"I have a bad feeling about this," Obi-Wan Kenobi said to his Master, Qui-Gon Jinn.
The two Jedi Knights waited inside the massive battleship that served as the headquarters for the Trade Federation fleet. Their own vessel was docked in the battleship's vast hangar, and they had been escorted to this conference room by a shiny Federation protocol droid.
Obi-Wan had sensed trouble from the moment they arrived.
"Don't center on your anxiety," Qui-Gon instructed his apprentice. "Be mindful of the living Force. These Trade Federation types are cowards. The negotiations will be short."
In another part of the battleship, the protocol droid was reporting to its masters.
"The ambassadors are Jedi Knights, I believe," the droid announced to the Trade Federation viceroy, Nute Gunray, and his lieutenant Rune Haako, the two Neimoidians in command of the Naboo blockade.
The viceroy glanced at his lieutenant in fear and alarm. Jedi Knights were powerful and wise, and could easily ruin their carefully planned blockade.
Unsure of their next move, the two Neimoidians decided to contact their master, a Sith Lord named Darth Sidious. Within moments, a menacing hologram appeared before them.
"This turn of events is unfortunate," said the flickering image of the evil Sith. "We must accelerate our plans. Begin landing your troops."
"And...the Jedi?" Nute asked.
"The Chancellor should never have brought them into this," Darth Sidious said icily. "Kill them immediately."
In the battleship hangar, the Trade Federation cannons aimed at the Jedi's starship.
In the conference room, the two Jedi Knights heard a giant explosion, then a low hissing sound.
"Gas!" Qui-Gon cried, jumping to his feet.
Holding their breath, the Jedi drew their lightsabers. A moment later, the conference room door opened, and deadly green fog billowed around them as they stepped into the hallway. Battle droids, firing blasters, blocked their way. The Jedi were under attack!
With lightsabers flashing, the Jedi held their own against the battle droids. But dead ahead, ten large destroyer droids rolled forward -- then transformed into battle position.
"Master!" Obi-Wan warned Qui-Gon. "Destroyers!"
Swiftly, the Jedi escaped the deadly droid attack. But when they finally reached the main hangar, they found that their ship had been destroyed. They were trapped!
From a hidden perch, the Jedi watched the activity in the hangar. Thousands of battle droids were being loaded onto a giant landing craft.
"It's an invasion army," Obi-Wan whispered.
Qui-Gon knew they would have to find a way off this battleship. "We've got to warn the Queen of Naboo that her planet is about to be attacked. And we must contact Chancellor Valorum."
"You were right about one thing, Master," Obi-Wan said. "The negotiations were short."

Lucas Script Entertains, Visual Drawings Help

Even though I haven't finished reading the script (I don't want EVERYTHING spoiled!) I am excited to own this. Lucas is back! He IS a good writer, contrary to his protestations. The script is VERY tight and moves fast. The dialogue is direct, to the point. Lucas's themes are well-drawn. There is a lot of foreshadowing in this screenplay. We've got a lot in store for us in Episodes 2 & 3.
As far as the "book" goes, it is well laid-out. The storyboards used to illustrate the script are well-placed. It's instructional to see early versions of costumes and characters. It's also interesting that Lucas describes Liam Neeson's character as "sixty years old" -- obviously it was before Liam was cast!
P.S. This is best read with the Episode 1 CD playing in the background.

Too Early for Oscar predictions? I think we have a winner...

I thought I was immune to the hype until I read this book. I did go to Zeller's (the Canadian version of Wal-Mart) on Sunday May 2 just before midnight, to pick up a couple of action figures, Darth Maul and Mace Windu, just for a novelty. But that was the end of my merchandise purchasing for a while at least I thought. I wake up the next morning and go to a book super store and see that the staff is fiddling with their Episode One display. I look at some colouring books, the novelizations, all very nice... then I spot an open box on the floor. Curiousity gets the best of me and I look in the box: before me is the object that has eluded Internet surfers for the last few years-- The Screenplay. I snap it up without hesitation.
I only stopped reading the thing to watch the premiere of the London Symphony Orchestra's music video on Muchmusic. Most screenwriting handbooks will tell you that a screenplay is only a blueprint, and most of them will stress that most screenplays, even of good movies, are a bore to read.
Not so this screenplay: Even without the illustrations, it is a vivid read. I was overwhelmed with elation with every bit of dialogue uttered by the characters. I don't know if this screenplay has the final dialogue from the film (which was apparently re-tooled by pro script doctor Carrie Fisher) but the voices rang true for me.
And the scene descriptions are amazing as well. Most screenplays leave a lot of set and blocking description to the imagination and discretion of the director, but since Lucas had to tightly shoot the scenes to accomodate his special effects, the scene descriptions read like a good novel.
Reading this before seeing the movie has not ruined the story for me: in fact, I want more than ever to see the film so that I can take what must be (according to the screenplay) sumptuous visuals and to hear what will be classic dialogue uttered by great actors.
I can see George Lucas getting nominated for an Oscar for this. It's that good.

Politics, intrigue, and the boy who would be Vader.....

I have been fascinated with screenplays and the art of writing them since I read my first copy of Carol Titleman's The Art of Star Wars, a trade paperback which, along with production paintings, costume designs, photos of models, composites, and storyboards, contained the uncut fourth draft of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. (This, by the by, was the first time I saw the new moniker for the film everyone still calls "Star Wars.") In that book, I not only read lines of dialogue and relived some of my favorite movie moments (this was before I owned my first VCR), but I also saw scenes that had been left out of the final film, either left unshot or deleted after filming (such as Han's encounter with Jabba the Hutt.)
Shortly before the premiere of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, I was stunned when I saw The Illustrated Screenplay and Terry Brooks' novelization at my usual bookstore. Lucas had clamped down on the release of the Return of the Jedi novelization 16 years before (to prevent certain plot revelations from getting out too soon), and I had expected him to do the same with The Phantom Menace. Being the dedicated Star Wars fan that I am, I bought both and read them as the soundtrack album played in the background.
The Illustrated Screenplay's version of The Phantom Menace differs somewhat from the finished movie. It is essentially the same, of course, following the Naboo Crisis from the arrival of Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi aboard the Trade Federation flagship to the parade at Theed. However, in an attempt to cut the film's running time to just over two hours, several heavily political scenes set in the Galactic Senate were nixed, which in a way helped the film. Sadly, a few lines which I really liked, including one involving Obi-Wan and a shorted out lightsaber, didn't make it to the finished film. (Other scenes, which were filmed but later deleted, can be read in their entirety and in context; it's up to the reader to decide whether or not deletion was necessary.)
To me, reading the screenplay ahead of the May 19, 1999 premiere enhanced rather than detracted from the enjoyment of the picture. In fact, even while I was watching the much maligned Episode I (I think I am one of only the few non-Lucasfilm-connected persons on Earth who really likes The Phantom Menace) I not only understood what Palpatine was up to, but I could also see parallels between Anakin Skywalker's experiences and his son Luke's in Episode IV (which is set 32 years later).
The storyboards presented in this book are only a fraction of the thousands used during the pre-production stages, yet they give the reader a hint of the film's visual rhythm and energy. They are almost as good as the ones by legendary visual artist Joe Johnston, who worked on the more popular "classic" Star Wars trilogy more than 20 years ago.
For anyone interested in the finer points of screenplay writing and/or the strengths and weaknesses of the prequel saga, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace: The Illustrated Screenplay is a good reference.
