Clinical cases are the way to review
By A Customer
I disagree with the Dr. from Bahrain. I am a US medical student and found this book very helpful. The cases that were covered all appeared in one form or another on the USMLE Step 2. Is it an all encompassing review of medical school? NO. But it is a thorough review of high-yield cases that are likely to show up on the exam. I recommend it to anyone who has a limited amount of time to study and wants to review some high-yield topics. I scored very high on both Step 1 and Step 2 and am applying for orthopedic surgery residencies. I bought a lot of books for studying for Step 2 and this was one of the more helpful ones.

High yield questions
By Ehab El Akkary
This book is divided into 2 main parts, the first includes cases which are good but their explanations contain many information that are beyond the scope of the exam or are not high yield. The second part is great for the quality of questions it contains, I think these 400 questions cover the main ideas of the exam with a format that looks nearly like that of the USMLE step 2 exam, I reccomend this book for its great questions.

clinically based review
By ms4nyu
I think reviewing cases is the way to go. Books like First Aid are good for step 1 when you are just reviewing lists of facts, but Step 2 requires you to understand how to manage cases. I didn't have a lot of time to study and this book was a good way to review material across all specialties in a short period of time.

A Balanced Approach to Medical School & Life
By Iveta J. Brigis
This is a great resource for those who want to go into medicine but don't want to sacrifice balance in their daily lives and relationships. Medical school and a career in medicine can cause a lot of stress, and the author shares some practical advice for making the experience more positive, focused, and productive. The valuable inside tips on the how to's of the application and school search procedure are a must for anyone seriously considering applying to med school.

Forget about pre-med advisors
By Dm89
before i read this book i was lost. everyone gave advice and pretended to know best on how to get into med school even though none of them actually got in. i had spent money and time trying to get into the most competitive premedical programs and taking courses and credits i thought were a MUST to get into med school. After i received this book from my sis i realized how wrong i was. i'm doing a BA now in an area that i love while i do my prerequisites for med school.
this book replaces all the pre-med advisors and expensive books out there. it breaks down step by step what you need to do. it gives advice on how to study & learn the pre-requisite courses (both sciene + humanities) and illustrates clearly how you don't need to be a A+ student to succeed and get into medical school. Best of all it made me realize that medical school is a life long career/school and that before you put all the work into it make sure you know what exactly you want.
I couldn't let go of this book once i started. within the first 2 weeks of reading this book my grades got better and i finally know where i'm going and how to get there. If you're sure you want med school or not.... this book will definitely clear all these doubts and put you back on the right track

You'll be cranky!
By D. Essel
Please don't confuse this Read To Me series with other Thomas the Tank books. For instance, Catch me, Catch me is called a Pictureback Reader, and although it is meant for 4 or 5 year olds to learn how to read, my 21 month old loves me to read it to her--the extremely simple text is all her attention span can take. This book, Cranky Day, however, has a lot of writing and is meant for the longer attention spans of 3 or 4 plus year olds so isn't working with my 21 month old. I don't like the tiny photos for pictures (where the text takes up just as much room as the photos), and I agree with another reviewer that the photos are dark. The full page drawings in Catch Me Catch Me are much better, as are the simplistic drawings in Thomas the Tank Engines Big Blue Treasury. Depends upon the age of the child I guess, when it comes to selecting Thomas books!

A Crane, A Collapse, And A Complete Mess
By Joshua Koppel
Three stories, Cranky Bugs, Put-Upon Percy, and Lady Hatt's Birthday. These are in keeping with the television show, but not the original stories by Reverend Awdry. For instance you will notice references to Sir Topham Hatt as he is known on television (in the books he is The Fat Controller).

In Cranky Bugs, Thomas and Percy have to deal with a new crane at the docks. Cranky, the crane, does not like small engines but learns his lesson.

Put-Upon Percy has Percy working very hard and getting very dirty. But after some excitement at the mines, Percy is rewarded with having a new coat of paint put upon him.

Finally, Sir Topham Hatt has trouble getting to Lady Hatt's birthday celebration. Utilizing many vehicles, and getting dirtier with each one, he manages to get to the celebration just in time.

Each of the three stories is illustrated with stills from the television show. Some are small and some are large. While it may seem absurd to an adult that a piece up burlap can hold back an avalanche (in Put-Upon Percy), kids really enjoy these stories.

Not the same as the previous pictureback books from R.H.
By A Customer
Back in 1993, 4, and leading up to 6, Random House published about 5 or 7 pictureback books from the Thomas series, from the era of Ringo Starr narrating. The main difference between those books and "The Cranky Day" is quite disappointing. "The Cranky Day" (which is even titled wrong. [Cranky Bugs]) is written straight from the vhs tape, as if the closed captioning was copied and pasted into a book. Nothing is explained, and I am not exaggerating. If you haven't seen any of these stories yet, you'll be very, VERY confused when you hear the dialect of an engine say "LOOK OUT!" or, "DON'T MOVE", then to see an image, of what might be happening, with no reasonable explaination given. There never is a sentence in the book saying: "Percy had helped lift Cranky up with a rope, but foolishly forgot to detach it." or something with reason. Overall, it's still an okay book. but I am disappointed that Random House copied straight from the tape...yuck!

This book gets the job.
By A Customer
If you are looking for a quick, concise, and casually comprehensive overview of chemistry for the SAT II Subject test then I recommend this book. If you haven't taken a year of high school chemistry, then this book probably won't help. But if you have, or are enrolled in chem, going through this book will help you review important concepts and give you enough knowledge about the concepts you may not know yet to do well on those questions on the test. You don't need to know chemistry inside and out like the exhaustive Barron's SAT II book teaches you, just a concise and brief overview is what you need and this book gets the job done well!

Good book but has its weak points
By Amazon Customer
This book is a great REVIEW book. But if you dont know a topic in this book go straight to your teacher because this book is hard to learn something out of.
Pro's: It does go fairly in depth and I even suggest buying this book for the regents. Updated it has little boxes that help you remember the key terms. It helps you go through the math problems toghther. After a section it gives you practice problems and completly explains each answer. 3 real SAT II practice tests in teh end make it one of the best SAT II Chem review books
Con: Not long enough discussing the topics. I can go through this book in a 2-3 weeks if I do just 1 topic a day. More practice questions should be given for the sections fot the book as well.

Good, but not adequate
By A Customer
A lot of people told me that this book will cover the most of the exam. Well, they were right in some ways, but not all. I bought both Barron's and PR's, but neither of them were like the real one. This book was certainly way too easy compared with the real Chem exam. If you're looking for a high score like 700+, then I recommend buying another one along with this one, because it helped me with the concept on the first part of the exam. If you're confident with the basic concepts, then don't buy this book. It's repetitious and time-consuming for more advanced students.

Amazon.com Review
Dr. William Pollack, clinical psychologist and bestselling author of Real Boys and Real Boys' Voices, continues his fight against dangerous gender stereotypes with this essential, satisfyingly hefty volume for parents, teachers, and coaches of boys. He aims to crack the "boy code" (basically, society's unfair assumption that boys are testosterone-driven animals who must convey machismo at all costs) by getting readers to reflect on their own thoughts, feelings, and habitual responses. Designed to stand on its own, Real Boys Workbook revisits material covered in Pollack's other books: spot-on anecdotes about boys and their parents, boys suppressing emotions, boys and sports, plus a humbling dose of smart suggestions for using empathy, shared activities, and respect to nurture their loving qualities. In addition, it provides a broad range of open-ended questions to lead well-intentioned readers toward a path of more constructive behavior.

Readers can easily zero in on chapters that will address their immediate concerns (including aggression, loss, competitiveness, and adolescence). And each chapter is accompanied by a thoughtfully composed set of questions. Some draw vivid scenarios for adults to ponder that are analogous to common boyhood experiences (like being dropped off at daycare), in which the boy is expected to keep a stiff upper lip. Others ask readers to critically examine their beliefs, observations, and typical responses to situations arising at school, at home, and on the ball field. Much of the broad self-awareness generated through Pollack's exercises will benefit folks who interact with children of either gender (a broad audience indeed). The trick will be getting this self-awareness into the hands of thosewho need it most. --Liane Thomas

Too late

As a parent of at teenage boy, I was overwhelmed and discouraged by this book. It may be better suited to parents of young boys who can incorporate information from this book from an early age.

Excellent manual for raising boys as whole people
By P. Finger
This book is an excellent practical manual of how to raise boys as whole people. I see this book at tremendously valuable for protecting people of both sexes from the common misconceptions of what masculinity means.

Easy to use. Simple for parents, teachers, mentors.
By Sean B.
This workbook is a fine follow up to the original book. The exercises are easy to do and challenge the reader to not only reflect on their boys' lives but to look at their own upbringing and attitudes.
The workbook is filled with easy to understand problem-solving checklists. Although helping a child or teen modify his behavior can not be reduced to a simple "to do" list, the book provides good fodder for thought, reflection and action. Great starting point for anyone involved in a young man's life.

Took the test two days ago and here's my review!!
By reviewer--books of
This book contains a brief yet informative summary of the AP US history test. If you are just beginning to take the class, get this book and read through it once, then you may find the historic trends easier to understand once you get started on that 1000+ page textbook. It does a superb job of teaching the essay portion of the test, but the MC section seems to be designed to benefit only those willing to get a "3" or "4" (sorry no offense). The practice tests are complex, professionally-written, and somewhat similar to the actual test.
The essay questions are excellent and should be practiced rigorously in this book. Overall, a great book with a decent review and realistic practice tests.

EDIT: I received my score, it is a 5.

What a great review tool!
By Jessica Parij
I used this book as I was preparing for the AP US History exam and it's definitely the best review book out there. I read through my friends' Kaplans and Petersons and they just don't compare. The review is thorough, but doesn't bog you down with too much information, and the practice questions are about as close as you can get to the real exam. Next year, I plan on taking three more AP exams, and I wouldn't trust any other book other than the Princeton Review.

Buy for the Practice Tests
By Michelle M.
As a student in an AP US history class, this book does an adequate job of covering important facts and the wide variety of details needed to know on the AP exam. Can be hard to wade through, but so is the class ;D

WARNING:
this book is only for students who already have a basic knowledge of american history and, by itself, the book is not enough to get a good score on the exam!

SUGGESTION:
Buy used or photocopy the practice tests out of your friends book

Possibly the best "Christmas Carol" ever
By CC-in-VA
Many versions of Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" are actually abridgements (done more or less smoothly) but this version is complete and unabridged. Even if you think you are familiar with the book you may find upon reading this one that you previously had read a shortened version! The completeness of this volume would be reason enough to add it to your library, but the quality of the pages, typeface, and above all the lovely illustrations scattered throughout further commend it. I have bought copies for all 3 of my grown children--because every family deserves to own a complete version of this classic story and this one is the best I have ever seen.

Read the book the way Dickens wrote it..........
By Susan K. Schoonover
I hope all readers take time to read A CHRISTMAS CAROL in the original language Dickens used in the 1840's. Dickens' language remains humorous, descriptive and insightful and not inaccessible to most modern readers especially with the use of a good glossary. This is a great read aloud for families at Christmas time and also a great introduction to Dickens and other Victorian writers. Don't settle for an abridged version. Read this masterpiece the way it was intended

The Cost of Living, by Arundhati Roy

From the bestselling author of The God of Small Things comes a scathing and passionate indictment of big government's
disregard for the individual.

In her Booker Prize-winning novel, The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy turned a compassionate but unrelenting eye on one family in India. Now she lavishes the same acrobatic language and fierce humanity on the future of her beloved country. In this spirited polemic, Roy dares to take on two of the great illusions of India's progress: the massive dam projects that were supposed to haul this sprawling subcontinent into the modern age--but which instead have displaced untold millions--and the detonation of India's first nuclear bomb, with all its attendant Faustian bargains.

Merging her inimitable voice with a great moral outrage and imaginative sweep, Roy peels away the mask of democracy and prosperity to show the true costs hidden beneath. For those who have been mesmerized by her vision of India, here is a sketch, traced in fire, of its topsy-turvy society, where the lives of the many are sacrificed for the comforts of the few.

From Publishers Weekly
The author of the Booker Prize-winning novel The God of Small Things dons a pundit's hat in her second book, and it's an awkward fit. This slim volume offers two previously published magazine articles. "The Greater Common Good," which appeared in Outlook, an Indian magazine, argues against the building of a controversial dam on the Narmada River in India. Roy notes that 60% of the 200,000 people likely to be uprooted by the project are tribal people, many illiterate, who will be deprived of their original livelihoods and land. Drawing on studies and government and court documents, Roy criticizes the World Bank, the Indian government and a political system that favors interest groups at the expense of the poor. In the second essay, "The End of Imagination," a criticism of India's decision to test a nuclear bomb that was published in the Nation in September 1998, Roy asks why India built the bomb when more than 400 million Indians are illiterate and live in absolute poverty. It's a good question, but fully a fifth of the article is devoted to a friend telling Roy that she has become so famous that the rest of her life would be "vaguely unsatisfying"Awhich is a fair description of this book. Roy surely has meaningful things to say about India. But she is not yet nearly as accomplished a political critic as she is a novelist. This effort, marred by general attacks on "the system" and personal digressions that distract a reader from the substantive issues at hand, is cursory and na?ve. That Roy anticipates this criticism doesn't render it any less valid. (Oct.)

From Library Journal
The phenomenal success of Roy's Booker Prize winning first novel The God of Small Things (LJ 4/15/97) has metamorphosed her into an activist supporting unpopular causes. This book consists of two parts: "The Greater Common Good" attacks the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river in western India, while "The End of Imagination" denounces India's nuclear tests in May 1998. The Save the Narmada movement, a grass-roots, anti-dam movement that has been agitating for over a decade, believes that instead of being a solution to India's water and power shortages, the still-incomplete dam will cause immense distress owing to the displacement of 40 million people, the submergence of 245 villages, inequities in resettlement, and environmental disasters. Roy's polemical tract on their behalf, while not a dispassionate inquiry, raises some important questions about the real price of "development," whether in the form of big dams or bombs. From Kirkus Reviews
In her first non-fiction work, award winning novelist Roy (The God of Small Things, 1997) reveals the authoritarian paternalism of the Indian state that lies behind a mask of benevolence. To Roy, India with all its fissures and factions is a fictitious nation created by the state to legitimate itself. Once the fiction is in place, the state can justify its actions in the name of the common good no matter how injurious these actions may be in reality. So it is with Indias undertaking of massive dam and irrigation projects and its successful detonation of a nuclear bomb, the subjects respectively of the two essays in this volume. The second essay offers the bomb as an example of state arrogance and foolishness whose potential consequences are obvious and terrible. In the first essay, which will likely be more revelatory to American audiences, Roy focuses her attention on the Naramada valley, home to 325,000 people, mostly of minority tribes. When the building of a series of huge dams is completed the valley will flood and all will lose their homes, becoming, in a bloodless acronym, PAPs: Project Affected Persons. A whole way of life will end as PAPs are relocated to dismal camps or end up in urban slums. Roy clearly and bitingly demonstrates, however, that it is not at all clear the project will do what it is supposed to. It may use more electricity than it generates or destroy more farmland than it creates, and those who are to receive drinking water may never have a drop reach them. The Indian state goes on its haughty way, blithely dismissing all doubts. Yet the people of the Naramada valley have organized and resisted, and though the outcome is unclear, this resistance is what inspires Roy. This resistance, not the state, is the home of Indian democracy, and she urges the struggle to continue (royalties from the book are going to the organization heading this struggle). With eloquent anger and careful research, Roy expertly captures the faces of both folly and courage. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Masters of the Universe?
By George N. Wells
Ms. Roy captures the essence of the technological problems of the planet today. We humans like to think of ourselves as "Masters of the Universe." When, in fact, we are flawed creatures who do things without the wisdom to see the long-term consequences of our actions - be they building a dam or nuclear weapon.
It is not lost on this reader, that the "father" of the atomic bomb quoted the lines of Shiva when he first saw his weapon exploded - "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." We humans are good at destruction; sometimes it even looks like building.
While Ms. Roy's prose is a bit less poetic than that found in "The God of Small Things," her passion makes up for the linguistic power. She is calling out the leaders, not only of India, but also of the world, to reconsider the consequences of what they are doing to the earth and its peoples. All of these actions, of course, in the names of progress and national defense.
It is not likely that Ms. Roy's writings will change the governments. But perhaps they will open your eyes as they did mine, to the realities of what we are doing on and to this planet. At the beginning of the 21st century we are again looking at the exploitation of the earth that nurtures us to the point where it may no longer support us.

Brave & Universal - not just for Indians!
By AA
Arundhati Roy has a wonderful way of writing. This woman could write about absolutely anything at all and I think I will still enjoy it. She has a naturally earnest free flowing poetic yet precise language. She has the ability to choose her words so well as to get the exact picture or impression she wants us to see. Truly she paints with her words.
Roy used her amazing writing skills and sensitivity so very well in her fantastic work, The God of Small Things. Here she uses the same skills and more aiming primarily at her own people asking them to re-examine 2 strongly held views. As non-Indian I thoroughly enjoyed both essays of this book.
The first essay deals with the construction of river dams in India since the independence in 1947. Roy set about in a very systematic way to establish the true cost of the dams in terms of human suffering. She focused on one project in particular but her research was wide ranging and indeed she had to dig into several completed projects to establish true benefits and costs. Roy's central message is that the price paid by an oppressed native minority is way too high and the alleged benefits to India are low. Where this essay is truly universal, at least applicable to so many third world countries in the post colonial era, is in its research for a definition for her own country, identity and common good and modes of opposition to this common good! Roy was also highly unimpressed with the western approach to 3rd world development projects but her approach was a times too general and sweeping.
The Second article, probably far more universal, is the nuclear weapons article. Roy's analysis of the policies of the Congress party and the BJP nationalists leading to the 1998 explosions shows great insight and clarity of mind. She categorically opposes the bomb as weapon of peace and she totally rejects the overwhelming support of her people for the bomb and the Indian nuclear tests. Having traveled to India shortly after the Indian and Pakistani explosions I was horrified with the attitude of "our bomb was better than theirs" and this is the first work that I personally have seen that takes on this subject with such force. Roy's opposition leaves no prisoners behind. It is hard to overstate the courage of Roy on this issue given the level of tension between Hindu India and Islam within India itself and across the borders.
I strongly recommend this wonderfully written book to anyone interested in issues related to regional conflicts and postcolonial development.

History of the Conquest of Mexico (Modern Library Classics), by William H. Prescott

"It is a magnificent epic," said William H. Prescott after the publication of History of the Conquest of Mexico in 1843. Since then, his sweeping account of Cortés's subjugation of the Aztec people has endured as a landmark work of scholarship and dramatic storytelling. This pioneering study presents a compelling view of the clash of civilizations that reverberates in Latin America to this day.

"Regarded simply from the standpoint of literary criticism, the Conquest of Mexico is Prescott's masterpiece," judged his biographer Harry Thurston Peck. "More than that, it is one of the most brilliant examples which the English language possesses of literary art applied to historical narration. . . . Here, as nowhere else, has Prescott succeeded in delineating character. All the chief actors of his great historic drama not only live and breathe, but they are as distinctly differentiated as they must have been in life. Cortés and his lieutenants are persons whom we actually come to know in the pages of Pres-cott. . . . Over against these brilliant figures stands the melancholy form of Montezuma, around whom, even from the first, one feels gathering the darkness of his coming fate. He reminds one of some hero of Greek tragedy, doomed to destruction and intensely conscious of it, yet striving in vain against the decree of an inexorable destiny. . . . [Prescott] transmuted the acquisitions of laborious research into an enduring monument of pure literature."

Review
The sheer accumulation of substantiated detail is propelled forward by Prescott's unsparing identification with the fundamentally tragic nature of the conflict.... He has intuited that the "conquest" of Mexico was, in fact, the unsuccessful enterprise of grafting one civilization upon another. -- The Los Angeles Times Sunday Book Review, Neil Baldwin

About the Author

William Hickling Prescott, the renowned American historian who chronicled the rise and fall of the Spanish empire, was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on May 4, 1796. His grandfather had commanded colonial forces at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution; his father was a highly respected judge and philanthropist. Prescott was tutored in Latin and Greek by the rector of Trinity Church in Boston and entered Harvard in 1811. In a bizarre accident, Prescott was blinded in the left eye by a crust of bread thrown in a dining-hall fracas. He abandoned plans to study law but went on to graduate in 1814 having earned membership in Phi Beta Kappa. While traveling abroad the following year Prescott temporarily lost the sight in his right eye. With his vision permanently impaired, he aspired to the life of gentleman-scholar. Prescott launched a career as a man of letters in 1821 with an essay on Byron that appeared in the North American Review. Over the next two decades he contributed regularly to the prestigious Boston literary journal. His most important articles and reviews, including seminal pieces on the theory and practice of historical composition, were later collected in Biographical and Critical Miscellanies (1845) and Critical and Historical Essays (1850).

Under the influence of George Ticknor, a friend and mentor who taught European literature at Harvard, Prescott began learning Spanish in 1824. Engrossed by the history of Spain, he committed himself to tracing its development into a world power. Employing secretaries to read him manuscripts sent from Spanish archives, Prescott set about writing a work of sound scholarship that would also interest a general audience. A phenomenal memory allowed him to compose whole chapters in his mind during morning horseback rides. Later he recorded them on paper using a noctograph, a special stylus for the blind. More than a decade later he finished The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic (1837), which enjoyed tremendous critical and popular success on both sides of the Atlantic.

Prescott's fame gained him entrée into Spanish intellectual circles, greatly facilitating research on his next book, History of the Conquest of Mexico (1843), a sweeping account of Cortés's subjugation of the Aztec people. "Regarded simply from the standpoint of literary criticism, the Conquest of Mexico is Prescott's masterpiece," judged his biographer Harry Thurston Peck. "More than that, it is one of the most brilliant examples which the English language possesses of literary art applied to historical narration. . . . [Prescott] transmuted the acquisitions of laborious research into an enduring monument of pure literature." Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Daniel J. Boorstin agreed: "The enduring interest in Prescott's Conquest of Mexico comes less from his engaging survey of Aztec civilization than from his genius for the epic. . . . Though Prescott has been called the nation's first 'scientific historian' for his use of manuscript sources, he would live on as a creator of literature."

Prescott completed his pioneering study of Spanish exploits in the New World with the History of the Conquest of Peru (1847), a vivid chronicle of Pizarro's tumultuous overthrow of the Inca empire. "The Conquest of Peru represents an author's triumph over his materials," observed Donald G. Darnell, one of the historian's several biographers. "Prescott exploits to the fullest any opportunities for dramatic effects that history might provide him. . . . The description of the Inca civilization, particularly its wealth, the precise explanation of the cause of the conflict between the conquerors, and the depiction of the Spanish character—these together with the careful research, the sheer abun dance of anecdotes, and the exploitation of primary materials all contribute to the history's continuing popularity."

Prescott devoted his final years to chronicling the decline of the Spanish empire. He published The Life of Charles the Fifth after His Abdication (1856), a continuation of William Robertson's The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles the Fifth (1769), but only managed to finish the first three volumes of The History of the Reign of Philip the Second (1855-58). William H. Prescott died of a stroke at his home in Boston on January 29, 1859. In assessing his achievements, Daniel J. Boorstin wrote: "One of Prescott's greatest feats as a 'scientific' historian was to depict the scenes of his drama so vividly without ever having been there—for he never visited Spain, Mexico, or Peru. . . . Prescott created from the rawest of raw material, laboring under physical handicaps and displaying a single-minded courage with few precedents in the annals of literature. . . . He had to discover the landscape, conceive new heroes, and mark their own paths through time. The story of how he made his histories was itself a kind of epic."

I should have known better. The story was written in the 1800s, we know SO MUCH more about the real history of the Azteca. He even mentions how malaria was contacted because of swampy, humid areas. Now we know it's because of the dreaded mosquito. I didn't finish the book, but I will sometime in the future.

THE FAMED 19TH CENTURY HISTORIAN'S ACCOUNT OF CORTÉS AND MONTEZUMA
By Steven H Propp
William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859) was an eminent American historian. He wrote in the Preface to this 1843 book, "Although the subject of the work is, properly, only the Conquest of Mexico, I have prepared the way for it by such a view of the civilization of the ancient Mexicans ... If I shall have succeeded in giving the reader a just idea of the true nature and extent of the civilization to which the Mexicans had attained, it will not be labour lost." (Pg. xviii) He notes difficulty of his task, however: "his [Montezuma's] history is to be collected solely from Spanish writers... It is the hard fate of this unfortunate monarch, to be wholly indebted for his portraiture to the pencil of his enemies." (Pg. 220)

He states, "The tutelary diety of the Aztecs was the god of war... The soldier, who fell in battle, was transported at once to the regions of ineffable bliss... Every war, therefore, became a crusade; and the warrior, animated by a religious enthusiasm, like that of the ... Christian crusader ... courted... the imperishable crown of martyrdom. Thus we find the same impulse acting in the most opposite quarters of the globe... each earnestly invoking the holy name of religion in the perpetuation of human butchery." (Pg. 19)

He records "the popular traditions respecting Quetzalcoatl, that deity with a fair complexion and flowing beard, so unlike the Indian physiognomy, who... promised, on his departure, to return at some future day with his posterity." (Pg. 122) Later, Cortés "encouraged the idea that his own sovereign was the great Being indicated by Montezuma." (Pg. 242)

When Cortés and his men ordered Montezuma to leave his palace and threatened physical violence, Montezuma "consented to accompany the strangers---to quit the palace, whither he was never more to return. Had he possessed the spirit of the first Montezuma, he would have called his guards around him, and left his life-blood on the threshold, sooner than have been dragged a dishonoured captive across it. But his courage sank under circumstances. He felt he was the instrument of irresistible Fate!" (Pg. 275-276)

Prescott summarizes, "That a small body of men, like the Spaniards, should have entered the palace of a mighty prince, have seized his person in the midst of his vassals, have borne him off a captive to their quarters---that they should have put to an ignominious death before his face his high officers... and have crowned the whole by putting the monarch in irons like a common malefactor... in the very heart of his capital, surrounded by thousands and tens of thousands who trembled at his nod, and would have poured out their blood like water in his defence---that all this should have been done by a mere handful of adventurers, is a thing too extravagant, altogether too improbable, for the pages of romance! It is, nevertheless, literally true." (Pg. 279)

Prescott argues, "Yet we cannot regret the fall of an empire which did so little to promote the happiness of its subjects, or the real interests of humanity... the Aztecs were emphatically a fierce and brutal race, little calculated, in their best aspects, to excite our sympathy and regard..." (Pg. 504) He concludes, "The Indian empire was in a manner conquered by Indians. The Aztec monarchy fell by the hands of its own subjects, under the direction of European sagacity and science. Had it been united, it might have bidden defiance to the invaders. As it was, the capital was dissevered from the rest of the country... Its fate may serve as a striking proof, that a government, which does not rest on the sympathies of its subjects... must fall---if not... by violence from within, if not from without. And who shall lament their fall?" (Pg. 506)

Although written 170 years ago, this history is still an engrossing and informative one, which any students of this period will benefit from studying.

One of Our Greatest Works of Historical Art
By Ben Kilpela
This book is one of the greatest works of world literature, but it can be a deeply disturbing read. By turns, the heart races in outrage and sinks in sorrow at the retelling of the events surrounding Cortes's conquest of the Aztec Empire from 1519 to 1521. There has seldom been an event in history with greater drama, greater conflict, greater peril, and greater moral consequence. Though the conquest is not a turning point in world history, its events can help us fathom many of the most pressing and profound moral and political issues we face down to this day. Prescott tells the story of the conquest superbly, with depth, precision, elegance, sympathy, drama, and emotional power. There are few prose stylists as fine as William Hickling Prescott in the history of English literature, and this is not known widely enough. Many a swollen six-volume history from centuries past has become the province of scholars; few are the classic histories that still can command the attention of lay readers. This is one of them. Many lay readers and scholars testify that this book has lost none of its savor or substance. Prescott emulated Gibbon, that marvel of magnificence in English prose, but thankfully Prescott's style isn't quite as magnificently glorious as the historian's who laid out the momentous decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Prescott's prose stands a bit lower on the register than Gibbon's heroic grandeur; yet Prescott achieves a depth of perception, elegance, and insight that is matched by few writers in all of English literature. As with Gibbon, Prescott's sentences and paragraphs stand as works of art; they not are to be hurried through for the story only, but pondered with an expectation of almost unbounded discovery. Also like Gibbon, Prescott was a master of the subtle, sly aside and the telling tangent.
At the center of Prescott's story is the enthralling conquistador Hernan Cortes, that extraordinarily daring captain of the expedition to conquer the Aztecs; in two years, Cortes led a preposterously small band of Spanish soldiers across the Empire and succeeded, highly improbably, in toppling it. Is this one of the key moments of history? For Central America, certainly, but for world history probably not. Nonetheless, it is one of the most riveting stories of early modern times, and you should know it well. Moreover, our evaluations of the actions and ideas of Cortes and his men can help us understand what it means to be good, to toil as servants of the good, and to create a good society. It is easy to get furious with Cortes's band as we read of them fulfilling their audacious mission of conquest. It is easier still to morally condemn them. It could be that they deserve condemnation. But perhaps the matter deserves a very close look, and Prescott can help us examine and judge their actions better than any historian ever. In my view, there are three crucial events that demand our account: (1) the massacre at Cholula, (2) the Noche Triste, an escape of the Spaniards from Tenochtitlan at mid-conquest, and (3) the brutal siege of Tenochtitlan in the final act. Through these and the other events of the conquest, Prescott can guide us in evaluating our principles of morality, government, war, liberty, and religion, as well as the meaning of life and society. This book is a classic now, having been written some 150 years ago. Many histories and studies of the conquest have been written up to the present, but none matches Prescott's in the power and depth of its insights into human nature and society, and none matches it in the beauty and power of its prose. Prescott has much to say about why people behave as they do, about the power of religion, the thirst for gold and glory, the temptations of ambition, the rationalization of crimes and sin, and much, much more. Surely by now you realize that I cannot recommend this great history highly enough. It remains in print in several editions, which is a testament to its enduring appeal both to scholars and readers, and it is most deserving of all the attention it still receives.
