Excellent, Superb, Concise!

As a sophomore taking AP World History, I know first-hand that there is a lot of information to memorize and understand before taking the exam. Myself overwhelmed, I purchased this book two months before the exam, hoping to gain confidence and to consolidate my knowledge of world history into a clearer, more organized understanding of what I would need to know for the exam.
While I would assume that this book is best when used with a year-long course, I'd even say that it could be used for independent study. True, this book does not delve into the unnecessary details of each event in history, for if it did it would be thousands of pages long and would likely accomplish little more than a dense textbook does. However, all major events are covered, along with every major civilization and occurrence.
Additionally, the Princeton Review managed to employ the use of every-day vocabulary to make difficult topics much easier to conquer.
The use of bolding to emphasize the most important names, terms, and events really helped me to organize my own knowledge and to focus on the most important information.
I have skimmed other AP World History review books, such as Peterson's and Barron's, but I do feel that the Princeton Review's is the most helpful and conveniently written.
Overall, this book has truly helped me to feel more confident and prepared for the exam. It has proven an invaluable learning tool for me, and hopefully it will help me to reach my ultimate goal on the AP World History Exam.

five reasons for a five star book

Ok...

1. First and foremost, its easy and actually intersting (*gasp! imagine that)to read. The author writes in very casual/ informal manner so you don't have to interpret the usual academic style of writing found in most history textbooks. Plus there are pictures! which help speed the reading (bascailly maps and charts which are great if your a visual learner)

2. This book is organized. Not only does each chapter ( chapters are split into the major time periods,so its in loose chronological order) have an outline that gives you a heads up on what your about to read, but theres also a summary in the end of each chap. explaining the overall social, ecomonic ect.. developments of the world. which leads to my third reason...

3. The author understands that you (or whoevers using this book) are going to be taking the World history AP exam, meaning that for three hours of that dreaded day you will be writing three essays ( one being the change over time) that will test how well you understand the BIG PICTURE (this is, after all WORLD history), not just specific facts. Princeton does a super job referring back on past events when it explains, for example "current" movements such as the Rennisance, so that you understand the cause-effect.

4. The princeton book also anticipates the compare/ contrast providing sample compare/contrst Q and A blurbs scattered throughtout the book that correlate with what your reading..for example when it talks about russia in the 1400's it has a blurb contrasting Russia and western europe and when it explains industrial revolution in Europe, it has a blurb comparing the IR in Europe and Japan...so very very helpful in seeing how and why things relate/ or don't.

5. The book has 2 practice tests. So it doesn't have six like some of the others but the tests have QUALITY in that the questions are very similar to those i encountered on the exam. Plus, they have detailed explanations of why the answer is right AND why the others are wrong.

so...now that you've spent 10 min. reading my review STOP WASTING YOUR TIME AND PURCHASE THE BOOK!

oh..and if your wondering how i did... i passed...........................................WITH FLYYYING COLORS!!!

A REALLY GOOD REVIEW GUIDE!

Today I took the AP World History Exam for 2004. Thanks to this book, I felt like I had ABSORBED world history into my brain. It provides a very good detailed AND easy to understand review. However I feel that I crammed in the last review pages of this book in on the last minute so I couldn't learn all of the info. But overall, if you don't procrastinate, this is an EXCELLENT study guide. It also provides two practice tests and some really good advice on how to bust through the essay questions in an organized way. Plus, it includes some sample essay questions. I would highly recommend buying this book.

Gordon Marino is professor of philosophy, Boldt Distinguished Chair in the Humanities, and director of the Hong Kierkegaard Library at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He was research fellow at the Kierkegaard Biblioteket in Copenhagen for three years. He is also co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to Kierkegaard and author of Kierkegaard in the Present Age.

"I Am" Never Meant So Much Before

I read a good chunk of this text for my German Existentialism class and will absolutely be reading the rest of it on my own. Marino does an excellent job compiling a wide range of existentialist thought and adding short, concise introductions to each philosopher. Even more difficult philosophers like Heidegger and Kierkegaard are made approachable by careful selection from their major works. For people approaching existentialism for the first time I would suggest this book in addition to William Barrett's The Irrational Man, the latter giving a better groundwork for the entire philosophy and Marino's text providing some of the best and most vivid examples of existentialist philosophy.

Existentialism is not for the meek. The texts are difficult and many of the questions they raise may result in life altering answers. For those willing to take the plunge this should not be a deterent, but merely a bump in the road. Marino has selected pieces that can at first seem utterly baffling, but with careful readings (Yes, readings. Things get easier the second time!) all of them are accessible and the benefits and real world applications (Existentialism pops up everywhere--movies, tv, music, art, politics, religion, etc. It is, after all, about existence!) of existentialism are impossible to measure.

Unexpected Meanings

If you have ever wondered about the universal need for us to find meaning in being, this book is a fine start to launching a personal journey. It is a remarkable piece of scholarship wherein Professor Marino superbly accomplishes the three tasks of a master teacher: relevance, erudition, and invitation.

Since nothing can be more relevant that the meaning of life, and existentialism posits that such meanings are feats of human alchemy (creating something from nothing), the ideas under review are nothing short of an amazing intellectual asdventure into the worlds of erudition (key passages from esistential writers), biography (tumbnail descriptions of the writers' lives) and an invitation to explore a stream of philosophical thought which includes Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, de Unamundo y Juego, Heidegger, Satre, de Beauvoir, Camus and Ellison. Students and members of the educated public may recognize some of these names, but many may have never engaged these thinkwers in a sustained manner. Here is your chance to discover what is happening in philiosophy departments. If your field is one of the social sciences, the work serves as a vital reference book--a source of insight and an effectivwe way to reflect on one's previous learning experiences.

Professor Morino's Introduction, alone, is worth the price of the book because he, like most of us, initially turned to philosophy to seek "answers", but discovered that ideas are powerful and are themselves a way of life. It is a sheer joy to follow his journey in this domain becaue he implicitly shows his enthusiasm for this material through his careful selections. For sociologists, there is a beautiful gem in the unexpected field of research methodology: the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl, which is based on the study of experience itself, permits ethnography (the direct observation of, and participation in, different life-worlds) to be seen as an existential project. That never occurred to me, but it certainly explains why those of us who conduct such research often leave our studied scenes with a fantastic store of experiences and insights that can persist for decades--long after one's fieldnotes have turned yellow.

The reason is that when you participate in a life-world that is initially alien to you, one learns to see even the commonplace in ways that are neither expected, nor anticipated: a form of discovery that forever changes and enriches one's life. As such, meanings are imparted that would be otherwise absent, or unknowable. Many cannot, due to lack of training or opportunity, or due to the inherent riasks and time involved, actually conduct ethnographic research. But any reader with the inclination and the curiosity can Explore Professor Marino's journey into a world that they would likely otherwise never know. That is both time well spent, and a risk worth taking, in my view. It may even prove to be meaningful, something that would doubtless delight many of the thinkers whose works are presented in this fine volume.

I exist only to review this book

So, maybe through no fault of its own, I find this book EXTREMELY difficult to read. I tried on several occasions to engage in what was being said, but found myself glazing over and losing interest entirely. I had much better luck reading Existentialism For Dummies. I don't consider myself extremely intelligent, but I do think I have a better-than-average ability to understand most new things and possess a great deal of common sense. Having said this, I found this book to be so... I can't even put it into words. In other words, if you are looking for an introduction to existentialism, this isn't your book!! Seriously...try Existentialism For Dummies (also sold on Amazon) and you'll actually walk away feeling like you've learned something.

Captivating

During a recent visit to Sagamore Hill on Long Island (the home of the Roosevelts), this book caught my eye because it gave a such a different perspective of Roosevelt history. Though I am now only about 3/4 of the way through, I cannot say that I am at all disappointed. It reads like a novel and is extremely well written. I cannot put it down. While it is true that there are other books which better cover the details of TR's colorful political career (Sylvia J. Morris's husband's books accomplish this) and even TR's earlier family history (try "Mornings on Horseback" by David McCullough for this), this book is must for those interested in the story of Edith and her remarkable family. Also, the story does have a great deal of romance and some poignancy -- particularly in the death of TR's first wife, Alice Lee, and his troubled relationship with his daughter, Alice's namesake. I agree with one of the other reviewer's -- Edith's story would make a marvelous motion picture.

Why hasn't there been a movie made on her romance/marriage?

Her lifelong romance with Theodore Roosevelt is certainly the stuff that films (or at the very least, TV movies) are made of. She never stopped loving the brilliant, bellicose, captivating, exasperating "boy" she had fallen in love with at a very young age. She helped mold him into a man. How two strong-willed persons of such opposing personalities thrived in such a successful marriage is even more reason why their story in film would be interesting. If Edith, certainly one of the most private historical figures in our country's history, had not the burned thousands of letters from her "Teedie"/Theodore (wishing to keep their lifetime of thoughts and passions to themselves), their romance might be up there with John and Abigail. TR also destroyed most of the letters from "Edie"/Edith because of Edith's constant pleading to him to do so.
What has survived through thousands of letters that friends and relatives did not destory and through Edith's 40+ years of private diaries (left to her daughter Ethel) is a portrait of a iron-willed, intelligent, passionate lady who survived many family crises and lived through enough U.S. political history for a couple of high school textbooks.
She was often the mother AND the father of her large household of children and pets as TR would often leave to go on hunting trips, safaris, and political campaigns. She ran the household in every area mostly because she had to get control of the family finances. (TR almost had to sell Sagamore Hill before he married Edith because he had lost so much of his inheritance in the Badlands. His older sister helped him get through some lean financial years.)
But, she knew that he would always return to her bed and to no one else's. She often looked down at her sisters-in-law, nieces, and female friends who had married "safely" and did not have a passionate, romantic partnership such as the one she shared with TR. In many ways she was as contradictory in her beliefs as her husband. She was certainly Victorian in her moral strictures, yet one of her closest confidants and friends in the later White House years was the not-so-in-the-closet homosexual chief military aide to her husband (and this gentleman, Archibald Butt, would later help many of the Titanic's passengers to safety before he perished).
One of the most poignant chapters in the book deals with the sons getting ready to go off to fight in the Great War. Quentin, her baby, is eighteen and falling in love with the daughter of one of the anti-Roosevelts, the Whitneys. Edith and TR are concerned with their son falling in love with one of the "plutocrat" Whitneys. However, once they meet Flora they fall in love with her and take her into their family as one of their own. Quentin has to leave the safe environs of Sagamore Hill and the Long Island air training centre and be shipped off to Europe. The elder Roosevelts try to get passports for themselves to travel with Flora so that Flora can marry Quentin in Europe. They can't get passports to travel overseas during the war. Quentin is shot down over France, and TR & Edith have to break the news to her at Sagamore Hill. Flora would remain close to some of the family members until she died many years later.
In short, this is a detailed biography of a great lady, First Lady, wife, world traveler, mother, and grandmother. The vivid detail of the White House during TR's electric eight years at the head of the country is worth the price and time alone. The Kennedys and Camelot had nothing on the intellectual and artisic salon that the Roosevelts inspired and supported during their many years in Washington.

Great Biography

I agree with the other reviews who say there should be a movie about Edith Roosevelt. I didn't know much about her at all but the biography was well written and very informative. Everything about her would make for a great movie. Edith was an intellegent woman and possibly one of the best first ladies we ever had. She seemed very well organized and very efficient whether she was running her family household or the White House staff. I highly recommend reading this biography.

Perfect Kindle mysteries at the perfect price!

This free Kindle download is the prelude to The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle's timeless tales are perfect for Kindle and, actually, the Kindle's electronic voice does an admirable job of reading them to you!

The only downside to this free Kindle download is that it doesn't have linked Table of Contents. So how do you quickly skip to a chapter later in the book?

Great Britian's Nineteenth Century History

English history is served up along with the amazing mystery stories. I enjoy the pictures of daily life...the maid bringing in lunch to Holmes on a pre-arranged schedule, passing the street vendors and beggars, imagining the opium den frequented by addicts, vivid descriptions of period clothing, transportation and commerce slipped seamlessly into the tales. I read this often to refresh the imagery in my mind.

Substandard Kindle Edition

Complaints about the quality of the kindle edition stretch back for years. As of August, 2016, the Kindle edition remains in poor condition. The text still contains typos that appear to be from the digital conversion and not the original text. The Kindle edition lacks many of the standard kindle conveniences. And the Kindle edition contains none of the illustrations.
I got it for free. I certainly wouldn't pay for it. Holmes is available in better condition elsewhere (and still for free).

Furst ( Night Soldiers ) will make his mark with this intelligent, provocative and gripping novel. In 1933, Andre Szara, a highly regarded Polish-born foreign correspondent for Pravda , is asked to perform small espionage tasks by the NKVD. These assignments escalate, until Szara finds himself responsible for obtaining vital production figures from a German-Jewish industrialist who fabricates steel wire essential to airplanes. Inevitably, Szara's integrity as a journalist is also compromised. During this period of Stalinist purges, clearly and chillingly described by Furst, only unpredictability is certain. Szara senses the precariousness of his position, which is compounded by an urgent appeal from a wealthy Jewish Frenchman for Szara to honor his own Jewish heritage by trading his steel wire information to the British in exchange for desperately needed immigration certificates to mandated Palestine. Furst depicts the historical, geographic and political context in lucid and highly readable prose; his observation that Russia annexed Lithuania and Estonia while the world's attention was focused on France's struggle with Germany has an eerie timeliness. As darkness descends over Europe, Szara clings to life while simultaneously attempting to make some meaning of it. His story is not a pretty one; but it is beautifully and compellingly told.

Phenomenal Historical Spy Novel

"Sooner or later, . . . things fall into place and, often as not, you'd rather they hadn't." Andre Szara, a Soviet Jewish journalist originally from the Pale of Settlement, is ordered to retrieve a package from Prague. Hidden within is a secret dossier that initially seems of little worth. As the story unfolds, however, Szara is drawn into rings of spies, factions and counter-factions, Gestapo and anti-Gestapo, Old Bolsheviks and new Stalinists. Szara does not know who is working for whom, who will be killed next, or whether he can trust any of them.

As the story takes place from the end of 1937 through 1940, the backdrop to all of this is an increasingly bellicose and anti-Semitic Nazi Germany, echoed by the Stalinist purges of intellectuals in the NKVD and throughout Soviet society. And no one knows this period -- right down to the details -- better than Alan Furst. From doors that open "the width of an eye" to wireless transmitters humming through the night, from Gestapo boarding trains to pre-war diplomats in formal suits, Furst owns this turf. Thanks to his skill, you can feel throughout the drumbeat of impending war.

Five stars does not begin to do justice to the works of Alan Furst. The history, both the broad events and small details, is impeccable. (In this novel, Furst presents a fascinating, and to my knowledge, original, explanation for the Hitler-Stalin pact.) And he really knows how to write. I found myself rereading sentences because they expressed thoughts or feelings to perfection.

This novel is rich in history, lyrically written with a master's eye. If you like it, you will also enjoy Night Soldiers, Furst's novel of a Bulgarian NKVD agent during the Spanish Civil War.

Dark Star Continues Furst's Espionage Classics

The protagonist of "Dark Star" is a smalltime NKVD operative, born in Poland and working in the newspaper business. As usual, Furst sets his spy novel in occupied Eastern Europe during the opening years of the Second World War. Andre Szara, the reporter, becomes involved more and more heavily in providing reports on a German factory that produces an important component for the production of airplanes. As the Stalinist purges begin and continue, Szara finds his loyalties conflicting between his own survival and his Jewish ancestry. Soon a mysterious French-born Jew working with the British is requesting Szara's reports in exchange for certificates of immigration for Jews trapped in Europe and attempting to escape. As Szara becomes involved, he falls further and further into the labyrinthine world of espionage- a world from which he may never escape. . .

Although this novel can easily be read as a stand-alone book, some readers will enjoy beginning their foray into Furst's world with "Night Soldiers", his original and possibly best spy novel. This book introduces several characters who make appearances throughout Furst's other novels set in the same period of time and general geographical local. Because of this fact, I highly recommend reading "Night Soldiers" first, although those that follow can typically be read in any particular order (the exception being the stories involving Jean Casson - World at Night and Red Gold).

What makes Furst's loosely structured series so compelling is that 1; they are very well researched and historical very accurate, especially with regard to spy craft - as I understand it through academic experience only. 2; the characters are extremely flawed, very believable and interesting to empathize with - all of the characters and their adventures provoke much thought. 3; the novels do not attempt to achieve a false sense of conclusion at their end - they always allow the reader to decide for him/herself what happens, and they rarely resolve the feeling of tension that pervades Furst's works. 4; the secondary characters are always very well developed and much more interesting than their sometimes small roles would have the reader believe- so one is always off balance (who will live, who will die - who can be trusted, who cannot?). 5; Furst does an excellent job of setting the atmosphere of terror that resulted from the conflict between fascism and stalinism during the secret wars preceding the outbreak of the Second World War.

You cannot go wrong with this novel. While not Furst's best spy novel, for anyone interested in reading and enjoying spy stories, or stories of world war two, this book is a must read.

Furst as Tolstoy?

Another Furst masterpiece, but far more complex than the others. In fact, this is the first book in my memory that I finished and started again, for the sheer pleasure of his writing. And also to try to understand better his complex set of characters and settings. It wouldn't matter, I could read any Furst book again, but I've rarely even considered re-reading immediately. He's written an incredible work, somewhat like Anna Karenina, but of course not an epic of that length (but half), although his depth of characters and diverse settings are comparable. And the Russian characters and mood are very Tolstoy, but instead of czarist Russia disorder, he's dealing with Stalinist confusion and pogroms, countered by Hitler's unknown schemes. Such complex times in Europe, while American politicians preferred isolationism, head-in-the-sand mentality (if any). In fact, Furst's phrasings and sentence structures are so astounding that even in the second reading, I'm re-reading pages that are so well done that I'm reading just for the pleasure of seeing paragraphs of incredible beauty. But I do that frequently with Furst works. I could read Furst constantly, but can't be so one-dimensional, although always hurriedly finishing another book so I can return to the next unread Furst. For God's sake, please keep writing for us, your avid readers are always thirsty for more intelligent, well-written-planned-thoughtful stories.
