Here First: Autobiographical Essays

Here First is an important new collection of essays by Native American writers compiled by Arnold Krupat and Brian Swann, the editors of I Tell You Now: Autobiographical Essays by Native American Writers. In Here First, authors such as Sherman Alexie, Greg Sarris, and Elizabeth Woody tell the stories of their lives and their art. Each essay demonstrates the breadth of experience of twenty-seven individuals united in the creative expression of a Native American heritage. Each has a different relation to that heritage, and in describing it through personal and family history, with verse and in anecdotes, the writers give a strong image of the different cultures that have shaped them. This is living history and the kind of collective memoir that makes for fascinating and rewarding reading--one of the most vivid and diverse portraits of Native American culture available today.

From Library Journal
This anthology of 26 essays is a follow-up to I Tell You Now (1978). The authors, born mostly in the 1940s or after, come from many different tribes. Some are full blood, others mixed; some were raised on a reservation, others weren't; and some are well known, others obscure. They are professors, artists, poets, novelists, playwrights, social workers, and more. Krupat (English, Sarah Lawrence Coll.) and Swann (English, Cooper Union) assert that the essays reflect not only how many different ways there are to be Indian today but also how many different ways there are to write about these experiences. After a misanthropic description of American life, W.S. Penn admits, "The problem is that I don't really hate America. I hate the fact that what I want America to do is like me." Rex Lee Jim declares, "When I realized that everything matters, I immediately knew that my destiny was completely in my control." Vickie Sears calls writing "a wind" and a "moving in dreamdance." Like the previous anthology, this collection is a mixed bag but still a valuable contribution to Native American studies and literary scholarship.DNancy P. Shires, East Carolina Univ., Greenville, NC

From Booklist
Growing up Native American is unlike any other experience, although questions of identity and the struggle to find a place in the dominant culture resonate meaningfully to readers from all backgrounds. As Rex Lee Jim, one of the 26 contemporary Native American writers who contributed autobiographical essays to this striking collection, writes, "It's somewhat funny to know that the very personal is also the most common and therefore universal." Like many others, he focuses on the power of language, in his case, a Navajo prayer taught to him by his grandfather. Betty Louise Bell writes that as a child she "trusted words" to save her from the hardships of her poor, semiliterate family. Sherman Alexie's ironic and athletically graceful essay is the most dynamic, but each self-portrait compellingly discloses a unique facet of Native American life and of literature, which preserves memory, makes sense out of suffering, and renders revelations poetic. Truly fantastic book!
By Margaret Smith
This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Each chapter is written by an author who shares some of his or her life with the reader - each from different tribes and nations. Not your typical "mystical, Lakota focused, written for a white audience" book. I purchased this book to help other non-Native people like myself understand and develop a broader awareness of the experience of literary Native America and it was well worth the time. I highly recommend this book. It's a great way to introduce yourself to new authors as well.

Complete Poems and Selected Letters of John Keats (Modern Library Classics), by John Keats

'I think I shall be among the English Poets after my death,' John Keats soberly prophesied in 1818 as he started writing the blankverse epic Hyperion. Today he endures as the archetypal Romantic genius who explored the limits of the imagination and celebrated the pleasures of the senses but suffered a tragic early death. Edmund Wilson counted him as 'one of the half dozen greatest English writers,' and T. S. Eliot has paid tribute to the Shakespearean quality of Keats's greatness. Indeed, his work has survived better than that of any of his contemporaries the devaluation of Romantic poetry that began early in this century. This Modern Library edition contains all of Keats's magnificent verse: 'Lamia,' 'Isabella,' and 'The Eve of St. Agnes'; his sonnets and odes; the allegorical romance Endymion; and the five-act poetic tragedy Otho the Great. Presented as well are the famous posthumous and fugitive poems, including the fragmentary 'The Eve of Saint Mark' and the great 'La Belle Dame sans Merci,' perhaps the most distinguished literary ballad in the language. 'No one else in English poetry, save Shakespeare, has in expression quite the fascinating felicity of Keats, his perception of loveliness,' said Matthew Arnold. 'In the faculty of naturalistic interpretation, in what we call natural magic, he ranks with Shakespeare.'

About the Author
John Keats was born in London in living quarters connected with his maternal grandfather's livery stable, the Swan and Hoop Inn, on October 31, 1795. He was the eldest of five children (one of whom died in infancy) begot by Thomas and Frances Jennings Keats. His father was the chief hostler at the Swan and Hoop, and the family prospered. The boy was eight years old when Thomas Keats was killed in a riding accident; the next year, in 1805, Keats's grandfather died. When the future poet was fourteen, his mother (after an unsuccessful remarriage) succumbed to tuberculosis. By then, however, Keats had received a liberal education at the progressive Clarke school, a private academy in the village of Enfield, twelve miles north of London, where for eight years he studied English literature, modern languages, and Latin. (He began translating Virgil's Aeneid while still at shcool.) Charles Cowden Clarke, the headmaster's son, remembered him as an outgoing youth who made friends easily and fought passionately in their defense. A fellow student recalled his pugnacious spirit: 'Keats was not in childhood attached to books. His penchant was for fighting. He would fight any one.' Yet George Keats spoke of his brother's 'nervous, morbid temperament' (perhaps attributable to a complex about being short—'poor little Johnny Keats' was barely five feet tall) and of his having 'many a bitter fit of hypochondriasm.' Indeed Keats himself wrote: 'My mind has been the most discontented and restless one that ever was put into a body too small for it.'

In 1811 Keats left the Clarke school to become a surgeon's apprentice—first at Thomas Hammond's apothecary shop in a small town near Enfield and later in London at Guy's Hospital. (Surgery would have been a respectable and reasonable calling for someone of Keats's means: unlike the profession of medicine, it did not require a university degree. Moreover, Keats always maintained he was 'ambitious of doing the world some good.') During his five years of study for a license, the young apprentice completed his translation of the Aeneid and 'devoured rather than read' Ovid's Metamorphoses, Milton's Paradise Lost, and other books he borrowed from the Clarke school. But the work that decisively awakened his love of poetry—indeed shocked him suddenly into self-awareness of his own powers of imagination—was Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene. At some point in 1814 Keats composed his first poem, 'In Imitation of Spenser.' Although he struck medical colleagues as an 'idle loafing fellow, always writing poetry,' Keats passed the apothecaries' examination that allowed him to practice surgery on July 25, 1816.

In the meantime, his poetic genius was being recognized and encouraged by early friends like Charles Cowden Clarke and J. H. Reynolds, and in October 1816 Clarke introduced him to Leigh Hunt, whose Examiner, the leading liberal magazine of the day, had recently published Keats's sonnet 'O Solitude.' Five months later, on March 3, 1817, Poems, his first volume of verse, appeared. Despite the high hopes of the Hunt circle, it was a failure. During the fall of that year, Keats stayed with Oxford student Benjamin Bailey at Magdalen College. While Bailey crammed for exams, Keats worked on Endymion, his four-thousand-line romantic allegory; the two read and discussed Wordsworth, Hazlitt, Milton, Dante, and Shakespeare. Back in London, on November 22, 1817, Keats wrote to Bailey the first of his famous letters to friends (and siblings) on aesthetics, the social role of poetry, and his own sense of poetic mission. Rarely has a poet left such a remarkable record of his thoughts on his own career and its relation to the history of poetry. (The letters also reveal the astonishing speed with which Keats matured as an artist.) Yet by the time Endymion was published in April 1818, Keats's name had been identified with Hunt's 'Cockney School,' and the Tory Blackwood's Magazine delivered a violent attack on Keats as an 'ignorant and unsettled pretender' to culture who had no right to aspire to poetry.

Although the critical reaction to Endymion was infamous for its ferocity, the youthful bard was hardly destroyed by it—despite Byron's famous quip that Keats was 'snuffed out by an Article.' The surprising truth is that he entered upon an interval of astonishing productivity, perhaps the most concentrated period of creativity any English poet has ever known. In the summer of 1818, Keats journeyed to Scotland with Charles Brown, the rugged, worldly businessman who was one of his most loyal friends. There he vowed: 'I shall learn poetry here and shall henceforth write more than ever.' That fall he began composing Hyperion, his imitation of and challenge to Milton's Paradise Lost; even critics saw the work as a major achievement. In December, following his brother Tom's death from tuberculosis, Keats went to live with Charles Brown in Wentworth Place, Hampstead. There, almost in spite of himself, the young poet fell helplessly in love with Fanny Brawne, the eighteen-year-old daughter of a widowed neighbor; a year later they were betrothed. In 1819 Keats produced 'The Eve of St. Agnes,' 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci,' the major odes, Lamia, the Dantean dream-vision The Fall of Hyperion, and the five-act verse tragedy Otho the Great (written in collaboration with Brown).

On February 3, 1820, Keats suffered a pulmonary hemorrhage that signaled an advanced stage of tuberculosis. He quickly broke off his engagement and began what he called a -posthumous existence.' His career as a poet was effectively ended, although the volume Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St. Agnes, and Other Poems, containing the bulk of Keats's claim to immortality, was published that July. In a desperate attempt to recover his health in a milder climate, Keats sailed for Italy in September accompanied by the painter Joseph Severn. Declining an invitation to stay with Shelley in Pisa, the two arrived in Rome on November 15 and took up residence in rooms overlooking the Piazza di Spagna. John Keats died in Rome on the night of February 23, 1821, and was buried there on February 26 in the Protestant Cemetery. On his deathbed Keats requested that his tombstone bear no name, only the words 'Here lies one whose name was writ in water.'

Incredible
By Mickey Callaghan
Pertaining to Keats himself, I could scarcely lavish enough praise upon his poetry. I must confess an extreme partiality to the High Romantics (Blake, Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Coleridge, etc.), and, among them, Keats vies with Wordsworth for the best verse.

Many of his poems are quite famous--if you have studied only a little poetry, you likely have passing familiarity with his great odes (especially the sublime "To Autumn," "To a Nightingale," and the wonderful, deep "On a Grecian Urn") or with his strangely dark "La Belle Dame sans Merci." If you have studied poetry and none of these poems even rings a bell, well... you have been missing out! Take this brief snippet of a stanza from his "Ode on a Grecian Urn":

"...
Thou, silent form, dost tease us out of thought
As doth eternity: Cold Pastoral!
When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st
`Beauty is truth, truth beauty, --that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.'"

The odes are not his only great poems, of course; I daresay almost every poem in this volume is invaluable. They are, however, his most famous lyrics, and for good reason!

Some, critic/poet T.S. Eliot, for example, detest the Romantics**. Eliotian criticism for the first half of last century dismissed them frequently, and tried to deny their lyrical power and the influence of Romanticism on all poetry thereafter. I will admit that among the Romantics, there are some who are often weak: Lord Byron, for example, ranges from marvelous to quite tawdry, and I can't say I'm an overly enthusiastic fan of Shelley. Keats, however, who lived only to be twenty-five, suffers none of the faults of his more fortunate contemporaries. He is deeper than any save Blake, and his only rival in lyrical beauty (an intentionally vague term...) I have yet read is Wordsworth.

Anyone who loves poems, who has a reverence for life and a wonder for its mysteries and sorrows, anyone who is enthralled with the power of a well-turned phrase or well-craft lyric; anyone of such a nature with fall in love with John Keats.

[**: I must note, upon reading the hidden appendix of criticism on Keats pointed out by the wonderful review above, that Eliot is not critical of Keats. Among the Romantics, he seems to regard Keats fairly highly; I know for a fact, however, that this is not the case with most other Romantic poets]

Excellent For College Study or Independent Reading
By Michael Wischmeyer
In his short life John Keats created some of the finest poetry in the English language. I have read his shorter poems and odes many times, not for study, but simply for enjoyment. I am not a Keats expert, but I can now easily recognize quotations from Keat's odes, sonnets, and other poems. I especially like "The Eve of St. Agnes", a story of romance and danger in a medieval setting that illustrates Keats' remarkable command of language.
Keats is not difficult, but footnotes help with archaic words and references to more obscure Greek mythology. I prefer to read Keats unaided, then read the footnotes (best if tucked away in an appendix), and then return and read the poem again. For longer poems I jump to footnotes more quickly.
Initially, the inexpensive Dover edition "Lyric Poems", was exactly what I needed. Later, as I tackled longer poetry like "Endymion", I migrated to more complete collections with commentary and footnotes.
Keats" works are widely available in hardcover and paperback. Which collection is best for college study or independent reading? I have two favorites, one by Penguin Classics and the other by Modern Library. Both are available in softcovers.
The first is "The Complete Poems" by Penguin Classics, edited by John Bernard and a standard choice for college classes. I have the second edition, 1977. Barnard's extensive footnotes and commentary are quite good and offset his somewhat brief introduction. Additionally, the appendix discusses textual variations in Keats' manuscripts and has a useful guide to Greek mythology names. The third edition, 1988, adds 20 pages of selected letters, Keats' notes on Milton's Paradise Lost, and his notes on a Shakespearean actor.
The second choice (my favorite) is the newly published "Complete Poems and Selected Letters of John Keats", Modern Library 2001 edition (not the earlier 1994 hardcover version). Apparently as a direct challenge to Penguin Classics, this edition offers a longer introduction (22 pages) by Edward Hirsch and excellent footnotes (not too many, nor too few) by John Pollock. Also, as the title implies, it has selected letters by Keats, some 25 pages in total. Somewhat hidden in the appendix is commentary by six well-known literary critics such as T. S. Eliot, Mathew Arnold, and Keats' biographer Walter Jackson Bate. Lastly, the font is larger and more crisp in the Modern Library version (but is still quite acceptable in the Penguin edition).
Overall, I prefer Hirsch to Barnard, but both are good choices. Both are 5-stars.

Best e-book of Keats' poetry available
By B. Allen
Many other free or cheaper versions of Keats have a poor or non-existent table of contents. This edition has a complete TOC, and includes all his poems as far as I can tell. A must-buy if you want a complete, well-formatted version of this genius' work.

In 1942, a dashing young man who liked nothing so much as a heated game of poker, a good bottle of scotch, and the company of a pretty girl hopped a merchant ship to England. He was Robert Capa, the brilliant and daring photojournalist, and Collier's magazine had put him on assignment to photograph the war raging in Europe. In these pages, Capa recounts his terrifying journey through the darkest battles of World War II and shares his memories of the men and women of the Allied forces who befriended, amused, and captivated him along the way. His photographs are masterpieces -- John G. Morris, Magnum Photos' first executive editor, called Capa "the century's greatest battlefield photographer" -- and his writing is by turns riotously funny and deeply moving.

From Sicily to London, Normandy to Algiers, Capa experienced some of the most trying conditions imaginable, yet his compassion and wit shine on every page of this book. Charming and profound, Slightly Out of Focus is a marvelous memoir told in words and pictures by an extraordinary man.

Review
"A powerful story nimbly told. For devotees of fine photography or accounts of World War II, the Modern Library 's reprinting is a welcome gift."
-- Tampa Tribune and Times

"Capa's work is itself the picture of a great heart and an overwhelming compassion. . . . He could photograph motion and gaiety and heartbreak. He could photograph thought. He captured a world."
-- John Steinbeck

"Above all--and this is what shows in his pictures--Capa, who spent so much energy on inventions for his own person, has deep, human sympathy for men and women trapped in reality."
-- John Hersey

From the Inside Flap

About the Author
Robert Capa was born in Budapest in 1913. At twenty-two he traveled to Spain to photograph the Spanish Civil War and soon established a reputation as one of the greatest war photojournalists in history. On May 25, 1954, in French Indochina, Capa was the first American photographer to die in what would become the Vietnam War.

Cornell Capa is Robert Capa's younger brother. A distinguished photojournalist, he founded the International Center of Photography in New York City in 1974.

War Stories With No Insights
By Alan B. Humphrey
The preface to the book points out that Capa originally wrote it with the intent of it being turned into a movie. The result is an engagingly good collection of war stories.
If, however, you're interested in finding out more about Capa, why, for example, he continually went back into harms way or why he let his relationship with Pinky languish so he could take more war pictures, or what he was trying to capture with his photographs, anything personal at all, you won't find it here.
Instead you'll find some well told war stories (although at times he tries too hard). You'll also be treated to a collection of his photographs. You just won't find the man here.

A Classic Story
By David A. Wend
This is a remarkable book by a great photographer. Robert Capa, as has been said, invented himself. This is evident in this book: as a Hungarian living the the United States during war time (technically an enemy alien) and broke, he managed to effortlessly have a job offered to him, get a passport (as if by magic) and become an American war photographer.
Mr. Capa wrote well for someone who learned English but his marvelous photographs included in this book say much more than the words on the printed page. Some of the photographs were familiar and others were new for me. They are touched with compassion and so involved with the scene as if the camera eye were able to explore the world invisible.
In sum, a wonderful book to read and treasure for Capa's outlook on life, his experiences and his unique photographs.

Amazon.com Review
Whether you want toned arms for your sleeveless gown or flat abs for your honeymoon bikini, certified trainer Sue Fleming can help you get in better shape for your wedding, even if you have only six months. This slim (106-page) book presents a six-month strength-training daily workout guide with cardio recommendations and a "crash program" if there’s only 12 weeks before the wedding. The strength-training exercises are basic, beginning workouts using dumbbells, stability ball, step, and ankle weights, all clearly explained and illustrated.

The cardio recommendations are very general--for instance, 75 minutes per week for weeks five and six, doing one or two activities that raise your heart rate for most of your workout, which should last at least 25 minutes. Sadly, Fleming runs through just a few ways (walking, running, and biking) to get aerobic exercise, but doesn't explore the huge array of cardio options or give much detail on this essential fitness component. Recommended for beginning exercisers who are committed to following a regular program and need specific strength-training exercises. --Joan Price

A Program That Actually Works!!!!
By A Customer
This book is great! I hate working out and am the type of person who avoids it at all costs. This book gave me no excuses. The program does not require a lot of space, nor does it require a large investment in time or pricey equipment to do these exercises. I could do the workout at my convenience in the privacy of my own home. Now who can find excuses with flexibility like that? The exercises were explained well and the book was very easy to follow. The workout switches up from week to week so it doesn't get boring. I LOVED the results I achieved, and the fact it didn't take forever to start noticing the improvement (another key element to keeping me motivated).
I received so many compliments from friends who said things like "I wish I had the arms to be able to wear a dress like that" and "You are so lucky to have a nice back so you can wear that style". Believe me, I looked like an over-stuffed sausage in that dress when I first tried it on. We all know how slimming white is anyway. It was my dream dress though, and thanks to this book I was able to look the way I should have looked in it. I can't say enough good things about the Buff Brides workout. My husband is quite happy with the results too. ;)

Buff Brides: an AWESOME workout that works!
By Casey M.
I have been using the Buff Brides 24-week workout program (there's a 12-week program, too) for 5 weeks now and I'm seeing a lot of results. I haven't changed my eating habits...too busy...but am still losing inches and toning up in places I've never toned up before. Especially my abs, butt, and arms. I highly recommend this program. I used to go to the gym, but had gotten lazy the past year or so. This program is great for beginners to those who already work out a lot, just want to work out at home. It takes very little equipment and space. It does take time. With 30 minutes of cardio added, the workout takes me a little over an hour and a half, 3 days a week. It moves to 4 days a week of strength training as you get closer to the 12-week mark. It's really motivating and I plan on looking great for my wedding!

Great tone-up for any woman
By Claire Todd
I am currently into my 5th week of following this program, and I am already seeing results! Being a little weakling, my goal was not to lose weight, but to replace some of my fat with muscle, and so far that is what is happening. It has proved to be the most rewarding type of work-out I've tried, reasonably enjoyable for someone who is exercise averse, and the only one I've stuck with for this long. I am getting married in May, but I would be appreciating this workout even without the motivation of a wedding. I feel good about doing something healthy for myself, can tell a difference in how I feel overall, and my fiance can even feel the muscles in my arms now!

This book has illustrated guides to different stretches and exercises, grouped by target muscles; the back contains a 24-week and a 12-week recommended schedule. It tells you week by week which exercise to do on which day, three days a week. I like that this program has recommended weights and number of reps for differing levels on all the exercises. I started the 24-week program at beginner level and have been moving towards intermediate. Because I will finish before my wedding, I may continue on with the 12-week at advanced level. The book also gives recommendations on how much additional cardiovascular excerise to be getting, but that's not a part of the program itself. (I have not been doing anything additional myself; perhaps I'd be losing weight if I was.) With the use of a set of stairs and sturdy coffee table, all I bought to start with was an exercise ball, plus 5- and 10-lb. pairs of weights. Ankle weights are recommended as well.

Accurate review book
By Ben
I took the math IIC test earlier today and the Princeton Review book was on target. The practice tests were very similar in difficulty level to the actual test itself, and the book's lessons and suggestions were very helpful as well as readable.

I also own the Barrons review book, and while that was good to practice the toughest questions, it is really nothing like the test itself. So I recommend the Princeton Review over the Barrons to anyone looking for a sufficient review of the material and accurate practice for the exam.

Worthless
By Uttaresh
This book is worthless for the Math Level 2. Doesn't cover everything in detail, doesn't explain most of the stuff - and the level is too easy.

I mean, why would anyone pay $20 for this? If you want a GOOD score on the IIC, get something like Barron's or the "15 Realistic Tests" one. I admit they're way more difficult than the actual test standard, but you'll need it if you want to get anything above 750 - which isn't that much in the Level 2, as more than 10% of the test takers get a perfect score of 800.

If you just want to see how much you get on a realistic SAT test, get the official SAT Subject Test Study Guide or the official SAT Math Study Guide, the CollegeBoard ones.

Too many errors for a 20 dollar book.
By L. Hansen
I'm giving this book two stars because the actual review material was amazing, and really helped me understand math.

However, this book has many errors. Most of the errors I remember were in the chapter with the answers to the drills and practice questions in tables. For example, for a couple of tables the page numbers the tables say they refer to are off. Another example, theres one spot where the answer in the answer column contradicts the answer the explanation says is correct. These kind of things drive me insane, and simply should not be in a book that costs twenty dollars. These errors are fixed by simple, simple proofreading.

I also bought Princeton Review's Chemistry subject test guide, and because of that other book I will never buy anything from this company again.

The Parrot Who Owns Me: The Story of a Relationship, by Joanna Burger

Seventeen years ago, when she adopted a neglected, orphaned thirty-year-old parrot named Tiko, the internationally renowned ornithologist Joanna Burger entered one of the most complex relationships of her life. Sullen and hostile when he entered Dr. Burger’s home, Tiko gradually warmed up, courting her during mating season, nursing her vigilantly through a bout with Lyme disease, and for a while even fighting her husband for her attentions. In time theirs was a relationship of deep mutual trust.

The Parrot Who Owns Me is Joanna and Tiko’s story, as well as the story of the science of birds, and of parrots in particular. Woven into the narrative are insights and fascinating revelations from Dr. Burger’s work—not only about parrots, but also about what it means to be human.

From Publishers Weekly
A woman and her parrot. It may not sound like much, but Burger manages to make the story of her relationship with her pet, Tiko, into one of the warmest, funniest and weirdest memoirs of the year. Burger (Twenty-Five Nature Spectacles in New Jersey, with Michael Gochfeld), a renowned ornithologist and professor of biology at Rutgers University, has lived for 15 years with Tiko, who now dominates almost every aspect of her life. He eats dinner off her plate. He takes showers with her. He wakes her every morning and trims her nails. The two have grown so close that they've even become (in Tiko's mind, at least) committed lovers. Every spring, Tiko shamelessly begins his courtship ritual: shredding newspaper for a nest, hoarding food and obsessively preening and kissing Burger. During these periods, Tiko is jealous in the extreme; if Burger shows her husband, Mike, any affection, Tiko will fly at him in a rage, nipping at his ears, even drawing blood. (By way of apology, Tiko will later join Mike in a whistling duet, often of baroque harpsichord music.) Burger anthropomorphizes Tiko: he can be happy, sad, angry, disappointed, bored. But this isn't mere pet-owner whimsy; Burger backs up every such characterization with hard science and decades of bird study in jungles, marshes and forests all over the world. Smart, precocious, fun-loving (he slides down the stair banister for kicks), Tiko provides ample evidence why parrots are the third most popular pets in the country (after cats and dogs). This book is a must-have for bird-lovers and a fun read for everyone else. (May)Forecast: This lively, intelligent book seems destined for longevity. Advertising in Bird Talk magazine should help introduce it to bird lovers, while a national publicity campaign should garner broader exposure.

From Library Journal
Tiko, a 35-year-old orphaned, Red Lored Amazon parrot, and Burger, a renowned ornithologist and Rutgers University biology professor, have lived together for 15 years. Burger describes their relationship with the charm and warmth of a true animal lover who delights in her companion animal's antics and intelligence. Her special gift to her readers, though, is the scientific acumen with which she analyzes and interprets Tiko's behavior. By correlating it to behaviors found in the wild, Burger, the author of several books on avian behavior and natural history (e.g., A Naturalist Along the Jersey Shore), sheds light on the actions that frustrate, frighten, anger, or puzzle pet bird owners. Interwoven throughout the story are Burger's observations, gleaned from months spent in the field recording bird behavior, the horrific practices of bird trappers, and her growing sense of the delicate balance of all life. Written with reverence for life and tenderness toward companion animals, this is a book to be cherished. Animal lovers will enjoy it, and if your library subscribes to Bird Fancy, it is essential. The writing is accessible to the public library reader, while the author's credentials and documentation make it a suitable purchase for academic libraries. Cleo Pappas, Lisle Lib. Dist., IL

From Booklist
Parrots are extremely intelligent, long-lived birds that mate monogamously and live in groups of close friends and relatives. Humans are extremely intelligent, long-lived mammals that (generally) mate monogamously and live in groups of close friends and relatives. These parallels both enliven and help explain the bond between humans and the parrots that own them and are exemplified in this new paean to the human-animal relationship. Burger is a behavioral ornithologist, widely published in scientific journals and steeped in the scientific method. She did not know how much her life would change when she and her husband adopted a 35-year-old parrot that had been tightly bonded with two recently deceased sisters in their eighties. Burger's story of the parrot's coming to life again when he joined her household and later became pair bonded with her (at which point Burger's husband became a supernumerary rival) makes for enchanting reading. "A Love Story"
By Joseph J. Hanssen
As I read this book I had to keep reminding myself that it's just "A Love Story" between Joanna Burger & her companion parrot, Tiko. This is not a book on how to bring up a companion parrot for the first time parrot parent. Some of the interaction between Tiko and Joanna goes against all behavioral advice that has been published before by behavioral parrot experts, and my own experience with companion parrots. You'll have to remember Joanna is doing scientific study and trying to let Tiko live as wild & free as possible within an enclosed household environment. Some of the things that Tiko is allowed to do could prove very fatal to a companion parrot. A companion parrot needs kind & loving discipline, and they do look to us as their parents in captivity for daily guidance and direction. If they don't have this, they end up very frustrated and confused, and stressed.
That being said, this is a wonderful story of the interaction and love between Tiko and Joanna. The experiences that Joanna had while on her many jungle trips to South America, etc, are captivating reading. I would love to read a detailed account of these scientific findings she experienced on these trips. This was a touching story, and I'm glad Dr. Burger shared it with us. If you are seeking expert advice on taking care of your new companion parrot be sure to check out the "Companion Parrot Handbook" by Sally Blanchard & her "Companion Parrot Quarterly" publication.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - so will you!
By A Google User
Joanna has written a clear, insightful, believable and touching story of her 15 year love affair with her Amazon parrot. Her great relationship with her husband is mentioned too - for those of you sentimentalists who prefer true romance and love stories. Her impressive blend of scientific research, humour, love of parrots and openess to other way of communicating with our loved ones of all species, makes this a great read. As a trained scientist, behaviorist, and vet technician, I appreciated the years of field research on different ornithological species that Joanna details throughout the book. As a professional Animal Communicator, I deeply appreciated Joanna's way of presenting this story that left the door open for the reader to wonder about the magic that happens between any two beings that love each other. The book is filled with wonder, true storytelling at its best, and is just a great read, especially for anyone who has ever known (or would like to know) a parrot. In case you haven't guessed - I loved the book!

Chocolate is TOXIC to birds
By Chezron
While I am enjoying the book so far, I am terribly upset with how the author fed chocolate to her bird.
CHOCOLATE IS TOXIC TO BIRDS! As an ornithologist she should have known that. It is also very irresponsible to write about it and have readers perhaps feed it to their birds too.
I can't tell you how awful this is that someone who supposedly cares about the health of her bird CHOOSES to fead it a poisonous substance. Totally reprehensible!

The Brother: The Untold Story of the Rosenberg Case, by Sam Roberts

Fifty years after their execution in June 1953 for conspiring to steal atomic secrets, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg remain the subjects of great emotional debate and acrimony. The man whose testimony almost single-handedly convicted them was Ethel Rosenberg’s own brother, David Greenglass. Though the Rosenbergs were executed, Greenglass served a mere ten years in prison, after which, with a new name, he disappeared. But journalist Sam Roberts found Greenglass, and then managed to convince him to talk about everything that had happened.
So here at last is the mesmerizing inside story of the Rosenberg case: What were their lives like growing up on the Lower East Side? How was David Greenglass enlisted in a plot to hand over to the Soviets our greatest national secret? And how, finally, did the whole thing unravel? Even beyond that, The Brother reveals how David Greenglass perjured himself in testifying about his sister and her husband—testimony that virtually strapped them into the electric chair.
The Brother is a great narrative, far more mesmerizing than anything else written on the subject. It is a story of espionage. It is the story of a trial. And, most tragically, it is the story of a family.

We may not care for what he did........
By Robert C. Hufford
.....but that doesn't change the truth of what he said. A virtual infinity of books have been written about the Rosenberg case, most by people having an agenda, one way or the other; this is one of the best, and most important...further, Sam Roberts does not have an agenda. I was only 6 when the Rosenbergs went to the chair, but I remember it well. I have never doubted their guilt; I have little doubt that my Dad would have pulled the switch. Numerous authors have proclaimed the Rosenbergs innocent victims of a government frame-up; these are often Communists, or at least leftists, who base their assertions on the belief that the principle prosecution witnesses, David and Ruth Greenglass, were lowlifes.

This fine book is the story of David Greenglass, brother of Ethel Rosenberg, atomic spy, soldier turned traitor, a man who turned government witness and "sent his sister to the chair". Many know the basic story...Ethel and David grew up in a poor family, and embraced Communism while young. Ethel married fellow Communist Julius Rosenberg, who strongly desired to aid the Soviet Union. During WWII, David was drafted into the Army, and worked in the machine shop at Los Alamos, where the atomic bomb was being developed...Julius found out about David's assignment, and recruited him to steal secrets for Russia...David passed the information to spy courier Harry Gold...after the war, the house of cards eventually fell...scientist Klaus Fuchs was caught...that led to Harry Gold...........

When arrested in 1950, David and his wife Ruth gave up Julius and Ethel; there was certainly no desire to "send them to the chair". They figured that the Rosenbergs would confess, as others had done, and the chain would go on. But, the Rosenbergs never confessed; apart from Morton Sobell, the rest of their spy ring remained free. They were tried, convicted, and, after a two year legal fight, executed. Sobell [who was not involved in atomic espionage] got 30 years, served 18 of them, and has never repented. Greenglass got 15 years, served 9, and disappeared behind an assumed name into a city somewhere in the northeast. He is now 85, and has expressed no regrets about being a government witness, still angry that the Rosenbergs got them into the mess. Ruth was never indicted......

There have been many charges of frame-up, and misconduct, on the part of the government. Certainly, there were improprieties; prosecutor Alexander Saypol wanted to be a Judge, and he was. Judge Irving Kaufman would have given his front seat in the Synagogue for the Supreme Court; despite a long, honored, career as an appeals judge, he never got it. But, none of this changes the Rosenbergs' guilt...in fact, the government had evidence it didn't dare use...the Venona intercepts implicated the Rosenbergs, and others, but use of them in open court would have let the Soviets know we had broken the code. The FBI even had an informant in Emmanuel Bloch's office while he was preparing the Rosenbergs' appeals...he gained even more evidence of guilt, but, of course, it couldn't be used.

We can debate capital punishment in general, and in this specific case, particularly for Ethel...like Mary Surratt, she was guilty, but peripherally. In fact, J. Edgar Hoover was strongly opposed to executing her. The Rosenbergs died by choice, giving their ultimate loyalty to a lie; on execution night, FBI agents were present to receive their confession, and President Eisenhower was at his desk with a commutation order.

The Rosenberg case has legal, political, psychological, military, philosophical, and religious, elements that will be debated forever. This book will give you a whole different view. Read it; also, read "The Rosenberg File" by Ronald Radosh and Joyce Milton. Radosh is a former Communist sympathizer who set out to prove the Rosenbergs' innocence, and got a big surprise. Also, "The Implosion Conspiracy" by Louis Nizer, another rare author with no agenda, is well worth your time.

Reserve A Space for This Book in Your Library
By Bill Emblom
Although I was only [...] when the Rosenberg's were executed on June 19, 1953, I do have vague recollections of their execution. The book is over 500 pages long but worth its length. Without going into lengthy details, as I understand the story, in 1945 Julius Rosenberg asked his sister-in-law, Ruth Greenglass, to suggest to her husband David, who was working on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, New Mexico, to provide details about the makings of the atomic bomb to be passed on to the Soviets. This David agreed to do since Russia had been an American ally during World War II. There appears to be some doubt as to what Ethel Rosenberg's role in this scheme was. Ethel apparently knew what her husband Julius was up to and was even agreeable to it. When her brother David was arrested, he agreed to cooperate with the government providing his wife would not be implicated. Instead David claimed that Ethel did the typing of his (David's) notes from Los Alamos. When author Sam Roberts interviewed David for the book David wavers as to who actually did the typing of his notes. He now states that it most likely was his wife Ruth. This apparently is where he is said to have sent his sister to the electric chair to save his wife Ruth. Would David have done this had he known a death sentence was facing his sister? From his interview with author Roberts I would have to say yes he would have although even though they were guilty they didn't deserve to die. One of the Rosenberg's two sons, Michael, is quoted as saying, "My mother went to the death house and Aunt Ruth goes home to make dinner." If you enjoy American history this is a book that you will want to make sure you have in your library. This is riveting American history.

The Tragedy of the Rosenbergs

Although over 50 years have lapsed since Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were electrocuted at New York's notorious Sing Sing prison just before Shabbat on 19 June 1953, their grim fate still inflames emotions today.

This racy account of family betrayal intertwined with political espionage by Sam Roberts of the New York Times, gives a fresh slant to the tragic story. As one of the 10,000 `spectators' at the funeral of the Rosenbergs, Roberts' interest in their case was rekindled in the 1980s when he decided to track down David Greenglass, Ethel's younger brother, whose crucial, though flawed, testimony in the Rosenberg trial helped send his sister and brother-in-law to the electric chair. In 1960, Greenglass had vanished from public view and adopted a pseudonym after serving ten years of a fifteen-year prison sentence for espionage. He was doggedly pursued by Roberts and ultimately agreed to discuss his version of events, not so much to set the record straight, but because, as he admitted, `I need the money'.

'The Brother' crackles along at a brisk pace describing the early family life of David Greenglass in Manhattan's politically radical Lower East Side, then his stint as an army technician at Los Alamos, New Mexico. This section of the book is overly detailed, and could have done with some tighter editing, but Roberts eventually shows how Greenglass came to be recruited as a spy by Julius Rosenberg, via David's wife, Ruth. It was here where David Greenglass supplied Julius with rough sketches of the implosion device used to trigger the atomic bomb.

It was not long before the FBI began investigating stolen uranium from the premises where Greenglass worked. It soon unearthed a web of espionage in which David Greenglass was heavily implicated. He panicked and quickly admitted to the FBI his role in spying for the Soviet Union. Greenglass' full confession was conditional, however, on Ruth not being indicted, even though Roberts shows she was more culpable than her sister-in-law, Ethel.

Coincidentally, the trial judge, Irving Kaufman, the prosecutor and chief defence lawyer were all Jewish (but none of the jury). This did not stop the government secretly enlisting the heads of major Jewish organisations to deflect potential allegations of anti-Semitism. Kaufman spared Greenglass because he showed deep remorse for his treachery, and agreed to confess, and name associates - most tellingly his sister and brother-in-law. But the pious judge showed no such mercy to Julius and Ethel, and seemed to share the hyperbolical sentiments of FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover, that the Rosenberg's actions were `the crime of the century'. (Roberts barely conceals his disdain for Kaufman who desperately wanted to put the Rosenberg saga behind him. Unfortunately for Kaufman, when he died, the Times Square electronic zipper proclaimed, `Rosenberg Judge Dies', and at his funeral service, a lone heckler at the back of the synagogue screamed, `He murdered the Rosenbergs. Let him rot in hell'.)

As if to underscore the gravity of Greenglass' explosive revelations, Roberts describes, in gut-churning detail, the build up to the Rosenbergs' execution, for example how their young sons, Robby and Michael, were wailing on the eve of the execution `one day to live, one day to live' and how Michael, incandescent with rage, vowed revenge against his uncle David. When a reunion was recently broached by Roberts between Greenglass and his nephews, Greenglass was game, but the Meeropol boys (their adopted name) pointedly refused, labelling Greenglass a `sleazy, despicable person'. The book contains some fascinating archival photos of all the key participants, including David and Ethel together in happier times, as well as a morbid, heart-rending picture of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, side-by-side in their coffins, with Julius wearing a kippah and draped in a tallith.

During the more than fifty hours of uncensored conversation (unknown to his wife) and in an earlier interview with America's Sixty Minutes II, David Greenglass dropped a bombshell - that he had committed perjury when he initially claimed that he witnessed Ethel typing his incriminating notes for Julius to pass to the Soviets - evidence that led to Ethel's arrest. Greenglass has since claimed he does not recall this event, arguing he was coached at the time by his wife, Ruth, to corroborate her story. (Apprehending Ethel is now generally regarded as a ploy to get Julius to crack, rather than because of her complicity.)

When confronted over his role in the disproportionately harsh punishment inflicted on his sister (and Julius), Greenglass was unrepentant. He maintained he never expected the death sentence to be handed down, let alone carried out, but also contended the Rosenbergs sealed their own fate through their `stupidity' - their naïve and dogmatic belief in communism, and stubborn refusal to cooperate with the government.

The Brother points to other ways the sad denouement could have been avoided - with a more impartial judge, by the US government tempering its zeal to prosecute with a little compassion, and yes, a contrite and less intractable stance from the Rosenbergs themselves, even if it meant the unravelling of what was undoubtedly an espionage-ring in New York (though the Kremlin never publicly conceded that Julius was a spy).

On the other hand, maybe the Rosenbergs were doomed from the outset, notwithstanding the damning testimony of David Greenglass. Afterall, the events so vividly portrayed in this book took place against a backdrop of the Korean War, hysterical anti-communism, McCarthy witch-hunts, and an intensifying Cold War. One can only hope in vain that governments today can rise to the occasion and deliver justice to all its citizens, irrespective of the political and social climate that is prevailing at the time.
