This is by far the best calc book

Last year I skipped the pre-calc test and studied for the BC test essentially using only this book and got a 5. I admit, it's not going to teach you calculus like a class will, but it will make you do well on the test. And that's the thing, calculus is taught so poorly in high school (and college) that it comes across as boring and tedious. The Princeton Review tells you what you need to know and the fastest way of doing it. In that sense it's infinitely better than most classes, and is well worth the cost of owning a copy.

GREAT BOOK!!!

If you click my name, I gave a review to a similar AP Calculus review book. Both books are good, but this one is by far superior. The other book is great if you are just looking for some tests, but this books comes with the full package. If you need solutions this is the book. It also teaches you everything you need to know about Calculus AB. Since I am not taking BC, I am not sure of that material. I would recommend this book to anyone taking the AP exam.

Good resource and reference tool...

This book is a wonderful reference tool in explaining entry-level jobs. I believe it meets all expectations and it fulfills the title's promise. However, there needs to be more done in the job search. This book doesn't say anything about resumes, cover letters, or networking. All of which is vital to the job hunt. A wonderful addition to this book would be the popular job-hunting book, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality: solutions for a rewarding and meaningful career" by Jason McClure. I think these two resources together makes for a wonderful career/job-hunting library.

A good overview of what to study

This Princeton Review book does a great job of giving a general overview of what to learn for NCLEX. It assumes a basic knowledge, and just highlights things that NCLEX loves to test. Very few detailed explanations are given, and the majority of the teaching is done through fill-in-the-blanks, crosswords, matching etc. While I did use other, more ocmprehensive books to really study for this test, I appreciated having the Princeton Review book around to help me focus my studying. The authors, apparently, have studied the NCLEX and know what they like to test. This was great. If you're looking for a good overview, I think this is your book.

I really liked the way the book was divided - very easy to find what you're looking for (Adult Physiological Integrity, Pediatric, Psych etc.), and found that the questions at the ends of the chapters were very close to the NCLEX questions I actually received. I did not utilize the CD very much, since it required that you took full 160 question tests before getting any feedback.

I passed NCLEX with 75 questions.

Historian D. Graham Burnett writes about his experience as the foreman of the jury in a murder trial in New York City, what he calls "the most intense sixty-six hours of my life." There was nothing especially spectacular about the case; it was not a famous one, and while A Trial by Jury holds interest, it's not a John Grisham potboiler. Yet Burnett uses the experience to illuminate the heavy responsibilities of jury duty and all the maddening frustrations associated with determining something as deceptively simple as reasonable doubt.

"The jury room is a remarkable--and largely inaccessible--space in our society, a space where ideas, memories, virtues, and prejudices clash with the messy stuff of the big, bad world," Burnett writes in this elegant chronicle. His primary characters--his fellow jury members--come alive on these pages: "a clutch of strangers yelled, cursed, rolled on the floor, vomited, whispered, embraced, sobbed, and invoked both God and necromancy." He grows to like some, and "loathe" others. ("Are there some citizens not clearly able to distinguish daytime television from daily life?" he asks at one point.) Parts of the book are funny, as when he describes the small steps he took to encourage the trial lawyers to strike him out of the jury pool: "I promised to give any healthy prosecutor hives. I brought along a copy of The New York Review of Books just in case." Alas, Burnett found himself in the courtroom, and eventually he became foreman. This allows him to wrestle through the contradictory evidence presented by both sides--and forces him to conclude that even the truth can resemble a muddle when presented in court. He has trouble making up his own mind about the case--this is no Twelve Angry Men update, though its insights on jury-room dynamics are just as instructive. Burnett also ruminates on his own profession: "I realize now that for me--a humanist, an academic, a poetaster--the primary aim of sustained thinking and talking had always been, in a way, more thinking and talking. Cycles of reading, interpreting, and discussing were always exactly that: cycles. One never 'solved' a poem, one read it, and then read it again--each reading emerging from earlier efforts and preparing the mind for future readings." Jury duty, of course, demands an awesome finality--and the conclusion to the trial involving Burnett is one that haunts the author after the gavel falls. --John Miller

Drawing on an academic and intellectual background, he builds an impressive melodrama and tense, emotionally exhausting scenes in the jury room that surely will recall Twelve Angry Men. But while the ruminations are articulate and engrossing, readers may wonder how Burnett plays a key role in the story while managing to remain distant enough to render the facts of the jury room as easily as he does. Burnett (history, Princeton) chronicles his own path from ordinary citizen and prospective juror, to seated juror, to jury foreman, to peacemaker, and, finally, to resolution artist as he uses his own unique blend of knowledge and reason to lead 11 other disparate souls to a unanimous verdict. The book offers rare, insightful views inside a jury room, as people from all walks of life try to work together and reach a consensus. The case at hand involves a complex blend of seduction and murder, with the defendant claiming he killed the victim in self-defense after being pressured for sex. What emerges from the author's leadership of the deliberations is his attempt to build a consensus through a unique blend of patience, knowledge, and wisdom intrinsic to the rigor and discipline of classical and academic thought processes. Burnett reminds us how imperfect the adversarial system of law really is, and the narrative format allows for a rapid and enjoyable overview of the topic. Recommended for academic and public libraries.

The idea is great; the author, case and jury are less so

The idea for this book was certainly a good one. Given how the whole jury system plays such a central role in our judicial system, it is rather surprising that there is so little material on what actually goes in inside the jury room. As Burnett rightly points out, it is a "largely inaccessible space in our society." Thus the book is certainly a step towards filling that void. That said, I found it somewhat unsatisfying for several reasons, some of them within the author's control and some of them not.
In various other reviews here, the author has been described variously as "pretentious" (on several occasions), "pompous", "snobbish", "holier-than thou", "smug", and "self-congratulatory". Anyone see a theme here? I don't really disagree with any of these and I would add pedantic, condescending and superior. It really comes through on almost every page. And yet, I have to say that with the possible exception of Adelle, no one else in that jury room seemed like a candidate for MENSA. In fact, a number of them, such as Felipe and Rachel, seemed like true idiots.
The overall lack of intelligence of so many jury members had several unfortunate consequences. First, with just a few exceptions, including some comments by Adelle and Dean, it made the deliberations (which take up half of the book) much less interesting than they otherwise might have been. Second, whatever sense of pedantry and superiority which is probably naturally latent in the author anyway were probably brought to the fore when he saw who he was dealing with.
Also, again though no fault of the author's, I simply didn't find the case he had to work with all that riveting. A man was lured to or went voluntarily to the apartment of some sort of man/woman/transvestite/cross-dresser/drag queen and either did or did not kill the latter in self-defense when the latter made sexual advances.

All in all, it was not a bad book by any means, but I don't think that it was the book it could have been either.

A Refreshing Insight

Many of us can think the thoughts, but few of us can put into words the experience of sitting on a jury and interacting with our fellow man in order to attain a "just" verdict. D. Graham Burnett has taken this mandatory life experience and shed a new light on it and now shares it with the world. Having been associated with the legal process, as a court reporter, for 30 years, and having, for the most part, taken it for granted, it was very refreshing for me to see, through his eyes, its shortcomings and its strengths. He asks tough questions. What is the law? What is a just verdict? How powerful is the state? Do we need protection from it? And, he demonstrates just how the jury process can and does work, even with all of the personalities, the loss of patience, the bickering of strong-willed people, and how even the quiet and withdrawn have something to say: eventually. Well worth your time.

Could have been better

It is easy to pick on people that are less educated than you, and, if you are very well educated like this author, to do it in a way that seems less than mean spirited, however real people are difficult to understand and this is what the book unfortunately missed. The author approaches his subject "critically" rather than with curiosity. Because of his intelligance, his education, his experiance, etc., he obviously feels that he "knows" what he is talking about. And, about many things, some of which are in this flawed book, this is true. But, he could have learned many things and this is the problem with the book. While as a trial lawyer I found the book useful, I would hesitate to say that I also found it to be good.

Christopher Buckley is not so much a novelist as a free-ranging satirist looking for targets. In Thank You for Smoking it was big tobacco and earnest reformers; in God Is My Broker it was business and religion; and in No Way to Treat a First Lady, it's the entire legal profession, not to mention the Washington establishment. The novel opens with the President of the United States returning to the conjugal bed after an illicit Lincoln Bedroom romp with the Streisandesque Babette Van Anka. His wife, the long-suffering Beth McMann, promptly clocks him with a Paul Revere spittoon. Several hours later he dies. "Lady Bethmac," as the First Lady is immediately dubbed by the media, is put on trial, and the resulting media circus gives Buckley lots of opportunity for nicely observed skewerings of legal culture. "Judge Dutch creaked forward in his chair. This is the source of the aura of judges: they have bigger chairs than anyone else. That and the fact that they can sentence people to sit in electrified ones. It's all about chairs." He gets in some neat neologisms--a lawyer performs a "credibilobotomy" on a witness--and sends up the pretensions of law TV: at a roundtable discussion, the guest from Harvard Law is invited "to provide gravitas and to shift uneasily in his seat when the other guests said something provocative." Buckley's Trial of the Millennium is so far-fetched that it seems entirely possible. --Claire Dederer

The lurid sexual excesses that dominated presidential politics in the late '90s provide plenty of comic fodder for Buckley's latest satire, which doubles as a legal thriller that begins when President Ken MacMann is found dead in bed next to his wife after a vigorous night in a White House guest room with his latest mistress, film star Babette Van Anka. First lady Elizabeth MacMann whose tabloid nickname is Lady Bethmac is first on the suspect list, largely because she bopped Ken with an antique spittoon after his latest infidelity, leaving a bruise that spelled out Paul Revere's name on the late presidential forehead. Beth quickly hires an expensive, successful legal gun named Boyce "Shameless" Baylor, who also happens to be an old flame, and Baylor wades into the sordid mess, using the well-established tactics of tabloid trials to steer his client toward reasonable doubt. But Beth gets cocky after his initial success and insists on taking the stand to clear her reputation, a tactic that backfires so badly that Baylor is forced to resort to jury tampering to try to force a mistrial. Buckley has to use some obvious narrative cliches to get Baylor and MacMann out of the mess after they rekindle their romance, but the good news is that this book is more plot driven than Buckley's earlier satires, making it more coherent and effective over the long haul. The political humor is first-rate as usual, as Buckley has plenty of fun with the slimy, silly mess that is Beltway politics. This is one of his better efforts, which should keep Buckley on the "A" list of American satirists.

The first lady of Buckley's latest satire (after Little Green Men and Thank You for Smoking) is Elizabeth "Lady Beth Mac" MacMann, wife of President Kenneth Kemble MacMann. Kenneth, whose morals are as unreliable as a granny knot, meets an untimely death two and half years into his first term. Indicted for his murder, Elizabeth hires as her defender the one and only Boyce "Shameless" Baylor, to whom she had once been affianced. Elizabeth doesn't wear the widow's weeds long before she and her hotshot legal adviser get together for some unprotected fun in bed, with unintended but not unusual results. In strict story terms, the novel is a long tease-how many witnesses and how much testimony do we have to hear before finding out what really happened that fateful night in September? But it's worth the wait. The book is shot through with a particularly mordant vein of social satire and mocks the ludicrousness of modern life, something to which we've become numb. This should be on your list, near the top.

Laughter, Viagra, and Presidential Sex

A great Buckley novel that really has some interesting twists and turns. I can't say much without giving away the story - lets just say that I've learned some new tricks.

Funny. At times - so funny you will double over with laughter. The sort of surprising humor that pops up out of nowhere and just doesn't go away.

Warning - if you laugh continuously for more than six hours, seek immediate medical attention.

Flotus kills Potus, or did she?

Really funny Washington satire by Christopher Buckley (whose father I wish were still alive to roll his eyes at instead of spinning in his grave over the current GOP) about a Flotus charged in the "assassination" of the overly randy, womanizing cheater of a Potus. The characterizations of the various Washington personae, legal vultures, and media mongrels are spot on. Very enjoyable summer read.

Flawed but helpful.

This book is full of questions and done in the style of the NCLEX, with all the catagories mixed. Questions were a decent representative of what was on the actual test. However, I found about 1-2 errors in every 100 questions or so. Some had questionable wording, some were typos, and some were flat out incorrect answers. That was the most frustrating part and made it harder to trust the book. But I'd still recommend it as a question book with rationals for right and wrong answers.

Excellent way to prepare for the NCLEX-RN!

I found this book to be an extremely efficient aid to study for the NCLEX exam. The book is written to simulate actual questions on the exam and is set up in a format that enables the reader to test their knowlege in order to focus studying only the areas that you are weak in. The book contains 17 tests of 120 questions each that are selected in the same content manner as the NCLEX exam. I reccomend this book highly in preparing to take the exam.

Back pedal

I used this book after I completed a week long NCLEX review session to test myself and evaluate if the review was helpful. I scored just as poorly on the practice tests before as after the review course. The questions are outdated and the strategies given to me by the review intructor were not beneficial in taking these particular test questions. I thought some the questions were flawed and the answers sometimes just plain incorrect, as well as typos, which makes one wonder if the correct answers were typos. Also, the rationales are vague and do not fully explain why incorrect answers are incorrect. Very frustrating.

Beginning with a request to preteens to "please only read every third word," Willie Nelson proceeds to reveal his thoughtful, hilarious, raunchy inner world in his memoir The Facts of Life: And Other Dirty Jokes. As the title promises, the book is full of jokes, often preceded by no more introduction than, "Rinky wanted me to tell you this joke...." And, yes, some of them are fairly dirty. Other topics Nelson ruminates on include the stock market, the relative amounts of money Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan make from endorsements, the origins of the term "Outlaw Music," the virtues of dairy products and his favorite Biblical lines (e.g., "`Physician, heal thyself'"). "Shotgun Willie sits around in his underwear," one of country songster Nelson's ditties begins, and the line evokes the feel of this loose little book to a T. Nelson wrote the prose in it while his bus carted him and his band and crew from coast to coast on a performance tour. Said prose consists of minuscule memoirs; cracker-barrel philosophizing; a bit of stem-winding for small farmers (Nelson is a stalwart of the Farm Aid concerts); and lots of jokes, usually dirty, as promised, and also stunningly politically incorrect, which means they are often pretty funny. But if the book consisted solely of Nelson's journaling, it would be, oh, 200 pages shorter, maybe more. Photos depicting Nelson's long passage from Texas toddler to the long-haired, pot-puffing, jogging old Nashville outlaw he is today and lots of lyrics from his 50-year stash of songs fill out the volume. For anyone who loves Nelson's act, there's nothing not to love about this hayseed-speckled gossamer of a book. Ray Olson

The Essential Willie!

Even my daughter the confirmed punk rocker howled with delight when she read it. It's just Willie having fun, telling war stories, Texas tales, and some of the dirtiest jokes you'll ever read. For long-time Willie fans, it's filled with lyrics to classic Willie songs, and, even better, to his obscure, mostly long-forgotten songs. One of the lyrics has a legend not in the book attached to it: Willie and Johnny Bush are on a tour bus, Willie says something like "I can write a hit song about anything in 15 minutes." Bush says "You're on!", they bet something best left unmentioned, and hands him a newspaper story he'd been reading about a woman found strangled. "I Just Can't Let You Say Goodbye" is in the book ... maybe the bloodiest country song ever ...."... the flesh around your throat is pale, indented by my fingernails, now you can't scream and you can't cry, and I just can't let you say goodbye ..." When you see the lyrics to "Crazy" in print, you realize all over again what a wonderful wordsmith Mr. Hugh W. Nelson is. It's a book I have read and re-read, gave a dozen copies of it as gifts when it first appeared, some of them to musicians who'd played and toured with Willie. "Yup, he hasn't changed a bit!"

As Unique & Original as Willie....

If you bought "Willie", buy this for dessert! If you haven't bought "Willie"...go do it~Now!....It's better'n any fictional account of anything you're gonna be finding-guaranteed! I also bought his Rainbow album and his interactive CD "Willie..life & times of.." Willie fans 'need' these rarities and won't be disappointed ~ unless they miss getting them for their collection...I used to spend my New Year's Eve's at his "New Year's Eve Parties" in Houston and sure miss those days, too. He is one multi-faceted, talented and unique All-American Treasure who just keeps getting better with age. If you heard the Art Bell Show, when he interviewed Willie..and that's all you know about this entertainer, let me tell you that Art fumbled the ball on that one and should've read one of these beforehand...so don't you miss out - buy the book(s)!

"If you ain't crazy,there's something wrong with you."

If you pick up this book and thumb through it quickly,you may pass it up.If so, you'll make a big mistake.

I've read Willie with Bud Shrake and Willie-Behind the Music,by Clint Richmond;both excellent books;butthis is a great update and different book by and about Willie.This book is a real fun read,especially if you've been a fan of Willie for a long time like I have.;for nearly 40 years.

Reading this book is like sitting around with Willie chewing the fat. He talks directly to the reader as if you were his friend;and who wouldn't want to be one? On second thought, it is a lot easier to read and listen to Willie than trying to travel with him.Most couldn't last a week,and I must admit,me included.

The style of this book would be a good pattern for others to follow.He breaks it up with experiences and jokes.After all,really Willie just enjoys life and wishes the same for everyone else;except maybe for the IRS.The abundant photos are excellent and appreciated.

I particularly enjoyed Willie's comments about Ray Price,another legend,when he said:

"Ray Price is the greatest country singer ever,period." That's an real tribute coming from someone of the stature of Willie.It says a lot for Ray,and even more for Willie.

This book also contains a lot of Texas common sense,such as:

"There must be a better way to start the day than getting up."

"Hell,what's wrong with being lazy sometimes?"

"It's almost April 15,don't forget o file your toenails by midnight"

"Remember the early bird gets the worm,but the second mouse gets the cheese."

"No good deed goes undone."

Great compasses to guide you.

Willie has shown he can be a great writer.If you've ever doubted how talented Willie really is,try to think of a writer who can write songs and play them like Willie does.
