About the Author
George S. Miller, a University of Iowa graduate, first became interested in the TOEFL examination during his two-year study abroad in The Peoples' Republic of China.  He joined the Princeton Review in 1995 and helped to develop and design the TOEFL CBT course curriculum taught in test prep classes both in the United States and abroad.  He also trained other Princeton review instructors for TOEFL CBT test prep classes and ran his own English as a Second Language school in New York City.  Mr. Miller passed away in 1999.

Don't buy this book if you want to raise your TOEFL score!

This book shows you what the TOEFL is llike, but it will NOT give you any deep preparation. It does not even come close to preparing you for all the material you will see on the TOEFL. The grammar is too easy, the listening section is mostly just a list of idioms, and some of the reading passages are about topics that TOEFL does NOT put on their tests.
You might think this is a good book because it is long, but don't think that! Most of the book consists of practice tests--Princeton Review puts one question on each page (trying to simulate what the computer will look like). For example, the last 150 pages of the book are ONE test.
Finally, the CD-ROM is NOT a Computer Test. You will get only some listening practice.
Good luck on your TOEFL!

Good if You are Good

The basic approach and the manner in which the late author explains the subject is excellent. He talks to you about the pros and cons of TOEFL. Then takes you systematically step by step over each section of the test with exhaustive examples and tests.The two CDs are great too.The audio CD you can use while you are reading the book and the CBT Test CD after you complete it. In my opinion this book will be absolutely terrific for those who have had their basic education in English or are have been using English as their day to day communication for atleast over a year. If you fall under this category just "grab" the book,read it and just go for the Exam.I bet you wont need more than a week to prepare for the exam after you start reading this book.
But if you are looking to LEARN English,Grammar,etc., this book is NOT for you. This book assumes you know English (not too much,not too little and definitely you dont have to know the super tough words and their meanings which you are rarely gonna use in real life)

Same examples over and over again

I thought this book/CD combination is definitely helpful if you are studying for the Toefl. However, two things were driving me absolutely nuts: the constant repetition of "helpful" reminders. The book will remind you, for example, not to waste too much time reading the instructions when taking the test. This sentence is probably repeated 100times.... The second thing are the examples themselves: should you decide to work through the book first, and then do the CD, you will be surprised how many examples are exactly the same in the book and on CD. The CD part is supposed to imitate a "real" Toefl exam. If you know 30% of the questions, however, there is no purpose in doing the CD.

Terrific regardless of grammar!

The folks who are criticizing Junie B. books for improper grammar need to relax! Yes, Junie B. is rude. Yes, she uses improper grammar. Yes, she is a handfull at school! I think it is important to remember what these books really do -- encourage children to read! I would rather my kids read Junie B. than watch any TV, even PBS kid shows. Reading is the MOST IMPORTANT skill that our children can learn. Give your kids some credit... they know what's real and what's entertainment. Kids used to read comic books... oh my! And Dennis the Menace! These books are hilarious for adults and it makes me want to read to my kids all the time. I feel sorry for people who think Junie B. books are the biggest threat to their child.

Pretty Good, but not the best one out there

I have two main SAT test prep books (and some SAT practice test books and a couple books that focus on particular aspects of the SAT) and this is one of them(along with "The New SAT and PSAT by Sparknotes).

This book was good but not spectacular.

PRO'S
- It gives some good strategies for cracking the sections
- Has outstanding techiques for guessing; more advanced and sophiscated techiniques than anywhere else- this alone makes the book worth the price
- Has explainations for practice tests(though others have said the practice tests are not very accurate to the real ones; I can't be the judge of that so read other reviews)

Cons
- Wide Margins - Unless they expect you to write two paragraphs of notes on every page these margins are too big- Maybe their trying to fluff up the thickness of the book
- I found an error in their drills- nothing major but could've been caught by an editor
-Teaching method isn't as good as Sparknotes "The New SAT and PSAT" book

Overall
This has great guessing strategies but is only average in teaching. I recommend buying this book( makes sure its the 2006 edition or later as they may have fixed some mistakes)along with "The New SAT and PSAT" by Justin Kestler and Ben Florman(Sparknotes)

Also get some Sparknotes Powertactics books, Kaplan workbooks and the College Board SAt Study Guide.

This book was OK but not great

Adam Robinson, author of Rocket Review, is on the board of the Princeton Review which published this book. As a result it is not surprising that this book includes information similar to what is found in Robinson's book Rocket Review although in less depth. There are, however, exercises not included in Rocket Review that are potentially useful on pages 315 and 320 all of which focus on different skills needed to generate and organize ideas. The sample essay prompts included follow the SAT I guidelines to the T.

Gr 7 Up-The archetypal sea-faring adventure story is given another rousing and dramatic rendition in this quickly paced abridged entry in Hodder's top-flight Classic Collection series. The critical plot and subplot threads have been beautifully retained, and all the classic lines like "shiver me timbers" have been included. Stalwart English actor Richard Griffiths handles the bulk of the narrative chores flawlessly and is particularly effective in his pacing. He is capably assisted by Gareth Armstrong who, inexplicably, is uncredited on the cassette case. The subtle use of occasional sound effects such as gulls, lapping waves, and cannon and gunshot enhances this superb version of Stevenson's masterpiece. All collections should make room for this fine work.

Beware - this version is heavily abridged.

Please note: Treasure Island
This title is heavily abridged and aimed at children but, the Amazon title doesn't tell you this. From the inside cover of the book:

"This Great classic for Children by Dalmation press has been carefully condensed and adapted from the original version ... We kept the well-known phrases for you. We kept the author's style. And we kept the important imagery and heart of the tale."

With its large font and many illustrations the book comes out to 181 pages; whereas, the Sterling Classic unabridged with its regular sized font and no illustrations comes out to 232 pages. This gives an indication of how condensed this version is.

This one has its place as a kids version and should be clearly marked as such.

Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum!

Treasure Island is perhaps THE classic pirate's tale. Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, created a rich story of adventure and treachery on the high seas all seen through the eyes of a boy named Jim Hawkins. Jim starts off as the son of tavern owners in a humble little port village. When an old seaman stays at the tavern, trouble soon follows him in the form of a pirate crew seeking revenge. I will not give away any more specific plot points, but events move forward to a great treasure hunt, treachery, and a surprisingly engaging story for adults as well as children.

Jim Hawkins is the hero of the story and he's a good lad with a stout heart. Long John Silver is the real star, however, and his character is a fascinating character study in moral ambiguity... or perhaps a study in amoral perfection. The pirate language is good and thick but this edition has plenty of notes to help you decipher some of the references that have become too obscure for today's readers. The plot moves along very briskly with no wasted scenes.

In short, Treasure Island well deserves its status as a beloved classic. It's a story of suspense and adventure that can be enjoyed at a child's level, but has substance for adults as well. I would recommend without reserve it to virtually anyone.

Better for a early reader

I evaluated three series of abridged/paraphrased classics: Great Illustrated Classics, Stepping Stones, and Classic Starts. I specifically read Treasure Island in all three versions, but also evaluated the Jungle Book and other stories in at least two of the versions.

Great Illustrated Classics is in between the others in length and complexity of sentence structures. It's not as easy to read as Stepping Stones but offers a slightly better story by virtue of more adjectives, adverbs and clauses in the sentence structure. The language is still more basic than Classic Starts, and the story suffers some because detail is left out that would embellish it. GIC may be the best series for children readers.

Personally, I bought the books intending to read to my kingergarten age children, rather than have them read. We found the Classic Starts to have by far the best versions of the stories, notwithstanding the originals which are just too long for us, in language that is hard to be understood.

So far, with the children, we finished Call of the Wild, are half-way through the Jungle Book, and started Treasure Island. Previously we've read books like those of Beverly Cleary and the Little House series, besides hundreds of basically picture books (think Virginia Lee Burton, H. A. Rey etc.) The classics have a little bolder story lines, and these abridged series make them more accessible.

Note that the illustrations are poor and don't really add anything. These are just paraphrased classic stories. The illustrations in GIC are the least appealing and not any more frequent than those in Classic Starts. If you want lots of illustrations, try Illustrated Classics (comic book versions). The stories are very poor, but there's lots of illustrations, none of which are fantastic by comparison to a good imagination with an adaquate telling of the story.

I recommend Great Illustrated Classics for the avid chapter book reader. For stories to be read-aloud, I prefer Classic Starts.

What a joke!

The kids who wrote these essays are part of that handful of students who are vying for admission to the same few upper-echelon schools. When a kid is ranked in the top 2% of their class, has an above perfect GPA (weighted of course so they can distance themselves from their merely intelligent classmates), and spends their summers building schools in Africa, they could copy the back of a Wheaties box for their essay and still get in to schools most kids would would consider a stretch.

These do not seem like typical kids. Their stories all sound as though a college admissions coach got hold of them (and their parent's checkbook) during their freshman year and groomed them to enhance their chances of getting into an ivy ("...now this year we'll have Tommy to start a non-profit"). Give me a kid who had to go out and earn their own money, and did it responsibly, any day.

I would want to see good essays from regular good kids, with regular good grades, and regular well-rounded activities whose essays got them into regular good colleges.

Pretty good essays, not your average students featured.

I bought this for my daughter who will be a Junior in high school this year, thinking she could read these essays from average to above average students and get an idea of what colleges were looking for. Each essay features a student, their photo, biography and what they do in high school/extra curriculars, along with their essay, where they applied and where they actually got in. Unfortunately, these students are all above average and very few are "real" students. Most have above a 4.0 and most are super students with above average accomplishments. The essays are good, but the studetns Princeton Review picked, were "hand picked" to make them look good. Keep this in mind and take the bio's with a grain of salt.

Narrated by 95-year-old Lucy Marsden in a distinctive voice brimming with colorful images and sassy, ribald asides, it tells of her marriage at 15 to 50-year-old Civil War veteran "Captain" Marsden, who, permanently traumatized by events he witnessed when he and his best friend enlisted as teenagers, makes a lifetime career of reminiscing about the conflict and collecting weapons to memorialize it. Feisty, irreverent and with a caustic tongue--even in recounting the most tragic incidents, her outspoken opinions crackle with dark humor--Lucy distills the essence of the war, evokes the atmosphere of the small town of Falls, N.C.--interspersing social commentary about the South, its women and the institution of slavery--and draws the portrait of a singular marriage. Garganus has a magic way with words: on page after page, one is tempted to reread the brilliant images that pepper Lucy's monologue. Some scenes have a gripping intensity, especially the section on the burning of the Marsden plantation by Sherman's troops and the accidental immolation of beautiful Lady Marsden. The slide from engrossing to overwritten is almost imperceptible, but when, midway through the novel, Garganus tries to fill in every last detail by way of chapter-long digressions--the childhood of Lucy's mother and the courtship of Lucy's parents, the reminiscences of a wonderfully evoked ex-slave Castalia, etc.--he creates a series of dazzling character vignettes and set pieces that are fascinating in their own right but tend to overload an already long narrative. By the end, Garganus has somewhat overplayed his point that "history" always has a personal impact; in the meantime, he has given us a story that, whatever its defects, is an unforgettable reading experience. Ninety-nine year old Lucille Marsden, confined to a charity nursing home in North Carolina, is an American cousin of Joyce's Anna Livia Plurabelle. Lucy tells the story of her marriage to "Captain" Will Marsden, ostensibly the Civil War's last survivor, whom she married when she was 15 and he was more than triple her age. She also tells about her husband's experiences in the war and after, the burning of her mother-in-law's plantation by Sherman's men, and the abduction from Africa of a former Marsden slave, midwife to Lucy's nine children as well as her best friend. But this novel is less about the War Between the States than about the war between the sexes. And, like Finnegan's Wake , it's also about how history is recorded and about how lives are turned into stories. Lucy's voice casts a spell as enchanting as Scheherazade's; a first novel to be slowly savored and richly enjoyed. BOMC selection.

One of the best books I've ever read . . .

I was with my family at the South Carolina beach when I read this book. I was so moved by the chapter which describes Willie shooting the young Union soldier that I asked my brother-in-law to read that chapter(he's a history teacher and I thought it would be a beautiful passage to include in the teaching of the civil war). When I returned to the beach, he had read it and cried; my sister-in-law had read it and cried . . . Some of your reviewers suggest that the author is no storyteller . . . (whether I go to heaven or hell, my prayer is that those folks won't be there with me). As a daughter of the South and a girl who has been entertained by some of the best storytellers of the South, Gurganus is one of the finest storytellers! If you want a life-altering experience, read this novel. I've never written a review for amazon.com and probably will never write another one . . but, I feel so strongly about the inspiring beauty of this book, that I just wanted to share it . . .

One of the best books I've ever read

I wasn't really prepared for this to be a good book -- I was given an old copy by my Mom, who is from the South. 'Oh good, another war story' I thought. But once into the book, I was hooked. So many books lately seem shallow: they have one main theme and seem constructed mainly to make a good screenplay.
This book will never make a good screenplay, but it makes a rich, intriguing read. Although the story is complex, I had no trouble remembering what was going on or who the characters were: they were so detailed and memorable. It doesn't really matter what you think about the Civil War, either: the book is primarily about people, and about a certain time in history.
On a personal note, as a woman struggling with work and kids and house, Lucy's description of life at the turn of the century made me feel downright liberated, as well as proud of all the women throughout the centuries that have fed and clothed 'a mess of children' through good times and bad. Her description of getting up every morning to make a dozen sandwiches made me think of all the trivial little things Moms do to make life go on for a family, and how it all counts somehow in the end. It was amazing to me that Allan could describe the universe from a woman's point of view with such seeming accuracy and poignancy!

Deleting the passage of time...

Here I am, writing this review of a book I read at least 7 years ago. But, like any great book, I still remember Lucy Marsden.
(Like I remember David Copperfield, Don Quijote, Natty Bumpo, etc.)
Perhaps Gurganus's novel doesn't belong with those other classics, but I remember Lucy!
I agree that the book should be shorter. That doesn't change the fact that you should read this story.
The most powerful impression that this book gives is that the flowing of time separates us from other generations but there are messages and memories preserved for us to experience and from which to learn.
When Lucy compares the confederate veterans hanging out in the town square to the vietnam vets hanging out in that same town square, the effect is dizzying. We came from previous generations and others will come from us, live in our houses, drive down the same streets we do, etc. Lucy serves as a reminder that time passes but things don't necessarily change.
The novel's portrayal of history is indeed special.

Not a good buy

I think this book does not fulfil its promises. In fact, it is way beneath the level of graduates, to whom this book is also targeted at. The advice given is too shallow and general, and does not point out the specifics of good writing. Examples are too few in number and insubstantial in content, and though they may occassionally succeed at being a little funny, are not desirable examples that would enlighten readers on what a "smart" piece of writing would be like. Overall, this is a disappointment, and way below expectations. Princeton Review should be embarassed to have published such a piece.

An excellent book. After reading this book I passed tests with sky-high results. This book assists the learner in most basic and deepest of writing. Completed as a reference book. Do not read it as a novel. With unparalled consturction, this book will improve advance your grades.
