Two Years Before the Mast: A Personal Narrative of Life at Sea (Modern Library Classics), by Richard Henry Dana Jr., Gary Kinder

Tracing an awe-inspiring oceanic route from Boston, around Cape Horn, to the California coast, Two Years Before the Mast is both a riveting story of adventure and the most eloquent, insightful account we have of life at sea in the early nineteenth century. Richard Henry Dana is only nineteen when he abandons the patrician world of Boston and Harvard for an arduous voyage among real sailors, amid genuine danger. The result is an astonishing read, replete with vivid descriptions of storms, whales, and the ship's mad captain, terrible hardship and magical beauty, and fascinating historical detail, including an intriguing portrait of California before the gold rush. As D. H. Lawrence proclaimed, "Dana's small book is a very great book."

Wish I had been there too !
By David Boles
This is a great story for nautical buffs, history buffs and adventure fans. This young man takes passage to sail around the horn to go to California in it's days of infancy as a traders destination.
I found the personal stories , the information of the early days at the ports of call and the historical description to be exciting and deep in it's descriptive painting of a life long gone but important to the future of the state.
I recommend this book.

engrossing read
By harborsparrow
In the 1830's, the author (then a sickly Harvard student) shipped as a common sailor on a commercial clipper ship which left Boston to sail to California and back. Although an educated young man, he lived among the uneducated sailors as one of their own, almost completely separate from the officers on board. It is an engrossing read with detailed descriptions of all aspects of life about those old unpowered sailing ships--a difficult life indeed. The cruelty of the captains towards their men was particularly striking, as was the fact that pretty much everyone, once on board and under sail, was completely at the mercy of the captain, who was basically dictator of that small kingdom.

I could hardly put it down. It's amazing to realize that people survived such hardships, and it's also a revealing and endearing story about men living in close quarters with men, either on a ship or in times or war, where no women were normally to be found at all. So interesting on several levels. Well written, and a great read. Highly recommended. (P S - I'm biting my nails to prevent revealing any spoilers about this true-life story).

Fascinating look at the life of a common sailor in the 1800's
By Tom H Texas
Two Years Before The Mast is written as a journal that skips over the mundane boring days, to give you a fantastic view into life on a merchant ship plying the West Coast in the 1800s. Written by a common sailor about life on the ship, Two Years was a refreshing change from most books and movies, like Master & Commander, that are written from or about the ship's officers. The duties and daily pattern of life for a common sailor is the base of the book, but the personal relationships between crew members, officers, and landlubbers really bring it to life.
You'll see lots of sailing terms, so it will help to have a resource to translate these terms, but you don't actually need that to enjoy the book. Most of the text is clear and easy to read, though there are times when you'll also run into unfamiliar figures of speech.
Overall, it was a well-written book that I had a hard time putting down.
