Novelist and military historian Carr (The Alienist, etc.) penned this brief history of terrorism as a corrective to the widespread perception spread by ill-informed journalists and politicians that the September 11 attacks were unique and unprecedented. Carr argues from the start that terrorism must be viewed in terms of "military history, rather than political science or sociology," and that the refusal to label terrorists as soldiers, rather than criminals, is a mistake. Underlying Carr's argument is the view that a repugnant bloodthirstiness arises when one civilization, no matter how advanced, encounters another. Accordingly, as Western civilization spread throughout the 17th and 18th centuries via imperialism, and Europe's seemingly more disciplined armies encountered strange peoples such as the Aztecs, Native Americans and south Asian Indians the wholesale slaughter of noncombatants became commonplace. No liberal, Carr zooms in on the history of the U.S. and looks at how terror tactics are fundamental to U.S. military efforts. Such tactics, he shows, were first established in the Civil War, culminated with the firebombing of Germany and Japan during WWII, and reappeared later during the Vietnam War. He traces the manner in which politicians and intellectuals have sought to justify and then curtail attacks on civilians throughout history. Only occasionally dry or repetitive, this often fascinating, accessible tome skillfully contends that the terrorizing of civilians has a long and controversial history but, as an inferior method, is prone to failure; it is rooted as much in human nature as it is in the need for military expediency. To ignore history is to repeat past mistakes. History professors proffer that piece of wisdom as the primary reason for studying history. Carr, author of the best-selling historical novels The Alienist (1994) and The Angel of Darkness (1997) and also a military historian, certainly supports that maxim in this beautifully articulated but sobering history of terrorism. Without a doubt, Carr's book needs to be read by as wide an audience as possible. Looking as far back as ancient Rome and bringing his analysis up to the present, he does not so much suggest as insist that terrorism is nothing new and that it is not a political or sociological issue. Terrorism, he argues, is as old as warfare itself, and, indeed, it is warfare, the kind of warfare "deliberately waged against civilians" to break the enemy's will. Further, Carr presents convincing evidence that terrorism has never succeeded in its purpose and that it cannot be fought successfully by repaying in kind or by refusing to recognize its military nature--we must see terrorists as the soldiers they really are. Why pay such close attention to correctly defining terrorism? Because "there have never been two more vital and powerful forces at work in the world than international capitalist democracy and fundamental Islam, nor two forces more capable of physical and cultural destruction." reminds me of thirty years past

This book begins by defining "international terrorism" (also called "destructive war" or "punitive war") as "warfare deliberately waged against civilians with the purpose of destroying their will to support either leaders or policies that the agents of such violence find objectionable." This book only makes sense if one temporarily accepts that definition. Although such a definition of the word "terrorism" at first seems quite removed from the events of 9/11, the author shows how that event fits into his definition. The book's principal thesis is that such violence is always spectacularly counter productive in the long run.
An important corollary is that terrorists should be treated as war opponents not as criminals, and their actions should be treated as acts of war not crimes. Rather than treating them on a par with smugglers drug traffickers or political mafiosi, we should treat them as (organized highly trained hugely destructive) paramilitaries.
In describing the development of and changes to war against civilians, the book romps through more than two millenia of military history. The necessarily rather sketchy stories in this brief book provide a fascinating and accessible broad brush introduction to military history.
My chief complaint with the book --especially the first part-- is that it it doesn't provide sufficient detailed arguments to support its thesis, perhaps because it so quickly covers so much ground. A reader with a good background in military history might receive the messages differently; what I found to be simply good stories might be a sort of shorthand that would bring forth the memory of many more details from the knowledgeable and provide much more support for the thesis.
The thing I liked most about the book is the very wide variety of blunt iconoclastic opinions that the author expresses: Karl von Clausewitz' book "On War" principally shows his admiration for the methods of Napoleon. Islam is notable for the ongoing internal contradiction between its pacifistic compassionate thread and its warlike aggressive thread. The behavior of the colonists during the American revolution was horrific, and was seen as such both by outsiders and by some residents. The African slave trade could not have happened without the locals' high level of intertribal warfare and their common custom of capturing and selling defeated civilians. And many many more.
The ideas in this books don't fit neatly into an existing category. It surprised me to find these two themes joined: treat terrorism militarily, and limit war's destructiveness by not using dirty methods even against a dirty enemy. While I don't necessarily agree with the ideas in this book, I found their presentation lively and provocative, and the prima facie case for them reasonable. Although this book is out of the mainstream of current thought, it's not on the lunatic fringe. It's not just controversial, it's a "mind stretcher."

A well-argued thesis

Carr argues, simply, that the tactics of terror never work. Where he gets controversial is identifying certain tactics used by the US in wars past as "terrorism." Whether you agree with that designation, his argument that targetting civilians always backfires is well-laid-out and persuasively argued.
The trouble, of course, is that I'm not a military historian and have no way of knowing if his argument is valid. If one argues that terrorism is *never* successful, all it takes to invalidate that argument is a single example of a successful terror attack. I have no idea if there are examples that are not mentioned in the book, but it seems to me that Carr is on somewhat shaky ground when he says that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were ultimately self-defeating.
He may be right -- there may have been ways to use the A-Bomb that would have been even more effective and not killed so many civilians, but it is hard to deny that the bombs had the desired effect -- Japan surrendered immediately. I would have liked him to go into this, and a few other examples, further. I still fail to see how, pragmatically speaking, the A-bomb attacks on Japan "failed to work." I understand completely the moral argument, that the attacks were morally repugnant, and probably unnecessary, but Carr argues in other parts of the book that one doesn't need to argue against terror on a moral basis -- that it simply doesn't ever work, and that's that.
Still, a completely thought-provoking book that caused me to re-evaluate my thinking on many issues. I don't know that it will change my mind, but it certainly is food for thought, and a good read.

Timely Book Uses History to Dissect the Future of Security

This is a timely book that is well written in the main. It is somewhat marred by the author's absolutism in arguing his main thesis that warfare against civilians (terrorism) is always a losing strategy for the perpetrators. His secondary thesis is that surgical, preemptive strikes have been consistently the most effective way of eliminating terrorist threats (all the more interesting since Carr wrote this book before the Iraq War).
Caleb Carr looks at history from Roman times to the current Arab-Israeli conflict to argue that terrorism always loses. Terrorism, or attacks on civilians, differs from guerilla warfare in that guerillas use their irregular forces and tactics to target opposing/occupying military personnel and targets. Terrorists just kill and maim wantonly, under the mistaken belief that carnage and death will force change or lead the terrorists to their goals. The historic evidence is otherwise. Terrorism almost always hardens the hearts and steels the minds of both targets and local populations against the perpetrators and frequently begets terrorism as a response.
Carr's examples are many. The Romans struck not the military might of the German tribes across the Rhine, but the villages and peoples thereof. German tribes became ferocious opponents and were the ones who ended up sacking Rome. Michael Collins was on his way to winning independence for all of Ireland. His turn to terrorism stiffened British resolve (leading one British prime minister to state he would not conclude a deal with the IRA because he "would not shake hands with murder.") and undercut his local support. Palestinian terrorism has not shaken the resolve of Israel; it has produced hard line Israeli governments less likely to negotiate Palestinian autonomy or statehood. These are a few of the historic examples Carr cites in support of his argument.
While I think he is generally right, he mars his well argued position by stating that warring against civilians and non-military targets always loses. Certainly the American Indian experience shows that wars of annihilation can sometimes (obviously) reduce an opponent to absolute subjugation for the long-term. And while Rome was sacked by the descendants of tribesman who sufferings were legion along the Rhine, several hundred years elapsed from then until Rome's fall. Also, General Sherman's romp through Georgia is referred to several times, but America healed fairly well and fairly quickly after the Civil War.
Nevertheless, the author's failed attempt to prove his observation correct in every case does not mar this book's demonstration that his thesis stands up well in most cases. On the contrary, the evidence marshaled by Carr is persuasive and the conclusion convincing.
Carr also shows what has worked historically in dealing with perpetrators of terrorism. Preemptive war, surgical strikes, leadership strikes have all proven the most consistently successful means to deal with history's bad actors. The reason is simple. Responding to terrorism with terrorism creates nations of opponents among people who generally want to live in peace and are probably suffering under their terrorist leader, warlord, or ruthless tyrant and would like nothing more than to see that person removed. As Jefferson showed in dismantling the Barbary pirates (at least as a threat against American interests) and President Bush has just shown against Saddam, the surgical strike first articulated by Frederick the Great removes the problem by attacking leadership and military interests without killing so many civilians that a nation of revenge seekers is created.
Failing to act preemptively begets larger threats over time. The suffering nation is perceived as weak (terrorists and tyrants look to prey on the weak) and the threat grows. The recent evidence of this progression can be seen in the mid to late 1990's as American embassies, interests, and the USS Cole were progressively attacked by Islamic terrorists who came to believe that America's only response to such outrages would be a few cruise missiles thrown against desert encampments. As unseemly as preemptive war seems to Americans, it is certainly better than the alternative of massive casualties inflicted upon us by those who come to believe they can act with impunity because we are not willing to persecute these threats until they are eliminated.
This is an interesting and persuasive book that should be read by every member of Congress as well as all that want to know how to best protect America in this age of terrorism.

That his vehicle is a flawed, flamboyant mayor makes it a colorful story in its own right, in which a good-government politician degenerates into graft with interludes in talk radio and, currently, jail. Vincent Cianci, known as "Buddy" around town, reveled in mayoral power, rewarding and punishing and positioning Providence as a city for concertgoers and tourists. Over time, the construction and rehabbing prompted complaints of corruption, and Stanton, an observer of Buddy from the offices of the Providence Journal, here checks out the allegations in the course of reviewing Buddy's career from the early 1970s onward. The beloved Prince

The author has accurately focused on one aspect of the cesspool that is political Rhode Island. Sure, there is corruption elsewhere: New York, Louisiana, Massachusetts...but the city-state of Providence and its limelight-hogging former mayor exemplify the saying that "people get the government they deserve," and is more accessible and fun to read about.
The author concentrates on Vincent "Buddy" Cianci and his coterie of Providence lowlifes. He barely mentions that the whole state is for sale, not just Providence. He gives a linear biography of the Mayor, then gets lost in details about the lower-level goings on that fed the mayor's purse and extravagant life style.
The book reads to me like a collection of chapters that may have been published elsewhere singly, then knitted together, but with the seams showing. He repeats information in separate chapters. He re-explains. He writes paragraphs with no point. He seems wistful that, with Buddy in the jug, the "Providence Renaissance" will lose its heart and falter.
He could have won some applause from me if he had told more of the part the Providence Journal plays in providing what little integrity exists in Rhode Island. That old-line Yankee WASP paper (at least until recently) is responsible for every exposure of corruption and drive for clean government in the state.
In spite of his authorly flaws, his information is bang on, and he sticks with it relentlessly until the poignant Runyanesque end, when he makes us sorry to see this alleged sociopath go off to receive his slap on the wrist in a Federal prison.
I'd still recommend the book. It's worth wading through.

The Jekyll and Hyde Mayor

I know very little about New England or Rhode Island. I'm not terribly interested in politics. I came to this book in a roundabout way. I had never been aware of Buddy Cianci until I happened to see a musical at the New York International Fringe Theatre Festival in 2003 titled BUDDY CIANCI. While the musical wasn't very good, I thought the story was fascinating and that in Buddy Cianci the authors certainly had a character who was big enough to sing. Here was a guy who was a scary crook that everyone loved. Here was a mayor whose popularity was never higher than just after he was indicted a second time. He had been indicted previously, pleaded guilty to assault (he bound and tortured a man he claimed was his ex-wife's lover) and had to step down as mayor, only to run again and be re-elected! So of course I pounced when I saw this book in the bookstore. I was not disappointed. Mike Stanton's THE PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE is jaw-dropping reading as it traces Cianci's rise to power and his outrageous machinations to keep his power. Stanton's book is very detailed and objective. This is not a hatchet job. He gives equal time to all sides. In one chapter I would be rooting for Buddy and in the following chapter rooting for his enemies. This is that kind of book. Buddy Cianci is that kind of guy. The book has been sold to the movies and should make a terrific film. (But what actor could possibly do justice to the title character?) There are times when the book seems on the verge of becoming a Yankee MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL (which I consider a compliment). THE PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE is consistently entertaining and has a lot to say about America and the times we live in. Four stars.

corruption as entertainment

Usually, municipal corruption is infuriating. But the Buddy Cianci story is highly entertaining, often comical. I was not surprised at all to learn that the book had been optioned for a movie even prior to publication. Unlike other reviewers, I was not familiar at all with Buddy Cianci or Providence or its reputation for mob infestation and deep-seated corruption. "The Prince" held me in thrall for all 400 pages as revelation upon revelation of kickbacks, bribery, intimidation and general malfeasance unfolded.
I would recommend this book highly to the most general audience. However, one caveat: it's mostly a book about crime and punishment, not politics. Personally, I would have liked to have learned more about Cianci's failed 1980 gubernatorial campaign. On one page, it appears that Buddy will win by acclamation; on the next, with little explanation, he's a landslide loser, failing to carry one city or even a single hometown ward. Having said that, "The Prince" is still first rate for its pure entertainment value. Definitely five stars.

I first met John Graves in 1981 at a Texas Writers' Convention in Ft. Worth. I told him that I'd bought at least 30 copies of Goodbye (which was true), having lent or given outright some 29 previous copies. He autographed it, and wrote a prelogue thanking me for my good opinion of the book. Read it for yourself, and enjoy Texas history and the mind of a man who is attached to every feeder creek, low water crossing, or sweeping bend. This book is what the best and worst of Texas is all about. Read it, then come on down to the River, and catch some fish. I'll set you up with a canoe rental ...

John Graves Captures Sentiments of a Place in Time

John Graves says goodbye to the Brazos River that he knew as a child and young man, growing up in West Texas before the river was dammed and life changed forever on the Brazos. This is one of the iconic Texas books that every Texas student should read to remember what life was like before the changes that occurred in that part of Texas.

What now exists there is a marvel of man's inventiveness, but I would imagine that to those who knew the Brazos before it was dammed, it is a sad remembrance of a life that no longer exists.

A piece of Texas to carry with you

I carried a copy of this book with me while away from Texas, while in the US Army back in '71. Every time I would get terribly lonely for home and Texas, I would read this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, Texas, nature, or rivers. I own several copies (five last count, as have given away half a dozen to good friends), and continue to re-read the book, as I always enjoy Mr. Graves' words, his history lessons, and his use of the English language. His imparting of the north Texas dialect is wonderful, as that dialect is the one in which I also was and am immersed. I have many other of Mr. Graves books, but GTAR is the first you should read! By the way, I also went to Boy Scout Camp at Worth Ranch on the Brazos as many boys did during the mid 50s, boated and canoed and fished on the Brazos, or the Brazos de Dios, the Arms of God. The sweet smell of oak and cedar, of campfires on river islands, the sounds of water rushing down river, the taste of fresh catfish fried up in a campfire...the bald eagles and deer, the ghosts of "The People" and early settlers....the best times....

I know of no other author who has a command of the written language like Mr. Graves, he paints pictures with words. His writing is kind of a combination of Ed Abbey, Ben K. Green, A.C. Greene, and Elmer Kelton, mixed in with a modern Thoreau.

Walter Payton's premature passing forced a rethinking of his autobiography that completely sidesteps the self-importance that dominates sports memoirs in general. Never Die Easy isn't a traditional autobiography at all. It's an oral history disguised as autobiography that relates the saga of the most exquisite running back in NFL history through an interweaving of Payton's words and the words of those who knew him, with necessary transitions and narrative bridged by his collaborator. The result is an appealing hybrid that mirrors Payton's quiet modesty. "He had not just been a great football player," writes Yaeger, "he had been a role model in an age when role models were in short supply."

The Payton that emerges is a man of great skill, decency, passion, and charity: a man beloved. Naturally, there's lots of football in Never Die Easy--the title comes from a saying of Payton's college coach--with eyewitness testimony provided by the likes of Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary, Jim McMahon, Franco Harris, Matt Suhey, and even Jim Brown, whose career rushing record Payton leaped over. But there is also lots of family: the voices of his wife, children, brother, and sister are heard.

It's a testament to Payton's greatness as a man that nearly half his autobiography can be devoted to what he achieved after his career. "Sweetness" may hold the NFL's career rushing record, and he may have been one of the toughest, hardest-working players ever, but he was also devoted to keeping spirits high around him, even when facing the end of his own life, and committed to helping needy children. He was so important to others that many immediately took up the latter task when he was dyingAand tens of thousands more sent him their prayers and sympathy. (Payton died of liver cancer in November 1999.) With a protagonist like this, Payton's book isn't your standard sports bio. Nor is it traditional in structure. Because Payton died before his autobiography was completed, his interviews have been supplemented by the stories and thoughts of family and friends, with sports biographer Yaeger providing the connective tissue. More an oral history than an autobiography, the book sometimes suffers for it. Payton's career is dealt with summarily; frequently, stories are repeated, if from different perspectives, and Payton's many remarkable qualities are each noted many times over. The five eulogies from his funeral all elaborate on the same points: his skills and his humility. Payton had an abundance of each. (Sept.)

The book chronicles his days at Jackson State University, his pro career with the NFL's Chicago Bears, and his death on November 1, 1999 from lung cancer. Like many, Walter Payton was my hero when I was a kid and, like many, it broke my heart when I heard of Walter's death. I was so heartbroken, in fact, that I could not even bring myself to read this book when it was first published. It sat ignored on my bookshelf for months. When I finally picked it up, it was almost everything I had hoped for. Walter wasn't perfect, but he strived to be the best person he could and, really, that's all you can expect from anyone. This book confirms that fact.
The book attempts to cover every aspect of Walter's short but full life: his humble but proud upbringing in Mississippi, his dazzling college and pro career, his (premature) retirement, his up-and-down business investments (including a failed bid to own an NFL franchise), his ambitious (and often anonymous) charity work, his illness, and his untimely passing. Since Walter could not finish the book, Don Yaeger supplements Walter's interviews with comments from those who knew him best. Unfortunately, this means some sections are thinner than they probably would have been had Walter been able to give us his full story. But, in some ways, it is more effective than a first person narrative would have been as we see Walter not only as he saw himself, but also as others saw him. Really, it's the best Yaeger could do.
This is NOT a book about football. While I do wish the book spent a little more time on Walter's football career, I realize this book was meant to be about Walter Payton the man, not Walter Payton the football hero. After all, football alone did not define Walter Payton. In many ways, this is Walter's last plea. Be humble. Be grateful. Work hard. Love each other. Never give up. Never die easy. Maybe the book isn't perfect, but it's a beautiful message, isn't it?

Grade 1-3-Junie B. is excited because she has a brand-new lunch box. She can't resist sneaking peeks in it during class and is caught by her teacher. The child instigates a discussion about why brought lunches are better than bought lunches and sums it all up by saying, "'Cause brought lunches are made special by our very own mothers!" Later that day at lunch, she sees a cafeteria worker who used to bring milk and cookies to Junie B.'s kindergarten class, and asks why her class doesn't get them this year. The woman explains that first graders get cookies when they buy their lunch. Junie B. convinces Mrs. Gutzman to let her be a helper in the cafeteria where she thinks that she'll be the boss and get to eat as many cookies as she wants. This cleverly written beginning chapter book is as funny as ever and young readers will laugh with the child as she learns that working in a cafeteria isn't just about eating cookies. A few black-and-white drawings in each chapter capture the confident little girl and her many adventures.

Barbara Park at it again!

Again, I read another Junie B. book to my four year old and she loved it. She just loves the way that Junie B. sometimes talks like she does. Of course Junie B. is up to her pranks again in Boss of Lunch. The book starts out in her wonderful journal that we all have already grown to love. Her spelling is so cute and fun to decipher. Junie B. is so excited just like she usually is, she has gotten a new lunch box and just can not keep her hands off of it. May, the "tattletale girl" tells on her everytime that she even looks at or heaven forbid touches it. This new lunchbox leads into a class discussion of if brought lunches are better than bought lunches. As the story develops Junie B. decides that maybe bought lunches are better than brought lunches but only because of what they were having in the cafeteria that day. The lunch lady learns of Junie B.'s disappoint and gives her a special job the next day at school. You'll have to read the book to see what a mess Junie B. makes of her special job. I did not say it at the beginning but I will now. Yes, I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone. It is just as good as all the other Junie B. books. I am truly enjoying watching Junie B. grow up. I am twenty seven years old and because I work with children and have my own I can really relate to Junie B. a lot of the time. She is great. Keep it up, Ms. Park.

About the Author
George Roberto Pace is a native Spanish speaker who moved to New York City at the age of two months, where he grew up and attended Hunter College High School.  He received his B.A. from Oberlin College in 1988, and he currently resides in Chicago, where he is Director of the Princeton Review of the Great Plains.

Bill Ennist is the Assistant Director of College Counseling and a Spanish instructor at Rye Country Day School in Rye, NY, where he has worked since 1993.  He received his B.A. in Economics/Spanish from Union College, and an M.A. in Spanish Literature from Yale University.  He lives in Connecticut with his wife and two children.

If you don't want a thorough review of Spanish...

I found this book to be succint and easy to comprehend, but it left out some important grammar and vocabulary topics. In fact, the majority of the book was composed of practice tests, which were way too easy. When I took their tests, I "scored" a 760. However, when it came to the actual test, I got a 640. It was pretty disappointing, especially since I've had four years of Spanish. I reccomend Barron's book. I bought it to study for a retake and found it to be much more complete. It helped me to get a 760, but this time for real.

In clear, workmanlike prose, veteran Washington Post reporter Harris traces the emotional highs and lows of a presidency with an excess of both. The book takes off after the disastrous (for Democrats) midterm elections of 1994, in part because of the arrival on-scene of a volatile Newt Gingrich and consultant Dick Morris, who is portrayed as quite sleazy. As the political wars over Whitewater and Lewinsky heat up, Harris's behind-the-scenes reporting pays dividends: he finds Gingrich boasting to Clinton, "Mr. President, we are going to run you out of town" and Clinton angrily denouncing the 1998 impeachment attempt as "a fucking coup d'état!" to a blank-faced, unsympathetic Al Gore. According to Harris, "the stereotype of Clinton as a supremely guileful and deceptive politician was essentially wrong." Instead, he views Clinton as an insecure, needy man whose frequent shifts in direction and self-destructive behavior reflected not cunning but utter lack of self-control. He also sees Clinton as growing in strength, self-confidence and wisdom over his eight years in office, and praises his courage in responding to the humanitarian crisis in Kosovo. First drafts of history are only as good as their informants; those interviewed here are thoughtfully candid and often anonymous. ("The closer people were to Clinton," Harris claims, "the more voluble they were as sources.") The product is neither a redemption nor a denunciation but a more measured portrait, and one that complicates the popular narrative of squandered opportunity. Clinton emerges as a gifted President, but one whose tendencies toward passivity and procrastination meant that he maneuvered best from an adversarial crouch. "One irony of this tension, as it played out over eight years, is that Clinton in the end proved to be a more effective and more consequential president during those times when he was disciplined by political caution," Harris concludes. "Many of his largest achievements," from balancing the budget to overhauling welfare, "had a defensive character."

The Politics Of The 1990's

The reader could fill a bookcase with all the literature written about Bill and Hillary Clinton. Starting with their respective autobiographies -- "My Life" (2004) and "Living History" (2003) -- and adding "The Clinton Wars" by Sidney Blumenthal (2003), "The Hunting Of The President" by Conason & Lyons (2000) and "Clinton: The President They Deserve" (1996) among others, the reader is faced with books that tend to be either praising or condemning the Clintons.

John Harris has written one of the few even-handed approaches toward Bill Clinton. Covering the politics of the 1990's for the Washington Post, he portrays Bill Clinton as a brilliant, undisciplined President who could could have been so much more. He describes his successes (Kosovo and welfare reform) and his failures (health care reform and the impeachment process). His greatest success may have have been outlasting his numerous enemies (hence the title of this book).

Mr. Harris has uncovered little original research about Clinton's Presidency but he synthesises all that has been published into a readable, coherent and balanced look at the man and his personal/political choices while in office. Mr. Clinton comes off as a tragic figure whose ambitious policy agenda came unravelled through his own hubris and the determined oppositon of Congressional Republicans. If there is one book that the reader wants to consult about the domestic and foreign policies of the prior decade, this is that book.

A hard (but not harsh) look at Bill Clinton

Ever since Bill Clinton appeared on the national stage people, whether they liked him or not found him fascinating. It is my perception that many Democrats bemoaning the loss of the past two presidential elections look back on the Clinton presidency wistfully while the former president's detractors, while still keeping a third eye out for the possibility of another Clinton in the White House, can't stop themselves from keeping up with Bill as if they were rubber necking a bad car accident. Love him or hate him (I don't know many that felt luke warm about him) people were and continue to be mesmerized by him. It is my prediction that generations will continue this peculiar love affair.

Books have come out about him that are distinctly for and against - obviously mindful of the power he still wields and the possibility that the man may someday be "first gentleman".

This book however is slightly different in that respect. Although I do not think the book is completely objective the author strives to be objective and it shows. Given the obvious power of the personality of Bill Clinton as well as the various controversies that swirled about him we are a little too close in time for anyone to be completely objective. Never the less seems to be the closest thing we have yet to a picture of what the
Clinton White House was really like.

I will reiterate that I do believe the author does his best to be objective. I think the best way to describe the author's ultimate view of Clinton is that he strongly ambivalent about the man. The way the political situation is currently in this country this book leaves enough open as far as the perception of the character of William Jefferson Clinton that it will be very much like a type of ink blot test of the reader. For although Clinton is not always shown in the best light here and some of the revelations in this book will be decried by Clinton supporters I believe both supporters and detractors will feel as they will have come away from this book with more ammunition.

Harris shows a man more aware of the threat of terrorism than the public knew as well as someone who was a true believer in the policies he tried to enact.
But the author also portrays a president continually under siege and due to this finds himself unable to act as effectively as he could or would like. Depending on what party you belong to some would call his actions prudent and understandable and that he was undermined by his enemies whereas others will see him as a man that did not have the backbone to act on what he saw was the right course of action. In short Harris finds Clinton not so much of a schemer as someone hampered by his insecurities and whose seeming indesciveness, and what some have characterized as slipperiness, was based on insecurity. And although the author shows the Clinton White House to be purposely evasive he presents the tactic as perhaps being well warranted. Clinton is shown as well as some who although possessing a flexible mind was not always flexible in his management style and this quality proved to be a double edged sword. Harris also gives a picture of a man that is bright but undisciplined perhasaps to the point of being self-sabotaging. But the author also shows Clinton as someone who showed personal growth during his eight years in the White House and who became more confident is his decision making.

In The Survivor we see the highs and lows of the Clinton presidency and it gives us some insights in to the mechanics of the Clinton White House that frankly Clinton's autobiography lacked.

A no nonsense clear-headed and aptly titled biography.

A WELL WRITTEN OVERVIEW

I am somewhat apolitical for the most part..more interested in history than in ideology. I approach books such as this with caution. First and foremost, I do not feel that a serious analysis can be written of any event until quite a number of years have passed and we can see what the results of a particular person or event had over the long haul. Secondly, I absolutely have no use for "hate" biographies or biographies written by authors who have some sort of personal or political axe to grind. That is simple bad scholarship and goodness knows we have enough of that crap lurking around us. That being said, I must admit to have been very pleasantly surprised with this offering. I felt the author did a very good job of giving us a ballanced view of the Clinton years in power. Now, this book, as others have so well pointed out, is not a deep book, it is rather, a primer and should be read as such. Over the next 20 years or so I have no doubt that some wonderful works will be written on the Clinton's and the Clinton years. This work is a good start. It gives a good ballanced overview and is a wonderful starting place. I gets you ready for what I am sure will come. You will be disappointed if you are looking for a juicy gossipy read or a Bill and Hilary basher. The author is quite good about giving both sides of each issue, both personal and politically. He examins both the dark side and the light (such as we know of it today). Recommend you read this one, but do recommend you not stop with this one.
