from the Cold War. The result is a concise, well-written, and fascinating introduction into the intelligence business.

Hitz systematically examines a variety of topics: recruitment, betrayal, bureaucracy, counterintelligence, and a variety of aspects of tradecraft, both human and technical. He enlivens his narrative with fictional examples from a century's worth of spy fiction, from Rudyard Kipling's "Kim" to the latest John LeCarre and Tom Clancy novels. His real life points of comparison include Russians who spied for the US (Popov and Penkovsky) and Americans who spied for the Soviets (Ames and Hanssen). His examples are drawn primarily from American and British spy fiction and actual espionage.

Many of Hitz's more thoughtful insights are those of a Cold War veteran who watched others squeezed by the pressures of double and even triple lives, or were undermined by doubts in their respective causes. He knowledges that much of espionage can be redundant or futile, but he is quick to note that good intelligence is often essential to national survival. His closing chapters address the new and different challenge of fanatical non-nation state threats like al-Qaeda.

"The Great Game" is highly recommended as an accessible introduction to the intelligence business.

This book, along with "Why Spy" covers topics that were within my professional purview in the 1960's and, thus, I will attest to the accuracy of the author's discourse. The business can be boring, deadly, even historic, but it has been and remains necessary. I recommend this work to anyone looking for a good introduction to a delicate topic.

A Decent Intro to the World of Espionage

This book was written by a former CIA operative who now teaches intelligence topics in the university. Along those lines, this book is written with the university student audience in mind. In other words, it is a decent intro to the world of espionage, written with an academic style. There is much of interest in the book, but at the same time some of the same examples get repeated over and over. A few of the chapters were great, and some were just so-so. Also, if you are not familiar with some of the famous spy literature such as Le Carre and Graham Greene you may find yourself a little lost on some of the examples. Overall a decent book on the topic--probably just right for a college course.

a comparative guide to the guides

I am familiar with, I think, every AP Micro- and Macroeconomics prep guide currently on the market, having worked extensively with all of them. The first three I list below are fairly interchangeable; I have no clear winner to announce if you're having trouble making a decision.

As far as I know, all of the editions below are out of date in the sense that they still include a lot of discussion of the Keynesian Consumption Function (aka the "Keynesian Cross") diagram on their macro sections. As of summer 2008, this was removed by the AP board from their list of graphs you have to know.

These books haven't caught up yet with that major change. (Be warned that although that graph will not appear on the free response section, the Keynesian multipliers involved with it may still appear on the multiple-choice section.)

Anyhow, here are my comments in full:

Princeton Review: Cracking the AP
This is apparently the most popular title on the subject of preparing for these two AP economics exams, but I suspect this may be due to superior marketing on the publisher's part rather than anything else. The explanation section is a little elliptical to use for anything other than review. If you're trying to conquer the exam merely with a test guide, then this would be a bad choice for you. On the plus side, the difficulty of the practice questions herein resembles most convincingly that of those found on the actual AP exam: I've noticed other guides seem slightly too easy. I put this at the top of the list because Princeton comes out with a new edition nearly every year, unlike the other publishers. This means that mistakes are kept to a minimum, and the book's contents can change with the contents of the AP exam itself, which the College Board occasionally makes adjustments to.

Barron's AP 2005 (make sure you get the second edition)
I suppose this is probably the best one, but as I said, there's no clear leader. Its advantages are that the explanation sections (with the exception of the one on international trade and exchange) are the best and most readable. But there is only one practice exam. Worse, some of the things that I know are on the AP exam, such as the production function and the three-sectioned Keynesian supply curve, make no appearance in this book. I would probably buy this one in combination with the McGraw-Hill one to be really safe: focusing on the explanations from this one, but bracing yourself for the level of difficulty you see in the McGraw-Hill questions. Be sure to get the revised 2008 edition if you choose this one: the previous edition had a lot of errors. This one doesn't.

McGraw-Hill: 5 Steps to a 5
A solid job. It has two practice exams, but I believe there are a handful of concepts covered by the AP exams that simply are not covered in its explanation sections. I suspect the level of difficulty is actually a couple of degrees above what you can expect on the real exam.

Kaplan AP Microeconomics/Macroeconomics
On the plus side, I can say the Kaplan has a useful glossary at the end. But the questions simply aren't hard enough: they're not reflective of what you're going to see on the actual exam. In addition to this, there are definitely about 5 or 6 errors in the practice exam they give you.

Cliff's Ron Pirayoff
Avoid this disaster. Written by a former teacher at Burbank High School, it's riddled with errors. Not typing errors: downright errors. The author's knowledge of economics was not equal to the task of writing such a guide: he is frequently dead wrong about things. Many of the questions have more than one correct answer, and some have none. I hope this thing will soon go out of print.

Rudman's Questions and Answers to the AP Macroeconomics
A monstrosity. Privately published, evidently by some guy in his garage. This is not a joke: the thing is spiral bound, and the font suggests it was crafted by some old-fashioned typewriter. None of this means the book is bad though, although this book is bad nevertheless. It's almost unbelievable. Undoubtedly the worst book on this list. There is no explanations section; there are no free-response questions: there is nothing but practice multiple choice questions. But these are highly abstruse, riddled with errors, contain no explanations of the answers and, most inexcusably, decline to employ the kind of terminology and graphing models beloved by the makers of the actual AP Exam. In fact, there is not a single graph anywhere in the book. You probably think I'm kidding.

Economics for Dummies
Despite the title, if you're going to try to ace the AP Macro and Micro exams with just one book, I would have to say this is the best choice I'm aware of. Not too hard, not too easy. Although it has no practice exercises, your understanding of all concepts covered -- and in the way the College Board likes them covered, and using their terminology -- will be most meaningfully strengthened by an extended acquaintance with this volume. My colleagues and I have been repeatedly astonished to see how well done it is; it contains all the graphs, charts, and equations that you'll need. And though the book doesn't make one mention of the AP exams, honesty compels me to list it here because I regard it as the most comprehensively helpful prep guide for these 2 tests. The only disadvantage I can think of is that you might feel less than kingly with this title under your arms. But are you interested in results, or what?

After taking the test, I can say that this book was very helpful in learning the material without actually taking the course. I found no flaw in the book, though I wish I had started reviewing earlier. Make sure you practice drawing the graphs like they say, because you are going to need them for the exam.

Truly amazing book for AP Econs

I dont know if this will be a good review for this book
but I want to say that this book was truly amazing for me to
study AP economics without any help of others.

I bought this book in Feb and studied a month.
I didn't have any background knowledge about introductory economics.
Probably I can say that the only thing that I knew was "supply and demand." and that's why I had hard times studying alone with the book.

So I searched for a private institution but it didn't quite satisfy my expectation. It seemed the teacher didn't prepare much for the class.
so after 4 or 5 days, I quit it and started again with the book.

I read and wrote the book about 20 times I think.
Even though I couldn't understand some parts, I just passed the chapters
and came back later. I used the Internet a little bit, too.

and in March and April, I couldn't study AP at all because of the midterm exam in my highschool. and for about 2 weeks in May, I reviewed what I've done during the winter vacation.

I finally got 5 on both Micro and Macro. I think almost all(99%) questions on real AP exams are quite similar to those of this Princeton AP book.

Being able to draw graphs without looking the book and to explain on your own words are the key elements for AP Econ, I think.

(Sorry for my poor English. I am actually Korean and it was particularly difficult to study because English is my second language.)

I was also left with a much better understanding of spiritualism

What a delightful read. Sorry for the cliche but I truly couldn't put it down. Croke's poetic prose about Ruth's quest - so much more than just a travelogue - kept me mesmerized on every page. Besides the bittersweet story of yesteryear's fascination with (and mistreatment of) exotic animals, I was also left with a much better understanding of spiritualism, China on the cusp of Communism and America's support of Chiang Kai-Shek. And of Ruth, who was a tortured but totally fascinating woman. Extremely well-written.

This was an interesting book of another period in history. It would have been most enlightening to have been able to read Ruth Harkness' actual book. I felt most sorrowful for the pandas who where caught in the tug-of-war between mighty egos which led to many animals' deaths.

He lived much of his later life as a reclusive semi-invalid in a sound-proofed flat in Paris giving himself over entirely to writing IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME.

a splendid translation and my favorite volume thus far

I am writing here of the "Penguin Proust" translation by John Sturrock. (Much of what appears on this page is misleading, with the editorial matter referring to an audiobook and many reader reviews to an earlier translation. Even first-sentence quote is not from Sturrock's translation!)

Of the four Penguin Proust volumes I've read so far, this is my favorite--a wonderfully funny study of society (if not of sex). Proust specializes in transformations. We'll be introduced to a character and led to believe that we know everything of importance about him, only to have him turn up in a later volume as entirely different. In this volume, the remote and terrible Baron de Charlus is tranformed a pathetic tubby, besotted by the pianist Morel (himself a bit of a transformation, since he first appeared in the novel as the son of a valet).

Marcel (the narrator) meanwhile finds himself more deeply involved with Albertine, herself probably a stand-in for a male secretary of Proust's, Alfred Agostinelli. To complicate matters, I see elements of this relationship not only in the Marcel-Albertine affair, but also in the Charlus-Morel romance. It's as if Proust divided his experience into two parts, giving the romantic elements to Marcel and the comic part to Charlus.

The two romances come together at the seaside salon of the awful Madame Verdurin, who is inexorably rising in the world. In one of Proust's hundred-page setpieces, the aristocratic baron has his first clash with the social-climbing Verdurins. I found myself cheering for Charlus, whom I'd earlier learned to dislike, because he is so genuine and she is such a fraud. And I know in my heart (and through my earlier readings of this great novel) that things are not going to turn out well for Charlus. Against all logic, Proust in one of his hundred-page dissections of French society is able to keep me on tenterhooks.

The less said about Albertine, the better. I am not one of those who find her/him a convincing character. So it is with a bit of apprehension that I now turn to volume five of the Proust Penguin, containing the two books of the "Albertine cycle."

But back to Sodom (as it were): this is a wonderful translation of a riveting story. If you stick with "In Search of Lost Time" thus far, you will know that you are in the middle of one of the great experiences of your life.

Proust's Human Comedy

Some have accused Proust of being "long-winded." However, he suffered acutely from shortness of breath but not shortness of breadth. Proust preferred to work on a large canvas. Having read the first four volumes of "In Search of Lost Time," I am even more convinced that Proust is a literary talent of the highest order. He is a writer of immense sensibility in the true sense of the word. His perception and memory and intelligence permeate his writing. Like Balzac, whom he admired, Proust focused his sensibility upon high society in Paris in his heyday. He continually discoursed about the the manners of the circles in which he moved and sheds light, as did Balzac, on the complexities of the strata and protocol and behavior of his social peers. One is able to get a close look at this realm in which he was considered a literary luminary and rightly so, after winning France's greatest literary prize at such an early age. Like Balzac he built his volumes in a "serial" fashion by ending each in dramatic fashion: the characters reappear from volume to volume. And one learns about their health, their misfortunes, their affairs often through the hearsay of other characters, as it happens in real life. Despite the despicable ways that the characters often treat each other, Proust speaks within the tapestry of the "human comedy" as the humble voice of reason. "When you reach my age you will see that society is a paltry thing, and you will be sorry that you put so much importance to these trifles," a judge observes. But for Proust society was his life and his legacy is partly at least the light that he sheds upon his own human comedy. The beauty of the language is breathtaking --the language is utterly lyrical and once one surrenders to the pulse and flow of his long sentence syntax, one finds the transforming genius of his art. I am eager to begin Volume 5 -- the man is a bonafide genius. He deals with sensitive subjects in good taste and with sage discretion -- Proust communicates with his readers as he probably did in society: honestly, articulately and with the best of all manners. He didn't live long enough to read the publication of half the volumes of his greatest masterpiece: Volume 4 was the last he lived to see published. What an absolute pity!

"Obscure Deities," or the Dark Side of Love

In the previous volume of Proust's IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME, Marcel was poised at the pinnacle of social success as he readied himself to attend the Princesse de Guermantes' party. Those alabaster gates that from a distance appeared to be the entry to paradise actually opened only onto a continuing pageant of human folly. Early in the book, a chance peek out the window shows the elegant Baron de Charlus to be a pervert as he romances the servile Jupien.
Even his beloved Duchesse de Guermantes "allowed the azure light of her eyes to float in front of her, but vaguely, so as to avoid the people with whom she did not wish to enter into relations, whose presence she discerned from time to time like a menacing reef in the distance."
Marcel retreats from the social whirl and returns to Balbec, the scene of WITHIN A BUDDING GROVE. There he takes up again with Albertine and, after hobnobbing with the Guermantes, now joins Mme Verdurin's "little band" of opinionated second-raters. This was the same salon at which Swann had met Odette in SWANN'S WAY. You may recall that Swann discovered that Odette was multiply unfaithful to him, yet married her anyway.
In SODOM AND GOMORRAH, it is Marcel who is drawn ever closer to Albertine. As the book draws to a close, he discovers from a chance remark that Albertine claims close friendship with two lesbians one of whose trysts Marcel had witnessed years before in Combray. Just as Swann had agonized just before deciding to wed Odette, Marcel sees the death of his hopes and of any chance for joy in his young life.
"As by an electric current that gives us a shock, I have been shaken by my loves. I have lived them. I have felt them: never have I succeeded in seeing or thinking them. Indeed I am inclined to believe that in these relationships ..., beneath the outward appearance of the woman, it is to these invisible forces with which she is incidentally accompanied that we address ourselves as to obscure deities."
During this, my second reading of IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME, I continue to marvel at Proust's mastery. The scene of a social gathering that occupies two hundred pages, and takes me two or three days to read, seems to pass by in the blinking of an eye.

First Rate "Publisher" should include magnifying glass or warning label with its products

Anything published by First Rate Publishers is pure garbage. This copy does not contain the preface, and the pages aren't even numbered. The font, format, and size of the text are all conducive to some sort of epileptic episode and should come with a warning. I'm returning my copy. You're better off gouging your eyes out than funding this phony "publisher."

Very difficult to keep track of the characters. and there is much wordage describing scenery. The action moves very slowly, and i did not engage with the characters.
