Morningside Heights: A Novel, by Cheryl Mendelson

Following the tremendous success of her first book, a nonfiction work on housekeeping that became a surprise bestseller, Cheryl Mendelson brings to her debut novel the same intensely readable style that made Home Comforts so popular. In the spirit of Anthony Trollope, she roots her story very much in a specific time and place—1999, in an old-fashioned New York City neighborhood that’s becoming rapidly gentrified—and the enormously engaging result resembles a twentieth-century version of The Way We Live Now.

Anne and Charles Braithwaite have spent their entire married life in a sedate old apartment building in Morningside Heights, a northern Manhattan neighborhood filled with intellectual, artistic souls like themselves, who thrive on the area’s abundant parks, cultural offferings, and reasonably priced real estate. The Braithwaites, musicians with several young children, are at the core of a circle of friends who make their living as writers, psychiatrists, and professors. But as the novel opens, their comfortable life is being threatened as a buoyant economy sends newly rich Wall Street types scurrying northward in search of good investments and more space. At the same time, the Braithwaites weather the difficult love lives of their friends, and all of the characters confront their fears that the institutions and social values that have until now provided them with meaning and stability—science, religion, the arts—are in increasing decline. Though the group clings to the rituals and promises of such institutions, the Braithwaites’ imminent departure sends shock waves through their community. As the family contemplates the impossible—a move to the suburbs—their predicament represents the end of a cultured kind of city life that middle-class families can no longer afford.

This intelligent and captivating social chronicle is the first of a trilogy of novels about Morningside Heights; readers sure to be drawn in by Mendelson’s habit-forming prose have much more to look forward to.

From Publishers Weekly
The busy, intersecting lives of a group of Manhattanites living in the staid but rapidly changing Upper West Side neighborhood of Morningside Heights near Columbia University are the focus of this talky, occasionally stilted debut novel by Mendelson (Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House). Opera singer Charles Braithwaite; his wife, Anne, a pianist; and their three (soon to be four) children are the novel's ostensible protagonists. The book's real hero, however, is their beloved neighborhood, which they fear they will soon have to leave, unable to afford their cramped apartment. They are surrounded by a large cast of the sort of people commonly found on Manhattan's Upper West Side-independent scholars, professors, eccentric neighbors, with rich stockbrokers invading the haunts of the original residents. Narrative drama, such as it is, is provided by the death of an elderly resident of the Braithwaite's building. What were the true circumstances of her death, what role was played by her shifty trustee-and most importantly, who will get her apartment? The incorporation of neighborhood history and description is sometimes a bit stiff, and Mendelson's tone can be stuffy-as befits her subjects-but the accumulation of day-to-day detail, social commentary and emotional insight eventually yields a consistent picture of a rarefied milieu.

From Booklist
In the first entry in a projected trilogy set in the Manhattan neighborhood of Morningside Heights, first-novelist Mendelson homes in on a charmed and charming circle of friends with the zeal of an anthropologist. For the first time in their placid marriage, the Braithwaites are experiencing serious tension. The overambitious gentrification plans of their co-op's new board of directors and the impending birth of their fourth child have pushed the couple's precarious finances past the breaking point. Charles, an opera singer, and Anne, who has turned domesticity into a deeply creative act, must now seriously consider a dreaded move to the suburbs. In addition, they are concerned about their best friends, a brilliant but lonely scientist and an acclaimed writer still reeling from yet another disastrous relationship. Readers will find it hard to resist Mendelson's radiant optimism, for she creates a world in which people naturally find and follow the arc of their true talents, lovers' defenses miraculously melt away, and decency and compassion are richly rewarded. This is one seductive novel. Joanne Wilkinson

Life Among the Intellectuals
By Wendy Kaplan
This such an unusual book, that I'm not sure how to categorize it, except to say that it is an extremely subtle, highly enjoyable, satirical view of the Upper West Side of New York City, where opera singers and scientists mingle with shrinks and Hispanic doormen.
Anne and Charles are one such couple: He, an under-rated opera singer, has a studio at home in their rent-controlled Morningside Heights apartment; she, a former concert accompaniest, takes care of their three children while taking her microcosm of the world very seriously indeed. She thinks nothing of purchasing a thousand-dollar violin for her 3-year-old, but dresses her daughters in hand-me-downs to save money; she serves truffles and caviar at her dinner parties, but refuses to take a cab. One should hate such people, but the very subtle way in which each is portrayed makes the reader (at least this reader) love them instead.
Then there is Merritt, an internationally known writer who can't keep a man to save her life, and Morris, a curmudgeonly scientist who thinks it might be time to get married. Both dear friends of Anne and Charles, they hate each other mightily, but can't seem to find anybody else they like better.
Add to the mix a very odd and hilarious assortment of highbrow intellectuals who take themselves oh-so-seriously, and you have a modern-day comedy of manners that reminds one of Henry James.
I loved this book. It's not for everybody, but I found it refreshingly different and look forward to the next by this interesting author!

Yes and no on Morningside Heights
By Fastwalk
There are many positive things about this novel. The basic idea of exploring a community and how it shapes, and enhances, the lives of its cultured and intellectual residents is appealing. The characters have ideas and some depth. It's nice to see children depicted in a more or less realistic way. It's also nice to see Mendelson further develop her theme of domesticity and its power over the moods and well-being of those who experience it. Reading Home Comforts encouraged me to invest a little more in the domestic realm myself, although often my goals outstrip my grasp.

On the other hand, the book shows major weaknesses that perhaps are characteristic of beginning novelists. Basically, the plot is clunky. The characters' problems are developed and then--ridiculously--solved by means of an expedient that no one could possibly believe in. They inherit an apartment? In Manhattan? From a neighbor they barely knew? Give me a break!

I also felt that Mendelson wandered far from the economic realism of Austen or Trollope. We're supposed to believe that a family with three children, and expensive tastes, living on the income of one moderately successful person (moderately successful in THE ARTS) is able to send two children to private school and plans to send a third to a costly preschool? In Manhattan private schools cost about $25,000 a year, when all costs are factored in. So, for the two girls, we're at $50,000. Plus, they're planning on a $12,000 a year preschool for Stuart. We're at $62,000 just with tuition! And don't they have to plan for college? This is wildly unrealistic. Let's not forget that their domestic ambitions also require spending a lot on fancy foodstuffs. Plus, their cultural ambitions require much money for artistic endeavors, including expensive musical instruments for their children and private lessons.

I can't imagine how this could be possible, given the economic situation that Mendelson outlines. Given that she sets the situation up this way, though, it's even more ridiculous to imagine that this family will be driven from Manhattan to the hated suburbs in part because of a coop special assessment. Such assessments are time-limited. Anne couldn't take on an extra music student or two a week? She has a mom living in the area who adores her children. Her mom couldn't look after Stuart during those few extra hours? Her older two kids are already in school, but she can't step up her (highly flexible) work endeavors a notch? Instead, the family has to bag it and move to the suburbs?

And why can't they move to Brooklyn? This is never explained. I'm forced to conclude they couldn't move to Brooklyn because it wouldn't work for the plot. There are many cultured, musical, and intellectual people in Brooklyn. This family is depicted as owning a reasonable apartment in Manhattan. If sold, that could easily enable them to buy a very decent apartment with reasonable maintenance in Brooklyn. Why wouldn't they do that, instead of (inexplicably) going to Putnam county, which would require the family's earner, Charles, to commute an hour and a half each way every time he needed to go to the city for his job? This is absurd.

I believe Putnam county figures in the novel only so Mendelson can depict the sharpest possible contrast between the culture of the Braithwaites and the bumpkins who live in Putnam County. They are obese, they are inspid, and they don't even accept that the Braithwaite's daughter, with her appalling academic record, would automatically outrank the local yokels in terms of the school tracking system.

Sad to say, I think Mendelson is a snob. She had to set the novel up this way so that she could portray the full heartbreak of the threatened loss of community by a family so culturally deserving as the Braithwaites. Frankly, they might have learned something by seeing how the scorned people of Putnam managed their lives. But no, they're never forced to do this, because they inherit an apartment--and find the proof of their inheritance in a potato bin! This really is not a good ending. The plot dynamics are labored and it's hard to maintain interest when the reader can see a mile away what's going to happen.

To return to the positive, though, Mendelson does have a strong point of view on modern life and how it can best be lived and she situates her characters in a community that, as others have noted, almost becomes a character itself. In my view, in her future work she should think harder about the plot and try to find mechanisms for advancing the story that don't short circuit her characters' growth by solving their problems without requiring much, or anything, of them.

Utterly satisfying
By Pimm
Hatred is not the first emotion that one usually associates

with a favorite book, but for the first 250 or so pages of this 336-page

book, I was convinced that I did, indeed, heartily dislike Cheryl

Mendelson's Morningside Heights. The "typical" Morningside Heights

characters that populate this novel can be extremely irritating, with

their relentless self-made problems, inveterate narcissism, and attendant

(and tedious) therapy sessions. Despite all of the promise for annoyance

that Mendelson's first novel initially serves up, the author manages to

offer something wholly ingenious and even brave: completely unadulterated

optimism. I have yet to read a modern literary novel written for adults

that believes so unrelentingly in everything turning out just as it

should, and it is that quality that makes Morningside Heights one of the

more original and memorable books I have read in quite a long time.

Optimism does not normally strike me as a remarkable, or even necessarily

admirable, quality, but Mendelson wields it without irony, shame, or

sentiment, and the result is a story that is deeply satisfying in an

old-fashioned way. Mendelson's application of a type of storyline

(complete with a mystery, a buried treasure, and everyone getting exactly

what they deserve in the end) derived from classic children's literature

to adult literary fiction is absolutely inspired. Morningside Heights

gives us what we all want: profound satisfaction dressed up in literary

ingenuity.

The Piano Shop on the Left Bank: Discovering a Forgotten Passion in a Paris Atelier, by Thad Carhart

Walking his two young children to school every morning, Thad Carhart passes an unassuming little storefront in his Paris neighborhood. Intrigued by its simple sign—Desforges Pianos—he enters, only to have his way barred by the shop’s imperious owner. Unable to stifle his curiosity, he finally lands the proper introduction, and a world previously hidden is brought into view. Luc, the atelier’s master, proves an indispensable guide to the history and art of the piano. Intertwined with the story of a musical friendship are reflections on how pianos work, their glorious history, and stories of the people who care for them, from amateur pianists to the craftsmen who make the mechanism sing. The Piano Shop on the Left Bank is at once a beguiling portrait of a Paris not found on any map and a tender account of the awakening of a lost childhood passion.

Praise for The Piano Shop on the Left Bank:

“[Carhart’s] writing is fluid and lovely enough to lure the rustiest plunker back to the piano bench and the most jaded traveler back to Paris.”
–San Francisco Chronicle

“Captivating . . . [Carhart] joins the tiny company of foreigners who have written of the French as verbs. . . . What he tries to capture is not the sight of them, but what they see.”
–The New York Times

“Thoroughly engaging . . . In part it is a book about that most unpredictable and pleasurable of human experiences, serendipity. . . . The book is also about something more difficult to pin down, friendship and community.”
–The Washington Post

“Carhart writes with a sensuousness enhanced by patience and grounded by the humble acquisition of new insight into music, his childhood, and his relationship to the city of Paris.”
–The New Yorker

From Publishers Weekly
In this engaging memoir, an American writer living in Paris recounts his experiences in a piano shop tucked into an out-of-the way street on the rive gauche. Because the elderly proprietor refuses to admit strangers to the atelier where he repairs, rebuilds and sells used pianos to select customers, Carhart does not at first get in. But with an introduction from another client and the help of the owner's younger assistant and heir apparent, Luc, Carhart is finally welcomed into a magical space crowded with pianos of all makes and vintages. Soon he becomes one of the favored insiders who stop by nearly every day to gossip and talk about pianos with Luc. Luc's love of pianos is so infectious that Carhart's own childhood passion for the instrument is rekindled. He starts to take lessons again and buys a piano for his small apartment, a purchase that takes some time, for Luc, who regards a piano as a member of a family, prides himself on finding instruments compatible with his customers. Caught up in Luc's zeal, Carhart immerses himself in the history and mechanics of the piano, and he includes chapters on the craft of piano making, the instrument's development over the centuries and the fine points of tuning. In his renewed fascination, he reflects on piano teachers, those of his childhood as well as several renowned teachers of today. Carhart conveys his affection for Luc, the atelier and the piano with such enthusiasm that readers might be inspired to return to their own childhood instrument. At the very least, they will enjoy this warmhearted, intelligent insight into a private Paris. (Apr. 20)

From Library Journal
Carhart's life as an American expatriate in Paris provides the setting for this witty and fascinating account of finding a piano to purchase and relearning how to play. His familiarity with French customs aids in his dealings with and subsequent acceptance as a friend by Luc, the proprietor of Desforges Pianos. A piano restoration workshop by day, it turns into an exclusive local hangout Friday nights. Gracefully shifting from the present day to his youth, Carhart, a freelance writer, provides both technical explanations about the workings of the piano and a history of the instrument. This background information helps place his studies and the remarks of various piano teachers, technicians, and aficionados in context. Similar to Noah Adams's fine Piano Lessons (LJ 3/15/96) with a continental flavor, Carhart's book will be of special interest to patrons with an affection for pianos or experience traveling in France. Warmly recommended for all libraries. Barry Zaslow, Miami Univ. Libs., Oxford, OH

From The New Yorker
When Carhart, an American living in Paris, decides to buy a used piano, he meets Luc, a modest local piano dealer and repairman, who not only sells him one but becomes something of a mentor. As the author's passion for playing is reawakened, he falls in love with the instrument itself: its history, the rigor and idiosyncrasies of piano design and tuning, the unique feel and sound that attend each individual model. Carhart writes with a sensuousness enhanced by patience and grounded by the humble acquisition of new insights into music, his childhood, and his relationship to the city of Paris.

"A Fascinating & Informative Book"
By Joseph J. Hanssen
I can't even begin to express in words what a joy it was to read this book. Thad Carhart has written a book that should appeal to a broad spectrum of readers that includes musicians, piano lovers, novices and professionals alike. Yes, even those who think a piano is just a piece of furniture will learn a lot, and probably be shamed into getting back to practicing once again. If you already own a piano, wish to own one, or just want to know more about pianos & their history this book is an excellent source of information. Did you know that "Fazioli" concert grand pianos costs well over one hundred thousand dollars, and that only sixty are made each year, and there are fewer than one thousand "Fazioli" pianos in existence, and each are essentially handmade? This book is chuck full of information that is so interesting, especially about the 16th and 17th century pianos. There is also a lot of technical information about how piano's work, that explains everything about the instrument, strings, sounding board, etc.
Wait, I can't stop yet. Not only is this book full of history and excellent information about pianos, there is a story, too. Thad passes a little piano storefront in his Paris neighborhood each day while taking his two children to their school. One day he decides to enter the shop to check it out, meets the grumpy owner & is rebuffed, but eventually gets the right introduction, (you have to be referred by an established customer) and the shop then becomes a daily part of his life. Here he learns from Luc, the atelier's master, the history and art of piano's. Luc becomes a valuable friend. He helps Thad find a piano for himself that he loves, a Stingl baby grand from Vienna. In Thad's almost daily visits to the store's atelier he meets many interesting and charming people. They all share their love of piano's, music, and life over a glass of wine. It made me wish I was part of their group.
The piano has always been my favorite instrument, and it has always fascinated me with it's beautiful sound. Yes, I am one of those people who have become lax, and not devoted enough time to keeping up with my piano playing. This book is certainly an inspiration to anyone who appreciates the piano. A wonderful & fascinating story, and detailed history of the piano. Highly Recommended.

Mesmerizing little book...
By C. Middleton
A beautiful musical instrument can be compared to a great vintage wine; one does not need to know all its subtleties in order to appreciate its fine texture, bouquet, and unique taste. Familiarity with art, for example, bolsters one's appreciation of its many forms, and puts one in a frame of mind never to take it for granted. In ~The Piano Shop on the Left Bank~ we are permitted entry into the world of the connoisseur of fine pianos and the magic of superior music. This book describes a re-acqaintance with a love affair of pianos, against the backdrop of romantic Paris and the diverse and unusual characters that make-up this world.
An American living in Paris comes across a little piano repair shop that lies almost hidden from the frantic vagaries of modern life. Something about the little shop captures his attention - a spell is cast, and with some persistence, he gains admittance into a secret world for the initiated only - and his journey begins into that predominately guarded artisan society in Paris which the general, foreign public believe only exists in 19th century novels. This elegant text is written with thoughtful care and attention that displays an attitude of mind that is quite rare.
Because Carhart is honest about his love affair with the piano and the Classic and Romantic music that we associate with the instrument, Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven and Scarlatte, the reader cannot help but remember personal associations with this world. While reading the text, images from my own past concerning music and the piano rose to consciousness - lying at my mother's feet while she played Chopin, being facinated by the movement of her feet as she depressed the foot pedals and the distinct fragrance of the wood. This beguiling book captures many such images and much more.
The book is also unique in so far as the reader receives a history lesson on the piano, from its beginnings in 16th century Italy to its height with the American Steinway to its circular return to Italy, the Fazioli, the finest hand made piano in the world. We actually meet Paola Fazioli in the book and experience the utter majesty and beauty of his creations. To be sure, without question, I felt humbled in the presence of this man and his works of art, following Carhart as he's invited to sit down and play the legendary 'Faziloi 308' - 'the world's most expensive piano' - actually feeling the instruments power of tone through the words on the page.
~The Piano Shop on the Left Bank~ is one of those texts which is difficult to put down, but you do so anyway because you want the reading experience to last. And once the book is finally finished, there is a certain sadness that the experience is complete, however, the beauty of a good book is that you can return to it time and again, entering its world.
This mesmerizing little book is recommended to any lover of music, no matter what genre or classification. Carhart manages to harness music's universality, its common-shared magic that without, life would be much harder to tolerate. This book will enter, in time, the realm of classic. A pleasure.

A charming look into a usually hidden world
By A Customer
The Piano Shop on the Left Bank is a beautifully-written book that will appeal to three different, although probably overlapping, audiences. The first audience is comprised of people who love playing the piano as adults. I recently resumed lessons after an interlude of half a lifetime, and Mr. Carhart's book expressed many of the feelings through which I have progressed in returning to pianos and to piano lessons, albeit far more elegantly than I could ever express them.
The second audience is comprised of people who love pianos. I also fall into this group; I love pianos for themselves. They are unsurpassed musical instruments, and this book gives you a glimpse at their history as objects as well as their existence as music-makers.
The third audience for this book is comprised of those who love to get behind the scenes in Europe, viewing a lifestyle that is hard to find (although it can be found) here in the United States. Luc, the primary craftsperson in the book, is immensely appealing both for his craft (and art) and for his perspectives on the world. He runs his piano shop as he feels it should be run, and because his customers appreciate his worth, he can do so successfully. Mr. Carhart manages to become part of the shop's world, and vividly takes the reader with him.
In short, this is an immensely appealing book that makes the reader eager to rush out and find a Luc for themselves.

The Federalist: A Commentary on the Constitution of the United States (Modern Library Classics), by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, James Ma

The series of essays that comprise The Federalist constitutes one of the key texts of the American Revolution and the democratic system created in the wake of independence. Written in 1787 and 1788 by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay to promote the ratification of the proposed Constitution, these papers stand as perhaps the most eloquent testimonial to democracy that exists. They describe the ideas behind the American system of government: the separation of powers; the organization of Congress; the respective positions of the executive, legislative, and judiciary; and much more. The Federalist remains essential reading for anyone interested in politics and government, and indeed for anyone seeking a foundational statement about democracy and America.

This new edition of The Federalist is edited by Robert Scigliano, a professor in the political science department at Boston College. His substantive Introduction sheds clarifying new light on the historical context and meaning of The Federalist. Scigliano also provides a fresh and definitive analysis of the disputed authorship of several sections of this crucial work.

Serious Political Thinking
By James E. Egolf
The new edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS edited by Clinton Rossiter and co. is probably the best paperback edition. Rossiter and Charles Kesler did a good job in presenting these papers, and their explanations and notes make this book clear for readers. THE FEDERALIST PAPERS alone are an important source of serious political thinking. In an age of almost unbridled political power, corruption, empire buidling, etc. THE FEDERALIST PAPERS are important reminder of what a Free Republic (not an empire) should be.

THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were written by Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804), John Jay (1745-1829), and James Madison (1751-1835). Due to concerns about the New York State legislators ratifying the The U.S. Constitution, these papers were journal pieces written to New York journals and newspapers to convince both the residents and state legislators to ratify The U.S. Constitution. One should note there were other published articles supporting ratification of The U.S. Constitution and other articles can be read in a text titled FRIENDS OF THE CONSTITUTION.

What is alarming about THE FEDERALISTS PAPERS is that they were written for most readers. If one were to write such articles these days, most Americans would not read them nor comprehend them. This is a sad commentary on Americans regarding serious political writing regarding their birthright. If THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were assigned to high school kids, whoever would make such an assignment would be fired or worse.

THE FEDERALIST PAPERS give important explanations of the separation of powers, limits of each branch of the central government (The Federal Government), and how political power should be used within severe limitations. These articles were a brilliant attempt to mitigate fears that The U.S. Constitution would give far too much power to the the central or federal government.

The late Clinton Rossiter had a useful suggestion for those who did not want to read all 85 of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS. He suggested that the best numbers were 1,2,6,9,10, 14, 15, 16,23, 37, 39,47, 49, 51, 62, 70, 78, 84, and 85. Those readers who read these numbered papers would probably want to read the remainder.

This newer paperback edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS has some valuable features to help the reader navigate complex political thinking. The U.S. Constitution is placed in the end of the book with page numbers of the book whereby the authors of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS refer to that section of the U.S. Constitution. This gives clarity as to exactly what the authors were arguing regarding specific sections of the proposed U.S. Constitution. Another important feature of this edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS consists of the notes. The men who wrote THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were learned men who had seriously studied history and political thought. The notes explain the examples of Ancient Greek and Roman History used to make some of the arguments. These notes also refer to examples of Renaissance and English History which were also used to make good arguments from historical examples. One could get first rate learning experience of Ancient Greek and Roman History as well as a better view of European Renaissance and English History.

Readers should not forget that the authors of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were responding to the Anti-Federalists and their articles titled THE ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS. Too often the Anti-Federalists are referred to as obstrcutionists and narrow minded men. This is simply not true. The ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS were as well written and brilliantly argued as THE FEDERALIST PAPERS.
One should note that one of the major objections of the Anti-Federalists to ratification of The U.S. Constitution was that it did not contain a Bill of Rights. The Federalists took this argument seriously. Basically, one could argue that without the Anti-Federalists, there would have been no Bill of Rights. Ergo, without The Bill of Rights, there would have been no U.S. Constitution. The Anti-Federalists were very important in the ratification of The U.S. Constitution.

Anyone who wants to define who Americans should be should read THE FEDERALIST PAPERS. They should also read THE ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS and read clear, informed, and well written political theory from men who could actually think. Most political hacks and too many American citizens are not even vaguely aware of this important political writing. Yet, this political writing is the very best American political thinking in U.S. History. This reviewer highly recommends the Rossiter-Kesler edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS and other editions of THE ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS.

The rich keep getting richer...
By Stephen
and the Mentor Federalist Papers keep getting better. Yes, that's right. They actually managed to improve on it. The great new additions include the Declaration, the Articles, and an excellent new introduction by Charles Kessler. I think the killer feature for new readers will be the notes in the back, which, if you (like me) are shaky in your Greek history (and the finer points of European), do a great job of explaining allusions and references by the Papers. Be sure to use this feature -- there's no indication in the text that a note exists, but you should just look if you're unsure of a historical setting (or something similar), and there probably will be one.
On the minus side, I do miss Rossiter's introduction. It wasn't as good for laying out the plan of the work, but it should have been included (along with Kessler's) for its excellent overview of the contemporary situation and the philosophy behind the papers. Also, I feel that Rossiter's contents were slightly better than Kessler's. And, the page numbers are changed, invalidating older references to them. But all in all it's an improvement, and certainly the Mentor edition is the only one to have. Period. It's the one used by at least some of the Supreme Court Justices, and it retains that single dominating feature, Rossiter's cross-referenced Constitution (and index of ideas).
As for the Papers themselves, of course, they need no review. They are the first and ultimate Constitutional commentary, and fascinating reading besides. As literature they stand out for the exceptional style (all the more remarkable considering the haste in which they were written) and clear thinking, and more than any other book they define how the U.S. _should_ work.
All in all, this is one of the best book bargains on the market, that rare coincidence where best edition meets mass-market paperback. What are you waiting for?

The best edition of the Federalist Papers
By Chitown Reader
This is the best edition of the Federalist Papers. It includes many extras, but especially useful is the text of the US Constitution with cross-references to specific pages of the Federalist Papers referring to that provision. I highly recommend the Federalist Papers generally, and more specifically this edition to anyone wishing to know more about the founding and ratification of the Constitution.

Sammy Keyes and the Skeleton Man, by Wendelin Van Draanen

“The hottest sleuth to appear in children’s books since Nancy Drew” (The Boston Globe) is back! Don’t miss the second book in the series that’s been described as “a combination of Carl Hiaasen’s Flush and Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum books” (School Library Journal) and hailed as “nonstop whodunits” (Kirkus Reviews)!

It might have been just a regular Halloween night, but then out of nowhere this skeleton appears and comes charging straight at us.

After the skeleton plows them over, Sammy and her friends look to see what he was running from. That’s when they find a fire starting to take hold in someone’s foyer, and Frankenstein tied to a chair in the living room. Someone’s taking trick-or-treat way too far!

Sammy’s not surprised when her least favorite cop tells her to butt out. But the man under the Frankenstein mask doesn’t want anyone poking around either. And nothing makes Sammy want to look closer than being told there’s nothing to see here. . . .

Praise for the Sammy Keyes series:

“If Kinsey Millhone ever hires a junior partner, Sammy Keyes will be the first candidate on the list. She’s feisty, fearless, and funny. A top-notch investigator!” —New York Times bestselling author Sue Grafton

“Sammy is smart-mouthed and hard-hitting . . . the sleuth delights from start to finish. Keep your binoculars trained on Sammy Keyes.” —Publishers Weekly

“The most winning junior detective ever in teen lit. (Take that, Nancy Drew!)” —Midwest Children’s Book Review

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-While living a surreptitious life sneaking in and out of Gram's adults-only apartment complex, Sammy observes the unusual in the usual world. Halloween finds her and her friends mustering nerve to wend their way through dense shrubbery to the front door of scary Bush House to trick-or-treat when they are nearly knocked down by a "skeleton man" scurrying away with his loot in a pillow case. Sammy peers into the house to discover it's on fire, rescues its owner, and becomes embroiled in his family history. Her quick switches between adult intuitiveness and childish pranks are in keeping with a personality that neither thinks twice about rushing into a burning house nor about exposing the misdemeanors of a classmate via the school's public-address system. Only Sammy and a few other characters are developed to any extent. The nosy neighbor, the weak grandmother, and the cantankerous cops are examples of stereotyped adults. Sammy's classmates run the gamut of sweet and naive friends to snide and snotty enemies. However, readers will enjoy the mystery, hijinks, plotting, and adult comeuppance. Occasional black-and-white drawings illustrate the book. A fun read, particularly for fans of the previous book about this young sleuth.

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-7. The irrepressible Sammy Keyes, introduced in Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief (1998), returns to solve another mystery--this one involving a family feud and some burgled books. On Halloween, Sammy and her friends decide to trick-or-treat at the Bush House (named for its overgrown shrubbery), and interrupt a mugging and burglary by a skeleton-costumed assailant. With the help of her friends and a police acquaintance, Officer Borsch, Sammy manages to prove the identity of the burglar, recover the missing first editions, and reunite the estranged owners of the Bush House. A side plot involving a classmate's making prank phone calls in Sammy's name adds humor that middle-grade readers will appreciate. Van Draanen's tone is light, but well-developed characters and Sammy's somewhat unconventional lifestyle (she resides illegally with her grandmother in a senior citizens' complex while her mother "finds" herself in Hollywood) make this a worthy choice for mystery buffs, especially fans of Betsy Byars' Herculeah Jones series. Kay Weisman

From Kirkus Reviews
The live-wire young sleuth who debuted in Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief (p. 502) catapults into another headlong caper after scotching a murder attempt on Halloween. Nerving themselves to approach a spooky house while out trick-or-treating, Sammy and her friends find the door open, a fire set on the floor and reclusive old Chauncey LeBard tied to a chair. A robbery, it seemsbut what's missing? Books, as it turns out: a collection of high-spot first editions. Being incurably nosy, Sammy commences to pry with a will, meanwhile countering hateful classmate Heather's latest sly attempt at character assassination by setting up a devastating public denouement. As readers of the first book know, it's not as if Sammy's life isn't already complicated; she lives illegally with her grandmother in modest seniors-only housing while her mother is pursuing Hollywood dreams, has to fend off a suspicious neighbor, and keep up with her schoolwork in the face of multiple distractions. Artfully throwing in clues, red herrings, and well-timed revelations, Van Draanen keeps her heroine on the hop, surrounding her with typecast age mates but distinctly drawn, individual adults, most of whom were introduced in the previous book. Sammy is as resourceful and tough as ever, and the breathless pace of this adventure will rivet readers from page one. (Fiction. 10-12) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. Great Book!
By m
This book was great to when she stomped out a fire with a 500 dollar sweater to when she talked over the P.A system(embarrasasing her all time enemy)! It needed to be a couple of more pages longer to actually guess who the robber was, but if you take your time reading you will guess it. Well thought-out plot and charaters(you actually could related to some of the incidents that transpire in this mystery. The real reason why I liked this book is that it isn't filled up with descriptions (about the setting and atmosphere). If you have ever read The Return of the King by J.R.R Tolkien you know what I mean. See his books are exciting but slow-paced(as to this book; fast-paced); if you read 10 paragraphs of his books you'll see that 9 of them are meaningless descriptions and 1 paragraph obout the plot. There are more sophisticated mysteries (i.e The Matter of Roses by David Manuel), but if you are sick of books that are sophisticated and has way too many pages(filled of complex words), I suggested you read this! It's a easy plot to comprehend with real-life situations. Just a easy reading book, but excellent!

She wasn't tring to get in trouble!
By A Customer
7th grader Sammy Keys has got a lot of troubles on her hands. It all started on Halloween at the bush house with her friends. At the bush house no one answered and Sammy saw a fire. After Sammy put it out with a sweater they found Chancey Lebard (the owner of the house, who they call the bush man)tied to a chair. It turns out he was robbed, and sammy was interested an started investigating. The sweater she put the fire out withturned out to be [expensive]. If it got all burn't up, she'd be in trouble.
those are not the only problems Sammy beholds. Her worst enemy Heather wasmaking a fool of her but every one thinks it is really Sammy. as far as Sammy is concerend it is payback time for Heather.
I like every thing about this book. I really like howit has a lot of problems at one time, it makes it more interesting. It also usesgood detail and description. Sammy Keys and the Skeleton Man is full of suspenceand i couldn't put it down. I can't think of anything ididn't like about this book except it had to end.

Sammy and a skeleton man
By A Customer
I read a pretty cool book called Sammy Keys and the Skeleton Man. The book is about a girl who finds out that a guy dressed up like a skeleton stole stuff from a person named Mr. Frankenstein. The reason why they call him Mr. Frankenstin is because he where's a mask that helps him breath. The skeleton man who stole from his house then sold it to the market. She tries to stop the skeleton man from doing it again, so when she finds out where the skeleton man stole, she goes to his house and talks to Mr. Frankenstein and sees if he remembers anything that happened. When she talks to him he barley remembers anything so she tries to trace the clues to see who did it. It brings her to a store when she finds who did it. She gets him trapped then calls the police. Then the skeleton man goes to jail, and then Mr. Frankenstein gets his stuff back and everything is over.

I think the book's message is when you're trying to look for something and you cant find it you should always try to find clues. I also think that when you're about to give up, don't, because there will be always another way to solve it. Sometimes it will be good to ask someone for advice to help you in some ways. The last thing is you should never steal from anyone or a friend you know might tell on you.
I recommend this book to you because it's a pretty cool book. You will always want to see what happens next. I liked it because it was always brings a questions to the book. I also liked how they always add clues to the book and how they put more characters in the book that's why I like this book.

No Contest: Corporate Lawyers and the Perversion of Justice in America, by Ralph Nader, Wesley J. Smith

The legal rights of Americans are threatened as never before. In No Contest, Ralph Nader and Wesley J. Smith reveal how power lawyers--Kenneth Starr perhaps the most notorious among them--misuse and manipulate the law at the expense of fairness and equity. Nader and Smith document how corporate lawyers

  File baseless lawsuits

Use court secrecy to their unfair advantage

  Engage in billing fraud

Nader and Smith sound the warning that this system-wide abuse is eroding our basic legal rights, and propose a positive, commonsense vision of what should be done to reverse the corporate-inspired corruption of civil justice. Timely, incisive, and highly readable, this is a book for all citizens who believe that prompt access to justice is the backbone of democracy, and a precious right to be reclaimed.

Amazon.com Review
The most controversial section of this ringing denunciation of corporate law is that on tort reform, which Ralph Nader, the consumer advocate and 1996 Green Party Presidential candidate, and Wesley J. Smith denounce as "tort deform" measures sure to further insulate corporations from the damage wrought by pollution and dangerous products. But Nader has never shied from controversy, and this series of case studies attacks confidential settlements in injury cases, state ethics boards, and links between high-power corporate lawyers and government officials with an equal measure of indignation and reformist zeal.

From Publishers Weekly
Corporate attorneys are at the center of trends that have increased corporate power in the past 20 years, declare consumer crusader and 1996 presidential candidate Nader and lawyer Smith (coauthors of Winning the Insurance Game). Their book is rambling but important, as it uses case studies to illustrate what they see as unfair situations and potential avenues for reform. For example, confidential settlements in injury cases deprive others from safety warnings; judges can refuse such settlements, and some states have begun passing anti-secrecy laws. Though the American Bar Association recommends that one-third of the members of state ethics boards be non-lawyers, that goal is mostly ignored, and disciplinary boards are notably lax in punishing lawyers who obstruct opponents, destroy evidence or overbill. In strong words, Nader and Smith attack tort reform proposals that would limit manufacturers' liability, calling them "tort deform" measures that would further protect corporations to the detriment of individual consumers. But they don't acknowledge that in some cases?such as the way it can distort medical care?our tort system does need reform. Along with political reforms, the authors find hope in efforts by Harvard Law School alumni to form the Appleseed Foundation, which will establish new centers for law and justice that focus on systemic change, not just legal aid for individuals. From Library Journal
Consumer activist Nader and lawyer Smith trace a long list of ills that afflict our legal system?discovery abuse, excessive delay, lawyer overbilling?to the excessive influence of powerful corporate lawyers and the failure of legal ethics to deal effectively with their excesses. The book's strength lies in its many case studies to illustrate the issues. These studies are highly topical, and many will be familiar even to a casual observer of the legal scene. Even the elderly woman burned by hot McDonald's coffee is discussed. However, the book is weakened by the authors' polemical and sometimes snide tone, and little is added to the substance of legal discourse by consistently referring to tort reform as "tort deform." Still, the authors raise substantial ethical issues in the context of real-life legal situations and provide good starting points for the legal profession to examine its conscience and for the public to take it to task. Recommended for law school and academic libraries, and public libraries with substantial law or business collections.

Required Reading for Law Students
By John A. Jeffery
As a law student, I have to say that this should be on every law students "must-read" list! Nader and Smith clearly describe the hardball ruthless tactics used by today's corporate lawyers. This is not the kind of stuff they teach you in law school!
It took real guts and courage to expose the unethical tactics used by too many lawyers today, and I'm grateful that they did so. Highly recommended.

No Contest book by Ralph Nader and Wesley Smith.... In their book No Contest by Ralph Nader and Wesley J. Smith, the authors give a series of examples about law at the corporate level. Many of their examples deal with wronged individuals suing a corporation. Frequently the plaintiffs are frustrated by a series of delays, misrepresentations, intentional misunderstandings, and multiple appeals. The judges do not discipline the lawyers, at least not to any effective extent, and the judges do not throw out frivolous motions. The judges tend to side with big law firms and with clever lines of reasoning, and not with the plaintiff. The original plaintiff injury, such as a wrongful death due to negligent corporate behavior, is forgotten in the mire of lawyer activity, and the judges fail to consider the need for relief of the plaintiff, without further anguishing delay. The plaintiff is faced with interminable costs and tedious delays without relief. There is no doubt reform is needed. ................

For a remedy, authors Nader and Wesley suggest an Appleseed Foundation, formed of local community volunteer groups, together with some overseeing coordinating committees. They mention Harvard graduates as playing a prominent behind the scenes part in overseeing reform. ..............

The problem with this approach is: first, volunteerism, presumably without pay, is insufficient motivation to overcome such entrenched and profitable bad habits. Second, it is not clear just what specific steps these groups should recommend, other than complain, and point out injustices of which many persons are already aware. . Third, there are already volunteer groups (I have a list of over 20) around the country who are angry with their treatment by the law and yet who have not been able to bring about a change in habits.

THOSE SUE-HAPPY CORPORATIONS
By STEVEN B. MCCRARY
Beware of the multinational corporations. Not only do they stick it to the taxpayers in forms of bailouts, tax "incentives", and other similar accounts recievable, they are quite willing to stick it to citizens in court and screw up the meaning of the word "due process" in America and the world. A sad commentary on our justice system but a MUST READ.

A valiant effort at "Cracking the SAT II"
By R. Kessler
Overall, although I admit there is no perfect SAT II: E/M book (nor will there ever be), I would have to say that the Princeton Review staff does the best job of any other SAT II: Biology E/M study guide. This book is a masterpiece of moderation; it lacks the humiliatingly low (for readers, that is) language--and title--of the "SAT II Biology for Dummies, yet also does not add university-level or AP biology in the way that Barron's and Kaplan sometimes do. The author herself also has a remarkable way of interacting with the reader, understanding that most readers will only absorb information if they are frequently quizzed and treated with some humor. Another strong point I noticed in the book involved the way the author was able to simplify esoteric concepts by use of comparisons to other things that the average teenager can relate to. The large, detailed diagrams certainly did not hurt either, and I found it helpful to read the authors' step-by-step summary of body systems like the nervous and circulatory ones. I discovered that on test day, it usually did me better to fully understand the big picture in much the same way that it was outlined in the book; for someone in a tenth-grade honors (not AP) biology class like me, there was a balance of informative and explanatory information throughout the book. Unfortunately, by the time I completed the exam this past June, I found that much of the author's hard work had gone to waste because difficult concepts such as cellular respiration barely appeared on the test. Simply put, the test has changed to one where doesn't really help to know more than basic concepts; the one or two super-detailed questions on each SAT II Biology will likely be so specific that they will only be covered in the textbook, anyway...

For those who praise Kaplan/Barron's for the extraneous detail they include to bring short-lived confidence to readers, making them think they know more than everyone else, all I can say is that the SAT in Biology has become so much more of a reasoning or "thinking" test (with the infamous lab questions) that books can only go so far; it is so much more the student than the book that determines the score -- it pays to read a review book that actually explains the material accurately and lucidly but might compromise on detail a little. As a final note, while nobody in my class who used a detailed, "thorough" review book received a score over the low-600's, my friend and I, who used Princeton Review and our own intellect exculsively on the test, received a 770 and 750, respectively. In my opinion, it is best to begin with Princeton Review and then progress to the other books only if there is extra studying time and have mastered that which is covered in Princeton's. Good Luck!

Great ...
By Blueberry Chocolate
I borrowed this book from my local library 2 weeks before the test (last June) and didn't finish it, having not studied some of the human systems, and I was really nervous. Not only was it my first year of Biology, my teacher didn't teach us anything and I totally relied on the textbook if I wanted to learn something. Having read the textbook the whole year + going over the Princeton review book, I got a 700. I'm sure I'll get a better score if I finished the book and finished the test (I didn't get to the last five questions due to poor time management). The best part of the book is that it's interesting and doesn't bore you out. Unlike the Barrons, PR is concise and easy to understand. However, if you're determined to get an 800 then by all mean stick to the Barrons - more is always better than less.

Good Practice Tests, Poor Review Chapters
By Scout Finch55
Princeton Review's SAT Biology was the only book I used to prepare for the exam (in addition to my high school biology book) and the score I got is 780. First of all, as all Princeton Review prep books, this one is written badly with frequent typos and other errors. Princeton Review claims that they are using the style that is easy to comprehend for an average student (hence, instead of saying that "acetylcoline is a major neurotransmitter responsible for motion", they would write "acetylcoline is like a tennis ball, you know, it's kind of like when you are playing tennis; that stuff also causes our muscles to move"), but in reality this language is truly confusing - I even had trouble drawing a parallel between what I've learned at school and what they were trying to say. Therefore, their review explanations are basically useless - use you bio book from school instead to review (just look up the bold words from the review sections and make sure you know them - look up those you don't know in your textbook, don't bother reading Princeton's definitions)

However, Princeton Review's practice tests are just fabulous. Those tests are exactly the same thing you'll see on the real one - in all senses, in their format, style, wording, and difficulty. Some of the questions that were on my real test were exactly the same with the Princeton Review's practice test!!! I was shocked when on the test day I saw three exact questions I did only three days ago. It's even amazing that this kind of test prep. material is available (I could not find anything as accurate for the SAT II Math 2C).

In all, the value of the Princeton Review SAT Biology is the same as that of the Official SAT Study Guide from collegeboard. Even though the review sections are not very helpful, the practice tests are exactly the same thing you'll see on the real exam. And, as I've mentioned earlier, if you feel unprepared, you can always look at the key words in the Princeton review sections and look up those that you don't know in you biology textbook.
