This book gets the job.
By A Customer
If you are looking for a quick, concise, and casually comprehensive overview of chemistry for the SAT II Subject test then I recommend this book. If you haven't taken a year of high school chemistry, then this book probably won't help. But if you have, or are enrolled in chem, going through this book will help you review important concepts and give you enough knowledge about the concepts you may not know yet to do well on those questions on the test. You don't need to know chemistry inside and out like the exhaustive Barron's SAT II book teaches you, just a concise and brief overview is what you need and this book gets the job done well!

Good, but not adequate
By A Customer
A lot of people told me that this book will cover the most of the exam. Well, they were right in some ways, but not all. I bought both Barron's and PR's, but neither of them were like the real one. This book was certainly way too easy compared with the real Chem exam. If you're looking for a high score like 700+, then I recommend buying another one along with this one, because it helped me with the concept on the first part of the exam. If you're confident with the basic concepts, then don't buy this book. It's repetitious and time-consuming for more advanced students.

Pretty Good...
By J Zhang
This book is written in an easy to understand manner and gives you just the stuff you need to know for the test. It is done in the fashion of a crash course on Introductory chemistry, topic by topic. However, if you know your stuff it isn't much help to you, because there are few practice questions to do. Use it as a review, or something to jog your memory. If you're looking for practice questions simulating the real SAT II, then I suggest you look for another book. Also this book is verbose and tedious at times. Beware of some minor typos.

Not Helpful
By Nick Preketes
You would like to think that Princeton Review would do a good job with something like this, but it's pretty miserable. It's obvious that they just hired some first year grad student to write it.

The organic section consists of a list of reactions with little to no explanation. No mechanisms are involved and it's just expected that you memorize all 50 some pages of mechanisms.

The physical section is absolutely miserable and they don't seem to want to stick to a sign convention when they talk about thermodynamics.

The analytical section is not comprehensive.

TERRIBLE
By chemskow
This book was of very little help. Do not use this to help prepare for the chemistry GRE. You are better off buying individual review books. There is too much pointless information and not enough detail on important topics. The amount of typos is outstanding! Don't do what I did. I read the reviews and asked myself "how bad could it possible be?". MUCH worse than I expected even after I had been warned by the other reviewers. This book is a waste of money.

Do not believe that this is a bad book, because it is not
By Laura Tociu
Do not believe that this is a bad book, because it is not. You cannot possibly expect it to contained detailed information, since then it would be thousands of pages long. Instead, it should be used as a guide to what you should review for the exam. For that it is amazing. I do not think it is disorganized at all, in fact, it presents disparate topics in a very unified and easy to understand manner. There were some topics that I never quite understood in class when I was taking Chemistry courses, but this book dumbed them down to me in a perfect way.

Use it as a condensed study guide (namely with your textbooks/ lecture notes/ the internet close by, further delving into the topics presented) and it will prepare you well, I am sure. There is a reason why there is almost NO Chemistry GRE prep material out there, and that is because it is very hard to make. So this book deserves praise even just for existing, although it may not be perfect.

Facing the Wind: A True Story of Tragedy and Reconciliation, by Julie Salamon

Robert and Mary Rowe’s second child, Christopher, was born with severe neurological and visual impairments. For many years, the Rowes’ courageous response to adversity set an example for other parents of children with birth defects. Then the pressures on Bob Rowe—personal and professional—took their toll, and he fell into depression and, ultimately, delusion. And one day he took a baseball bat and killed his wife and three children. Julie Salamon deftly avoids sensationalism as she tells the Rowes’ tragic story with intelligence, sympathy, and insight. Like all great literary journalism, Facing the Wind asks us to join its issues and examine our own lives and problems in the new, bright light that good writing always sheds.

From Publishers Weekly
This true-crime story reaches beyond the relatively narrow focus of the genre to ask painful and provocative questions about guilt and forgiveness. In 1978, Bob Rowe, an out-of-work Brooklyn lawyer, killed his two sons, his daughter and wife by bashing their heads in with a baseball bat. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and after several years in a mental institution was released. He later remarried and had another daughter. Although journalist Salamon (Net of Dreams) did not interview Rowe before his death in 1977, this expertly crafted account is informed by diligent research and interviews with his second wife, Colleen, as well as with a women's support group to which Rowe's first wife, Mary, had belonged. This group was made up of mothers whose children, like Rowe's son Christopher, were born with severe physical impairments. One of the strengths of Salamon's sensitive narrative is her depiction of these mothers and how they dealt with the strain of raising disabled children. The Rowe's seemingly good marriage and his deep involvement in Christopher's care made Mary's murder all the more incomprehensible to the women, who never forgave him. Salamon adequately details Rowe's depression and subsequent mental breakdown that preceded the killings. She also describes how he painfully built a new life and found Colleen, who forgave him for his past. After her husband's death, Colleen met with the members of Mary's support group. Salamon provides a riveting account of this meeting, where Colleen attempts to explain why she loved her husband, and the women try to understand how she could forgive him. National publicity. (Apr.) Forecast: Salamon is a contributor to the New York Times, so this title will be widely reviewed-and many of those reviews will be highly positive. This book will have legs, and strong blurbs from Ted Conover and Anne Fadiman, among others, will give it a first big step.

From Library Journal
This is the haunting story of Robert Rowe, a respected lawyer, loving husband, doting father and multiple murderer. It is also the story of the mothers of disabled children who came together at Brooklyn's Industrial Home for the Blind as members of a support group before the heyday of self-help gurus and groups for every affliction. Rowe was one of the few fathers actively involved with the group, and he was highly admired by the mothers. The book reveals Rowe's slide into mental illness, which led to his murdering his entire family, and his journey in life after the murder. For anyone interested in how parents cope with disabled children or how mental illness can strike anyone, this book will be a fascinating read. Well written and heavily researched, it clearly demonstrates Salamon's (The Christmas Tree, LJ 9/15/96) prowess and her journalistic roots. Readers will not easily forget this tale. Recommended, especially for true crime/psychology collections. Karen Sandlin Silverman, Ctr. for Applied Research, Philadelphia

From The New Yorker
In February, 1978, Bob Rowe, a lawyer and apparently devoted family man, murdered his wife and three children by staving in their skulls with a baseball bat. The Rowes' community was particularly horrified. One of the Rowe children, twelve-year-old Christopher, had been born blind, nearly deaf, and brain-damaged, and Bob and his wife, Mary, seemed to be committed to his welfare. Salamon's book began as a report on a support group that Mary had belonged to; then Bob Rowe's crime came up, and it eventually took over the project. There are two narratives here: the shocking crime, and then an equally shocking second act, in which Rowe avoids prison as a result of an insanity plea and starts a new life. Salamon doesn't shy away from the larger questions, both personal and institutional, but, to her great credit, she refuses to entirely abandon her original subject, and Mary Rowe's friends in the support group serve as a kind of Greek chorus.

Deeply thought-provoking
By Charlotte Vale-Allen
Julie Salamon is a fine journalist. The Devil's Candy is one of the best behind-the-scenes books ever written about Hollywood movie-making. She has the rare ability to observe and narrate the details of what is happening without ever intruding upon the facts by pushing her personal opinions at the reader. That is also true of this highly affecting tale, even though Salamon herself is actually involved in the final portion of the book.
I found Facing The Wind fascinating but heavy-going. I don't think there was any other possible way for the author to get the story told, and to compel us to consider the horror inherent in knowing a man who, in the depths of emotional anguish and extreme mental turmoil, killed his family. In examining this "life after death," Salamon puts a positively biblical dilemma on the table for us to consider: Does a man who takes the lives of his family while mentally ill have the right to a "second" life upon returning to a sane state? Does he have the right to practise law? And how/why does a young woman not only marry this man but live with the truth of what he's done?
The first section, dealing with the parents of blind and/or disabled children is informative, harrowing and inspiring; everyone comes fully to life, which is why the second and third parts of the book work so well: because we've been fully introduced to all the people and their children. We've also had a crash course in the monstrous difficulties encountered as the parent(s) of disabled children.
This is a book that will have you debating with yourself for hours, even days after you've finished. It is a very important book, not only because it offers in-depth insight into just how hard it is to be one of those parents, but also because it helps put "normal" parenting into a different perspective--just possibly making us feel that much luckier at having "whole" children.
Most highly recommended.

The ultimate moral dilemma.
By mirope
There is no suspense about the facts of the story that forms the basis of this book. Bob Rowe, a loving husband and father, beat his wife and three children to death with a baseball bat in 1978. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and served approximately three years in a criminal psychiatric ward. Upon his release he remarried and had another child. This book isn't your typical true crime book. Julie Salamon isn't interested in finding out the truth about what happened - that's already widely known. Instead, the book is an invitation to consider some of the most difficult moral issues in our society: when does insanity excuse a crime?, should mentally ill patients be punished as well as treated?, is it possible to forgive the most horrendous crimes? Frustratingly, there are no definite answers and this case doesn't make the debate any clearer.
Salomon clearly did an excellent job of interviewing a wide variety of people who knew Bob Rowe before and after his crime. All points of view are represented, including unforgiving friends and colleagues and Rowe's extremely sympathetic second wife. Because the Rowe's second son, Christopher, was born severely disabled, the original Rowe family was intimately involved with a support group for parents facing similar challenges with their children. This group was the genesis of Salomon's book, and there is a lot of focus on these brave women and their relationship with Bob and Mary Rowe. Given her reliance upon the memories of these women, it is not surprising that one of Salomon's underlying assumptions is that the strain of raising Christopher somehow contributed to Bob Rowe's breakdown and subsequent murder of his family. I personally thought this was off base. It seemed clear to me that Bob's breakdown was precipitated by his professional failures which existed quite apart from his home life. The assistant DA had it right - this was an ego crime. Bob Rowe was so self-centered that he killed his family so they wouldn't have to witness HIS disgrace as a failed professional. All in all, I found Rowe to be a not very sympathetic character, and I think he offers a persuasive example of why criminals who are found not guilty by reason of insanity should be required to serve the same number of years in a psychiatric facility as they would have to serve if they had been convicted and sent to prison. A finding of not guilty by reason of insanity shouldn't be a get-out-of-jail-free card.
An interesting read that raises as many questions as it answers.

A look at the limits of love, grace and forgiveness...
By Kcorn
How would any of us react if someone we thought we knew well, a respected member of our community, suddenly beat his family to death with a baseball bat? And how would we react if we knew he'd remarried years later and started a new family? As riveting as these questions may be, they are only part of what made this book so fascinating to me. What made it unforgettable was how it made me think about the limits of love and forgiveness and how several families were put to the test in circumstances as horrendous as this. Please be aware that this is NOT your usual true crime book, although it is based on true events and the writer does try to make sense of a crime most of us would consider senseless- the murder of 4 members of a family, the Rowes, by the husband/father of that family, a man considered by friends and neighbors to be a loving and attentive parent and spouse. But it goes beyond the murder to give a riveting, detailed portrait of several families and how they lived both before and after this crime tore apart their community. These families had one thing in common - all of them had children with physical or emotional disabilities and the mothers in those families belonged to a support group. The author of this book, Julie Salamon, shows how each person was affected by the challenge of having a handicapped child and how they turned to the Rowes for guidance and inspiration. While some readers might find this part of the book irrelevant and even tedious, I did not. It not only made me think about the unusual stresses faced by families who have children with special needs but it revealed the Rowe family through the eyes of those closest to them. The Rowes were seen as role models and ideals, a family that was dealing with their disabled son as best they could, even better than many others would. The supposed stability of this family is what makes the murders so much more shocking and the author of this book doesn't hesitate to reveal the events leading up to the murder and the spiraling depression that overwhelms John Rowe. But she doesn't stop there. She goes on to show his life after institutionalization, his remarriage and eventual death - and then the meeting of his 2nd wife and the women who'd been close to his first wife. Many of them are still angry, baffled and judgmental. I won't reveal the ending of this book to you but will say if you have the willingness to stick with this one, I think you'll find it will force you to think about grace and forgiveness in even the worst circumstances. I admit I'm not sure I don't understand a man like John Rowe but I'll never forget him or his family and I'll be thinking about this book and the issue it raised for a long time.

Of the eighty-one years of her life, Nadezhda Mandelstam spent nineteen as the wife of Russia's greatest poet in this century, Osip Mandelstam, and forty-two as his widow. The rest was childhood and youth." So writes Joseph Brodsky in his appreciation of Nadezhda Mandelstam that is reprinted here as an Introduction. Hope Against Hope was first published in English in 1970. It is Nadezhda Mandelstam's memoir of her life with Osip, who was first arrested in 1934 and died in Stalin's Great Purge of 1937-38. Hope Against Hope is a vital eyewitness account of Stalin's Soviet Union and one of the greatest testaments to the value of literature and imaginative freedom ever written. But it is also a profound inspiration--a love story that relates the daily struggle to keep both love and art alive in the most desperate circumstances.

Amazon.com Review
Nadezhda means "hope" in Russian. And Nadezhda Mandelstam, wife of Osip Mandelstam, one of the greatest Russian poets of the 20th century, is aptly named, for it is hope alone that seems to have buoyed her strength during very trying times. In this, the first of two volumes of her memoirs, she offers a harrowing account of the last four years she spent with her late husband. She re-creates in terse, stripped-to-the-bone sentences the atmosphere of intense paranoia that enveloped Russia's literary intelligentsia. In 1933, Osip had written a lighthearted satire ridiculing Stalin. It proved to be a 16-line death sentence. Nadezhda recalls the night the secret police came for him: "There was a sharp, unbearably explicit knock on the door. 'They've come for Osip,' I said." He was arrested, interrogated, exiled, and eventually rearrested. Nadezhda chronicles each turn of event, describing her feelings of heartbreak and joy with self-effacing discipline. Not only does Mandelstam write with the vitality and insight of the classic Russian novelists, she is far too selfless to write an account of her own travails. Instead, she acts as witness to a society's. Similarly, although Osip's mind became unbalanced by his ordeal in prison, his spirit remained unbroken; it is this liberating, imaginative force that Nadezhda celebrates in Hope Against Hope. --Lilian Pizzichini, Amazon.co.uk

Review
"        Nothing one can say will either communicate or affect the genius of this book. To pass judgment on it is almost insolence--even judgment that is merely celebration and homage."
--George Steiner, The New Yorker

"        Surely the most luminous account we have--or are likely to get--of life in the Soviet Union during the purges of the 1930's."
--Olga Carlisle, The New York Times Book Review

"        No work on Russia which I have recently read has given me so sensitive and searing an insight into the hellhouse which Russia became under Stalin as this dedicated and brilliant work on the poet Mandelstam by his devoted wife."
--Harrison E. Salisbury

One of my top 10 books

Presents an image of Russia as profound and gripping as Dostoevsky (only it's a memoir, not fiction). Fascinating portrait of one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. One of the 10 books which have meant the most to me since I began reading 40 years ago.

A fascinating look at Russia shortly after the revolution.
By A Customer
Highly recommended reading. This is a detailed but very readable account of the years following the revolution as recalled by the wife of one of Russia's leading poets. It is a witty, frank, and intelligent analysis of conditions that contrast so starkly with the premise of the revolution - freedom and equality for all people.

The world was not worthy of the Mandelstams
By Christopher W. Coffman
Only a process that is very beautiful and very terrible could produce this book: the anguish of two human souls being tormented by a cruel, fiendishly clever, and virtually all-powerful State determined to murder both the body and soul of its victims. Whether we deserve to benefit as readers from the terrible tempering endured by the poet Osip Mandelstam and his widow Nadezhda Mandelstam is a matter that can be easily determined: we do not deserve it. We are not worthy of the Mandelstams. They belong to a very select group of all the human beings who have ever lived, most of whom we will never know. Thanks to her memoir, we do know Nadezhda and Osip.

If Osip's great characteristic was his commitment to truth, Nadezhda's was her endurance (if this sounds dismissive recall that the New Testament repeatedly includes endurance as one of a short list of authentic signs of the divine Spirit). Her personal survival made possible the survival of (most) of Osip's poetry, and of the story of their lives, preserved in this unique memoir.

Wordsworth defined poetry as "emotion recollected in tranquility", and this memoir has something deeper than tranquility to it, a profound serenity, a luminous sadness, a fusion of love and truth which is the pivot on which human history revolves.

It is clear from reading this book that Osip was one those described in the 11th chapter of Hebrews as those "of whom the world was not worthy".

What better way to understand the industrial scale barbarisms of the twentieth century than to read about how they were observed and interpreted through the sensibilities of great poets and writers? Perhaps because of the relative brevity of the "Thousand Year Reich", we have had far more accounts from Hitler's victims than from Lenin and Stalin's victims. But the ones that did survive from the Soviet Union, not just HOPE AGAINST HOPE but works by Ginzburg, Brodsky, and Solzhenitsyn, are testaments of the human spirit of the same order as those written by witnesses to the Holocaust.

But the significance of HOPE AGAINST HOPE is not primarily its historical account of the Stalinist system, but its depiction of cosmic injustice and the possibility--even in the worst circumstances--for some kind of ultimate triumph of truth and integrity and decency and love.

I doubt that a person picking up this book on a whim will read it through, unless, without knowing it, they have been preparing themselves for years to understand what Osip and Nadezhda have to tell us about ourselves and about the human potential for choosing truth and for acting with moral courage. That was true for me. I bought this book twenty years ago, and although I started it a couple of times, I have only just read it after all that time it has been on my shelves. Paradoxically, although it's a life-changing book, perhaps one's life has to have already changed, or begun to change, before one can engage with it.

There is so much to reflect on in HOPE AGAINST HOPE. It is clear, for example, that although he died at the age of 46 in one of Stalin's camps, Osip was spiritually far advanced of the level achieved by Nadezhda herself in old age as she writes this memoir. She faithfully reports her long-dead husband's remarks and opinions without, in many cases, quite understanding them. This is to be expected: what is anybody to make of an observation such as the following: "Although [Osip] did not seek happiness, he described everything he valued in terms of pleasure and play: 'Thanks to the wonderful bounty of Christianity, the whole of our two-thousand-year-old culture is the setting of the world free for play, for spiritual pleasure, for the free imitation of Christ.'"? [page 267]

One last comment about HOPE AGAINST HOPE is the perspective it provides for reading and evaluating other books on the period. HOPE AGAINST HOPE is an almost Biblically rigorous metric for ethical and moral decision. Stimulated by this memoir, I've been reading or re-reading LIFE AND FATE, Bulgakov's diaries and letters collected as MANUSCRIPTS DON'T BURN, Bulgakov's novel THE MASTER AND MARGARITA, Schklovsky's THEORY OF PROSE, Montefiore's YOUNG STALIN, and a fascinating biography by Tom Reiss of the early Stalin biographer Essad Bay, who was actually a Jewish resident of Baku named Lev Nussenbaim. All of these books read differently in the pure light of HOPE AGAINST HOPE; behaviour and poses which seem plausible and even praiseworthy simply look inadequate against the standard set by the Mandelstams.

Everything, everybody, looks inadequate.

excellent introduction to the names of body parts
By Jim Carson
This is one of my daughter's favorite books because it's very involving in a physical and non-threatening way. You read the text, you show her the movement, she sees the movement depicted, and does it. She had lots of fun and was very interested in learning the names of various body parts.
This is a wonderful book, but not before a nap or bedtime. For that, I'd recommend the related Elmo book "Quiet Time."

This is our second copy of this book!
By Amazon Customer
I ordered a second copy of this book after the first one was destroyed by rain! We used to read it to my oldest daughter and decided to buy it again after our third child was born... not only does it teach different parts of the body, it is a great way to get your kids moving!

Great interactive book for toddlers
By Vicki Britt
Elmo and his friends perform various easy to imitate actions in their muppet exercise class. My two year old loves to follow along and do each step like 'honk her nose' and 'rub her tummy'. It's a great book for 1-3 year olds.

The Time of Our Time (Modern Library Paperbacks), by Norman Mailer

Norman Mailer's The Time of Our Time is a giant retrospective, a rich, boisterous portrait of our times seen through the fiction and reportage of one of America's greatest writers.

Mailer selected and edited the contents of this work to create an ongoing narrative of events large and small that have shaped America over the last fifty years.  Included are passages from The Naked and the Dead, The Deer Park, An American Dream, The Armies of the Night, The Executioner's Song, Ancient Evenings, and Harlot's Ghost as well as portraits of Ernest Hemingway, Dorothy Parker, Truman Capote, JFK, Marilyn Monroe, Lee Harvey Oswald, Madonna, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and Richard Nixon as they appeared in some of his best magazine pieces.  How readable is the result!  It is as if one is being drawn into a fabulous novel with extraordinary characters, real and fictional, who appear and reappear through the years until a vast mural of America as a nation comes into focus, full of follies and blunders, surprisingly elegant and often crazy--tragic in its losses and large in its triumphs.

On display here are Mailer's enormous energies, his vast curiosity, and his powers of delineation.  Here too are his errors of judgment and deed, both personal and literary.  As a writer, Mailer eschews all limits.  He goes at the world like a tiger.  What will surprise many readers of The Time of Our Time is what a shrewd and stylish tiger he has been.

Amazon.com Review
Compiling an anthology of one's own work can be a tricky business. Norman Mailer, of course, first committed this act of literary cannibalism back in 1959, when he assembled a brilliant collage of stories, journalism, essays, and poetry, Advertisements for Myself . Now, 50 years after the publication of his first novel, Gore Vidal's favorite sparring partner has put together another, more massive anthology, advertising not only himself but what we might call (paraphrasing Frost) his lover's quarrel with American life. "Over the course of years," Mailer writes in his foreword, "most of us compose in the privacy of our minds a social and cultural history of the years through which we have passed." True enough. But Mailer's history of the American Imperium has always been public--extremely public--and in The Time of Our Time he attempts to get it all into a single book.

Surely this sense of himself as the republic's recording angel accounts for the structure of Mailer's anthology: rather than arranging the excerpts by date of composition, he groups them by the historical era they describe. His 1963 polemic about the Bay of Pigs, for example, appears alongside his cloak-and-dagger reconstruction of the same event from Harlot's Ghost (1991). Fiction and fact lie cheek-by-jowl and eventually become impossible to tell apart. Here is the fulfillment of a project that Mailer began decades ago with such cunning hybrids as Armies of the Night. Yet this enormous volume shouldn't be read merely as a hand-tooled work of history. It is also the record of a phenomenal literary career, documenting Mailer's initial triumphs, his adrenaline-infused masterpieces of the late 1960s, hyperbolic stinkers like Marilyn and Ancient Evenings, and the astringent sorrow and awe of The Executioner's Song, which marked his return to form in 1979 after a long fallow period. Who but this loudmouthed, elegant, shrewd, and invariably excessive author would claim that his time--i.e., his accounting of it--is essentially our time? And who else could even begin to make such a claim stick? The list is a short one indeed.

From Library Journal
How to sum up 50 years of writing? Mailer's 31 books since 1948?some great, some infuriating or silly, but none of them safe?have held him a consistently high place among postwar American writers; in between his novels, his charismatic accounts of political conventions, prize fights, demonstrations, and moon landings effected a sea-change in magazine journalism, launching a thousand self-referential copycats. No subject ever seemed outside Mailer's swaggering intelligence as he evolved from young war-novelist to Existential essayist riffing above the cultural storms. Mailer doesn't need to stake his claim as a novelist or social critic: This sprawling reader does both, following Mailer's two careers by presenting novel excerpts set chronologically and thematically among his most memorable nonfiction, right up to his account of the 1996 campaign. In another half-century, will he be remembered as a great novelist or a gifted man of letters who divided his talent? Readers who don't balk at this collection's heft (1279 pages) may decide for themselves. This compilation is an ego indulgence, but even Mailer's indulgences are lucid and surprising. Recommended, but not essential.?Nathan Ward, "Library Journal"

From Booklist
Issued as a commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Mailer's first novel, The Naked and the Dead, and weighing in at about the size of the Manhattan phone book, this retrospective anthology contains excerpts of exemplary works, personally selected by the great writer himself. The compilation is creatively organized; in looking back over his oeuvre, Mailer, as he posits in his, not surprisingly, brilliant introduction, realized its thematic thread is his abiding interest in writing about America. Consequently, he has positioned the pieces in this collection so that each one "appears in accordance with the year it refers to rather than the year in which it was written." Thus, as we read excerpts from Mailer's fiction and nonfiction, things are purposefully out of chronological order of composition but ultimately in perfect order in terms of overall effect; the reader witnesses Mailer's reactions to almost every step of America's evolving political and social conditions over the past 50 years. Excerpts range from a portrait of Dorothy Parker that every reader will enjoy to a segment of his novel Ancient Evenings, which many did not enjoy. A brain, a talent, a rascal, and an observer: Mailer is all these, and the mix of these elements results here in a monument, not to his ego, but to his high place in American letters. Brad Hooper

Mailer's Greatest Hits--But Not For Readers Unfamiliar with Mailer's Work
By Kevin M. Derby
"The Time of Our Time" gathers together some of Norman Mailer's best writings but, unlike some "greatest hits" collections from writers, it is not an introduction. It is 1,300 pages-way too long to be an introduction. What Mailer offered in this work, a celebration of both his 75th birthday and his 50 years in publication, is an chronology of American life from World War Two to Clinton winning a second term in 1996--with a look at ancient Egypt and Jesus hanging on as an afterthought. Mailer offers slices of his novels, interviews with famous figures and his own, reports of political conventions, thoughts on boxing matches, a look at Watergate, arguments with feminists, reports on the JFK assassination, a glimpse at Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe and other writings. It's a haunting snapshot of the chaos, passion and turmoil of the last half of the 20th century in America. A parade of the great and near great march through: Eugene McCarthy, Mailyn Quayle, Gary Gilmore, Salman Rushdie, Abbie Hoffman, Nelson Rockefeller, Madonna, Gore Vidal, Neil Armstrong, a bullfighter named "El Loco", Floyd Patterson. There are strange moments and one wonders where Mailer was in the 80s. It's telling that Ronald Reagan pops up in the political drama of 1968 but not as president while George H. W. Bush pops up as the main figure in two essays. Mailer fans will wonder why some parts of his books are included but not others-did we need to revisit the detour in "Harlot's Ghost" to Uruguay again? Why didn't Mailer include the start of "Harlot's Ghost" as Harry Hubbard has a harrowing night in Maine? Why are none of the screenplays here? Why so little of "Naked and the Dead"? Any fan will have problems with a given "greatest hits" collection be it U2's best songs or Tennyson's best poems or a collection of the greatest Yankees games ever. This work is no introduction to Mailer but it is a comprehensive look into the minds and craft of one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century.

Imperfect Brilliance
By A Customer
Norman Mailer has had a radical trajectory through the course of his career, and now, at age 75 with fifty years as a professional writer behind him, a summary collection is the fashion, and "The Time of Our Time" is the door stopper through which posterity should judge either his ascension, or decline in our literary Olympus. It's amazing, actually , how Mailer has controlled the course of criticisim of his work, as he did with "Advertisements for Myself" and later with the "Prisoner of Sex", both books through which his aesthetics were linked with a peculiarly Maileresque cosmology. One might despise Mailer and his philosophy, but a critic was still trapped discussing the work through the author's obsessions. And that is the mark of brilliance, Mailer could get is readers to talk about things he wanted to speak to, because his language is strangely persuasive, at his high point, even as it addresses the dark and obscene corners of the imagination, and the baser instincts of American power. "The Time of Our Time'again makes us consider his entire career through Mailer's filter, and understandably, it can be aggravating for someone expecting an easy in to the body of work. But it gives us the rewards, with generous selections form his best work, "Naked and the Dead", Armies of the Night", "Executioner's Song","An American Dream"--and like wise long excerpts from slighter efforts, like "Gospel According to the Son" and his recent Picasso biography. What there is is an an impressive reach over the five decades that he's been in the public eye, an early brashness turning into a combative and provocative brilliance that at times trips over it's own eloquence that later turned into thoughtful , epic scale story telling through which the previous ego centric prose vanished behind the tragedy writ in the Gary Gilmore saga. It's difficult not to be impressed with the range of Mailer's topics, in fiction, journalism, and essa! ys--World War 2 in the Pacific, Moon Landings, Black power, Women's Rights, Hunting, Reichian sexuality, the failure of Marxism, The Kennedy Assasination, Ancient Egypt, masculinity and American Literature, the dread of Modern architecture, the real meaning of the right wing, Boxing--and while Mailer at times seems breathless and throat clearing in his writing, that he's spreading a style too thin to cover the feeling that he's , for the moment, is bereft of anything interesting to say, you note the way he changes tact, changes styles, and ushers in another period of solid books that stand as his strongest."The Time of Our Time" provides an over long reflection of a career that has been victim of the author's proclaimed desire to be the champ of his generation, but it also gives us a chance to appreciate a brilliant talent that found expression in spite of Mailer's the self-annihilating quirks. Controversial, problematic, self-absorbed, but quintessientially American, and one of the best witnesses we could have had for the second half of the century.
